because this patient was under thoracic epidural anaesthesia (TEA) and not a general anaesthetic he was awake the whole time just heavily sedated and the area of the body the surgery was performed was completely numbed by the epidural so although awake the whole time he could not feel a thing and his eyes opened as they wore the sedation off. hope that answers your question
