RPG's have come so far from the pen and paper days (which this is, just on a computer), and though these games give you a lot of freedom, as far as gameplay goes, they pale in comparison to RPG's of the 90's and 2000's. Chrono Cross, FF7, Tales of Eternia, Tales Of Destiny, Legend Of Mana, etc. ALL better than this, Hack, Rogue etc.

@ChrisHunter12345 No. These games had endless replaybility, amazing architectural design, and far more depth than any RPG of today. Modern RPG's blow hard, they think substituting gameplay for fancy graphics and music will make it a better game. It's why Fallout 1 and 2 are better than BoS and 3.

Fallout and Final Fantasy aren't the only RPG's out today, and most of the underground, less known RPG's are just as replayable or in depth as old school, pen & paper RPG's. You can't just look at the mainstream of something and say it sucks. That's like looking at Soulja Boi and Gucci Maine and saying rap sucks based on them alone.

To answer your question yes, that was boring to look at and yes the LETS PLAY NETHACH!!!!!!!!! scream was anoying. I still find this game as interesting as minesweeper (wich isn't that bad). Just a few points; really, you should never hold down a key, like when you were searching. a lot can happen that you might miss. Secondly, when I come across a staircase leading down, I like to go down, and immediately back up. It can be very helpful to know where the staircase leading up is if you happen to fall through a hole. Thirdly, with monsters such as grid bugs and goblins, I'm pretty sure they only give you +1 EXP, whereas they give your pet +1 HP, so I normally let my pet kill them.

Your voice is about five-seven times a lot less annoying than many other LPer's, such as one with an incredibly nasally voice or one with a Southern accent. The Evangelion intro and LET'S! PLAY! NETHACK! helps your case marginally likewise.

The first rogue-like I saw was dwarf fortress. I was like "OMG, what the fuck, jesus, fuck!". I didn't like the graphics at the beggining, but I played it. That was about... 2 years ago! And now those symbols seem so familiar for me! I tried vulture's eye, but I couldn't play it, it's like it "took out my imagination".

People should give a try to roguelikes and not judging it before playing.

I know the dungeon levels are somewhat randomly generated. Is it possible for the computer to **** up and make a level you can't pass, no matter how many times you kick a door?

For 100% free, this oldschool game is pretty fun, I love turn-base dungeon/tower crawls. I got the QT version for my Mac and its great, even has an option for ascii dungeon graphics, to bad there isn't a way to make the stats and messages ascii as well.

Having never played Modern Warfare 2 I can't comment on its quality, but for NetHack, honestly, the story matters little. You're in a dungeon, you want to get an amulet, that's all you need. It's like Contra; who cares about the backstory as long as you're able to blast aliens with a gun? A game like NetHack doesn't need a story outside of "here's why you're in the dungeon, good luck!"

I think the story of NetHack is perfect, simple, but perfect. You have been heralded since birth as the instrument of your god to recover a powerful amulet, the reward: inmortality...amazing!

On the other hand, I really think a good storyline is very very important for games such as modern warfare, if you are going in a lot of missions, you must be fighting for something, and that something must be interesting and worth fighting for, a good storyline can make the idfference between a game

@lseths With games like Nethack, your gameplay experience IS the story. So many things are possible in the game, it sounds amazing just telling people what happened to you.

Of course, this is the opposite of cinematic games, where the story is fed to you. Even then, one could argue that at least you're being told a story with SUBSTANCE, e.g. Heavy Rain.

Instead of just holding down s to search, it's probably better to type some number then press s (10s or 20s is usually plenty to find a secret door or tunnel). Doing so will repeat whatever action you do after the number (it works for resting as well). That way something doesnt run up and kill you while you are searching. Also, it's pronounced lie-ken.

I like playing the Tourist (I seem to get further with them than other classes, oddly).

That is odd. Tourists are generally considered to be one of the hardest classes in the early game.

Still, everyone has their own best class. My suggestion is to keep going. Eventually you WILL win. And don't be afraid to try out other classes sometimes also; your best class may not be the one you think it is. I originally thought Barbarian was my best class, until my first ascension turned out to be a Knight.

Kick the chest/box to open it without forcing with a weapon. The only bad thing about this way is that the box could break, as in everything in it is unusable.
