The crash occurred when the pilot (Lt. Cmdr John Stacy Bates) exceeded the performance specs of the F-14 he was flying. An engine failed when he attempted a high-speed high-angle maneuver after the flyby, causing the explosion that destroyed the aircraft. Both the pilot and the RIO were able to eject with only minor burns to their upper body. He crashed a second F-14 later and was killed.. Show off.
@390bullitt1968 Sorry to tell you but you can't exceed the performance specs of a modern fighter jet at just over mach one and survive when the plane doesn't. You will die before the plane does.
@RandomHuman1000 dude shut up you need to show respect. They're up there protecting our skies. My brothers in the air force and I plan to join too. We're up here and your down there motherfucker.

I'm not sure which is worse. A punch from Mike Tyson or being ejected out of a fighter jet after breaking sound barrier. I prefer Mike because at least I'll be on ground
both of the pilots survived. the investigators said that oil entered the afterburners and the plane caught fire and disintregate. the pilots had burns on hands and face but they we're fine. Discovery.
@BrrrAlex It looks more like the F-14 tried to pull a too-tight turn. At 0:18 the F-14 banks right but the quality is too low to see what happens. Do you have a source for yours?
@VollyTyrannis yes discovery channel. destroyed in seconds show. after the show i was on my computer writting the comment cause this vid was on my mind for a long time too.
@skyranger11 They ejected, that's the last audio piece "two parachutes, two parachutes!" The pilot, LT Commander Bates later crashed another F-14B into a suburban neighborhood and killed 5 people including himself.
@MisterSeaCow Same here although alot of that stems from me watching top gun as an 8 year old boy lol. Still, theyre a great looking fighter. I think Iran still uses the ones it has ironicly enough.
Such a shame to ee a bad ass fighter like the F-14 go down like that, My guess is that it was an F-14A with the old pratt and whitney engines on it and it had a very catistophic compressor failure. Still glad to hear that the aircrew survived though. Hopefully they were not grounded by their injuries for long.
This accident is very curious so i made a research if those Flyboys survived
20 September—Just after making a supersonic pass close by the starboard side of the USS John Paul Jones, F-14A-110-GR Tomcat, BuNo 161146, 'NH 112', of VF-213 from the USS Abraham Lincoln, explodes in flight from catastrophic compressor failure, both crew ejecting, suffering burns to the upper body. Crew recovered.
@everythingkid1 fuck you? Im asking because the F14 is designed to break the sound barrier, so for it to explode when it attempts to break it seems to be a design flaw and I wanna no what happened? im not dumb man fuck you im interested in the cause of the explosion and why it happened?.....
@LP640Murcielago The piece quotes by Gamea650 said compressor failure. The compressor in a jet engine is basically the fan at the front. It sucks the air in and compresses it, which makes it hot so that the fuel ignites on contact. It spins at very high speed, so if that fails, pieces go flying and tear up the engine and aircraft.
@LP640Murcielago I gather that particular model of engine was prone to problems. The extremely high rotation speed, and the shock/vibration of breaking the barrier must have weakened it.
god..why re they yelling 2 parachutes over and over again..the commander very well will know that there are 2 parachutes there and will start the needed routine..even without your stupid yelling..
In a period of merely a year and 4 months, we (The Blacklions) lost 4 planes, and two of them were because his erratic flying. However, I restate that he was a good man, and I miss him to this day. Along with the other fatality out of those 4, Lt Hultgreen.
Revlon, Patrick, Buzzard; you are lost, but never forgotten. Rest in Peace
What happened here was a compressor failure that exceeded the capabilities of the engine housing, which in turn broke up and forced shrapnel into the REHC liner, igniting the fuel that of course lead to a catastrophic explosion. Regardless of what anyone has told you otherwise, both the pilot (LCDR John Stacy Bates) and the RIO (LT Jeffery Alberson) ejected and were recovered safely. However, LCDR Bates was killed months later in January of '96 when he crashed.
@XosrovTheGreat I guess cuz after the burning parts of the plane are fallen you still can see one big dot in the sky but the pilot may have been injured by the fireball of the explosion. Not sure tho, I'm just commenting what I see. :)
@crazypat523 You're wrong. This was my squadron (VF-213) and I was present when this happened. The pilot that was flying was known within the squadron for pushing the plane far past what it could do. He had crashed once before this, and crashed again after this. It was only in the crash AFTER this one, at an Airshow here in the States, that he was killed. He was a good man though, so I'd suggest you kindly shut the fuck up if you have absolutely no idea what the hell you're talking about.
@costalot0 There was someone in the plane. The pilot and navigator. Both survived, but having injuries from the flames and glass in the face I believe.
@KrackaCapaSlapa And because you only like fast and explosions, is why you probably weren't able to write a correctly structured sentence with correct grammer.
Wasn't a structural weakness, just a failure because of loading beyond design limits. The F-14A was prone to compressor stall at high angle of attack in dense air (i.e. sea level). He stalled the compressor and produced a ton of asymmetric thrust. The same pilot, his rio and 3 on the ground were killed doing almost the same thing a few months later. Stalled the compressor, plane literally switched directions and went into a house.
they fixed this with subsequent models of the mighty 'Cat didnt they? I remember reading the B variant swapped out engines to the GE F110-400 and then the Super Tomcat had even version of the GEs

@pogpog28 Breaking the sound barrier will not cause the plane to explode. Correct. The pilot was faster than Mach 1 well before passing the ship, but when he overstressed the airplane after the pass, the wings separated. There's fuel in them thar wings... and engine intakes right under them. Ignition! Explosion! It's already been said, it's not the sound barrier, it's the sharp turn after. UFO's? Really? Next I'll hear how UFOs brought down the WTC and caused the East Coast earthquake!
@jmp13090 Just watch repeatedly 0:20 and find the 2 lightning fast streaks of light. Notice the direction of the flames by the time it was hit. Notice also the streak of light before it exploded.
@xClawzK0x Nope, he was banking to the right but all of the sudden the biggest & some small debris direction is on the opposite. If it explodes due to stress, the debris should have followed where the plane was actually flying.
@rockfilmers From another thread one of the turbine rotor became unbalanced after sound barrier...at those RPMs an unbalanced turbine rotor throws metal blades everywhere...
@rockfilmers ever heard a concorde break the sound barrier at 30,000 ft? its ultra loud so at that height it would deafen anyone, that is the air around the plane condencing, nothing to do with it breaking up.
@MrXTHJB Wow, I grew up on many military bases. I know what a sonic boom sounds like. Now I live some what close to Kennedy Space Center and I've heard the shuttle many times. And notice You don't hear the plane until after it passes? It's flying faster than sound
@rockfilmers so as you know what a sonic boom sounds like, you would realise it would be loud, and there is no noise its just air condensing around the plane.
@MrXTHJB The noise is the air moving out of the way of the aircraft. The shock wave forms when air can't move out of the way fast enough. That's why it is referred to as a barrier. Kind of like when you move your hand through water really fast, the water forms waves behind your hand
@rockfilmers realise that there is no noise from the plane apart from the engines, its the air condencing a sonic boom is so fucking loud and there is more than 1 "sonic boom" in the video so get it right instead of using wikipedia.
@MrXTHJB The hell? I'm not using wikipedia. It's simple. I know that. Is that what you're getting at? And there are two booms I know, but with a smaller plane like this its so rapid you can't tell them apart. The shuttle comes in and they are just a split second apart. The shuttle is much bigger. Of course the jets are whats making the noise, you're squeezing air, injecting it with fuel, and then release it all at once. I've seen a super sonic pass. And I'm not deaf.
Anybody knows how old is this footage? I do remember watching this from the History Channel long time ago.

if it broke the sound barrier at that height, you would be death...
MrXTHJB 5 months ago
@MrXTHJB ummmm... Why?
rockfilmers 5 months ago
@rockfilmers From another thread one of the turbine rotor became unbalanced after sound barrier...at those RPMs an unbalanced turbine rotor throws metal blades everywhere...
erh7771 5 months ago
@rockfilmers ever heard a concorde break the sound barrier at 30,000 ft? its ultra loud so at that height it would deafen anyone, that is the air around the plane condencing, nothing to do with it breaking up.
MrXTHJB 5 months ago
@MrXTHJB Wow, I grew up on many military bases. I know what a sonic boom sounds like. Now I live some what close to Kennedy Space Center and I've heard the shuttle many times. And notice You don't hear the plane until after it passes? It's flying faster than sound
rockfilmers 5 months ago
@rockfilmers so as you know what a sonic boom sounds like, you would realise it would be loud, and there is no noise its just air condensing around the plane.
MrXTHJB 5 months ago
@MrXTHJB The noise is the air moving out of the way of the aircraft. The shock wave forms when air can't move out of the way fast enough. That's why it is referred to as a barrier. Kind of like when you move your hand through water really fast, the water forms waves behind your hand
rockfilmers 5 months ago
@rockfilmers realise that there is no noise from the plane apart from the engines, its the air condencing a sonic boom is so fucking loud and there is more than 1 "sonic boom" in the video so get it right instead of using wikipedia.
MrXTHJB 5 months ago
@MrXTHJB The hell? I'm not using wikipedia. It's simple. I know that. Is that what you're getting at? And there are two booms I know, but with a smaller plane like this its so rapid you can't tell them apart. The shuttle comes in and they are just a split second apart. The shuttle is much bigger. Of course the jets are whats making the noise, you're squeezing air, injecting it with fuel, and then release it all at once. I've seen a super sonic pass. And I'm not deaf.
rockfilmers 5 months ago
@rockfilmers technically there are more than 2, but you're right

@MrXTHJB Don't you mean deaf?

stupid russian spy birds. theyre very smart. you notice how it posititions itself in the jets path to destroy an engine. unfortunately, it succeeds.
