Living in a very rural area in Maine we experience power outages very frequently. Alot of people have built in generators hooked up to their homes that kick on automatically when the sensors detect no main power. So a simple solution of either cheap UPS systems or a full house UPS system means uninterrupted power. Plus the whole thing runs off propane so its easier to keep going than gasoline.

I dig power outages but we never have them here, I think it's been out for a total of 10 minutes in the last 5 years. Regardless, I have two UPS devices for my computer and home entertainment center to condition the power and provide a backup. Beyond that, I would probably would keep my phone / laptop on reserve in case I need them but honestly - who needs to be in front of technology 24/7? I would look it as an excuse to walk outside or crawl up with a flashlight and a good book.

The longest I've ever been without power was only for 2 days or so. It happened after a huge thunderstorm with winds that knocked down a good amount of power lines. In terms of when/where this happened, it was just this last summer at our cabin in northern Wisconsin. Luckily, I had my iPhone on me (with only an Edge connection, sadly) so I was able to go to the power company's (WI Public Service) website and report the outage. Public Service was hunting like crazy for the down lines.

I thought this video could have advice for times like hurricanes (yep! cyclone season is about to start here). I'd recommend candle-lamps or oil lamps for night-time (and a lighter!), books for daytime, and storing water and food that can be eaten without cooking in your basement. And a solution for toilet substitute. As for the laptop, just forget it ! We're geeks but we have to save the power for recharging our phone (USB powaa!) so, no DivX ! Take playing cards or board games!

In my area there has never been a power outage more than 12hrs. Last time probs the longest one in a while was caused by an over grown tree short circuits and transformer box. That cause one scary loud arcking explosion. After such electrical event remember to swicthoff and disconect all your valuable tech. When the power comes back on some times there is a surge rush. That day i just went to cook dinner (gas stove).
