It's called an arrangement when you interpret a song using different music than was written originally: Clapton's I Shot the Sheriff, Chili Peppers Higher Ground, for example...a cover is what a fucking radio DJ calls it...did Clapton cover Layla when he did the acoustic version? NOoooo...he rearranged it!!! As he says in the beginning of the song:" let's see if you can spot this one..."

SRV's version was waaaaaay too long. There's a lot to be said for just the right length of song/solo. Jimi's version is much much better ....even his live versions ( Berkley as example) kick this one's ass.

There's nothing wrong with a three minute hook. Example - My first 45 - You Really Got Me - Kinks. Beats the shit out of protracted guitar noodling a la -In a Gadda Da Vida.

Albert King is the best example I know. Minimal playing. short songs, but KILLER tone and feeling. That's why SRV toured with him in 85. (Saw em). He understood that and wanted to learn.
