Watch the video named "Maria Callas - Testimonials and Interviews - Part 1" posted by "TeachingOpera" (myself) and you'll see the Elvira De Hidalgo interview, talking about her pupil, Maria Callas.
si quelqu'un s'avisait de chanter comme ça aujourd'hui.... en prétendant être chanteuse lyrique...je me demande ce qu'on lui jetterait, à la place de fleurs!
Aha so THIS is good old Elvira! (great voice.) I love these old recordings. They all sound like they´re sitting in small tin cans. (haha charming. Everything is so PERFECT nowadays!)
Though it's a spoof, there's a YouTube video that shows De Hidalgo late in life...MUCH heavier and smoking...commenting on Callas:-- MARIA CALLAS - TOUT - johnny torres version
It would be interesting to know the story of this scene - the "ole" chorus, the admonitory coughs. There is about this performance a sense of paradox, a prim gaiety and quaint fun that would surely have appealed to W.S. Gilbert. One wonders whether any beverage was available, perhaps reinforced by the covert addition of strong waters? It seemed almost an anticlimax that the performance didn't end with loud hiccups and a clatter of back hair combs as the ladies continued to let their hair down.
BIG SMILE HERE. The assembled group seemed to be having a darned good time. The intro comes across as "not strictly scripted." It's the kind of on-disc performance you'll never hear today. The early Calve Victors come to mind--where she comments on the proceedings during the actual recording process. Fun stuff!
The scene takes place at a fandango party, in a café. The choir cries out ¡olé! and asks the soprano to sing. She coquettishly clears her throat and obliges, with this celebrated Canción Española (Spanish song), about the accidented love between a bull-fighter and a manola [Madrid street belle]. When he ditches her, she shrugs it off, because she knows herself to be better-looking than her rival (¡mas guapa!) and breaks into a song in praise of Spain, land of love and sunshine.

By all means, check a new posting of Elvira De Hidalgo singing Barba Yannis Kanata. It's a real charmer with good sound.

For acoustic recording the voice sounds very fresh and vibrant.
