  • Does this wonderfully historic building have a caretaker? It appears to be so vulnerable in it's present state.

  • @mnorth1964 I believe it is locked at nights, there is a house right next to it who seem to keep an eye on it and also an honesty box for parking!

  • @graemefield01 Thanks. Good to know. One day I will make the trip to look inside. Majestic building. Thank you for sharing footage from your visit there.

Deerhurst is one of the most architecturally rich 7C Saxon churches in Britain.

King Edmund & King Canute held counsel there in the very church that still stands today(mentioned in the Anglo Saxon Chronicles).

The font is stuff of dreams as are the unique styled Saxon windows.

To put it in context Deerhurst St Mary's is as important historically as Cantubury is to the Christian Church.

You need to read up before you visit because there is so much to see

Ive visited Deerhurst many times and the atmosphere inside indicates it's been there over 1300yrs, it's strange but the inside of St Mary's church feels ancient when other churches ive visited of similar antiquity such as Escomb in Co Durham do not.

Do some research first because Deerhurst is so rich in history that one can visit several times and still not take in everything.

Magnificent is an understatement Deerhurst is without doubt Britains greatest Saxon church

Rest assured Deerhurst St Mary's the main Saxon church and the tiny Oddas Chapel are of such national importance that if they needed urgent repair money would be readily available.

Just imagine King Edmund Ironside and King Canute actually stood in the very same church that is standing today.

The Saxon font once a horse trough is the adjacent farmyard is the finest one in existence possibly dating from either the 9C or 8C.

A visit to Deerhurst is a must
