@nagged55 Ok I'll explain, but first let me make things clear - I am NO Mac fanboy.
I worked as a Linux Systems Engineer for 2 years(I've now switched to the InfoSec field), I deploy high-end enterprise firewalls like CheckPoint, which firmware's based on FreeBSD(the same OS as MacOS X).
@nagged55 There's no No.1 or 2 actually. Truth is, PC(Windows) simply has a larger user-base(means more people use it). That's all. This is the reason why there are more software(debatable) & games(definitely PC rules in this area) available for Windows. If you think about it, all a computer(I use an umbrella-term here "computer" to denote all) is really used for is simple: word processing, spreadsheets, email, internet surfing, gaming.
@nagged55 Although each OS has its own set of software that can achieve all that, in reality, you spend more time fixing problems on Windows then you do on a Mac. In Windows, settings for applications are stored in the registry. When you uninstall a program, leftover registry entries(for that app) are left hanging inside your system registry. Overtime, this causes the registry to grow bigger & messier and eventually lead to performance issues, eg. slow boot, slow app execution...etc.
@nagged55 Just to clear things up abit, the real comparison is between MacOS X & Windows, not Between Mac & PC. So why Macs seem to be "more expensive" is because you are actually paying more for DAMN GOOD software. When I say "damn good" software, by that I mean the Operating System. One that isn't prone to viruses/malware/exploits.
One that: 1) Doesn't simply hang and lock up for nothing so much so I have to hard reset the power. 2) Won't freeze up on you(over nothing) while you're multitasking and lose the Word document you've been typing up the past hour.
3) You can simply DON'T bother to install any form of antivirus or malware protection and still NOT get infected by anything. 4) You can feel SECURE knowing that the exploits available(zero-day exploits included) for it are few(rare) if not extremely difficult to exploit.
@nagged55 If Microsoft decides to drop its crappy MS-DOS as its base. And decide to go with a base like Linux or Unix(BSD), I'm all supportive of it. Only reason why I hate Windows(sadly I still game on it) is because it isn't *nix based. And this means the very foundation its built on is extremely unreliable and shaky.
@nagged55 Lets not lie/deceive ourselves, we know damn well how many times our Windows Operating System has frozen or applications hanged, and how many times we have to reboot for new updates/patches to install. And how much time we wasted banging our heads wondering what the cryptic error messages we see in event viewer means.
@nagged55 Prior to Windows7's official launch, many of us in the IT industry heard rumours that Microsoft would be changing the entire base of Windows. Supposedly, a Unix kernel would replace the horrible inadequate NT kernel(ntoskrnl.exe) and the MS-DOS shell would be replaced by the Unix Bash or CSH shell.
@nagged55 We were thrilled. Unfortunately our happiness was shortlived when we found out none of that would happen. We would still be stuck with the mediocre, crash-loving software Microsoft created almost 15 years ago. No progress. Stagnant. :(
@nagged55 On the other hand, Apple could have created MacOS X to come pre-bundled with all sorts of drivers for all kinds of hardware and release a version of MacOS X that runs on standard PC hardware(Hackintosh already proves this is possible). But by doing so, it means the bulk of Apple's time would be spent on supporting 3rd party hardware and NOT developing its platform & product to the fullest. Apple has set the bar really high.
If you guys want to make a difference about how computers SHOULD BE, DO pressure Microsoft to make a switch from their crappy MS-DOS operating system that serves as a base for ALL flavors of Windows to a REAL operating system like Unix! Reason why Windows is so crappy is simply because much of the underlying architecture is still pretty much DOS-integrated. Talk to any IT Professional who has done work related to Unix & you'll understand why Unix-based operating systems ARE superior.
Putting games aside to be fair(as there're more games on Windows then Mac simply because Windows has a larger user-base), TRUTH IS - Windows makes you REALLY FRUSTRATED(even if you are a Windows guru and can troubleshoot problems and registry issues). Whereas a Mac simply zips by smoothly with few problems. Macs are goddamn stable.
Other then stability & speed of the base operating system, everything else is debatable. Truth is Mac isn't as PERFECT as many people are trained to believe. I too have gotten hung applications on Mac. Difference is on a Mac I can just ForceQuit or fire up my terminal and use a killall -9 to stop the hung process. It dies off immediate. As compared to Windows, clt-alt-del, end process(repeat multiple times). Sometimes Windows hangs and locks up completely requiring a full reboot.
Guys, guys...Seriously I am a full Apple person. iMac, MacBook Pro, iPhone, iPad. I can tell you for sure Mac isn't PERFECT. As far as viruses and malware go, its practically non-existant for Mac. Compiling and installing a generic rootkit/backdoor that works on every Mac is close to impossible, unlike Windows where the same rootkit canexecute & run on anything from WinNT to Enterprise Server 2008.
I have a win7 it = hell! I want a Mac because 1. Virus safe!
2. Frigging better layout!
3. A bit smaller than most pc's
Conclusion: i want a mac laptop but a Win7 desktop computer, becuz i use my laptop for lifestuff like : Mail, music, etc etc. But i use my desktop for gaming! (currently a homebuilt computer thats better than most normal desktops.
@meandkg No, PC's are not that great and Mac's are very solid machines. I also find it interesting for someone who watched a Pro-Mac commercial(s) is bagging them out. Very interesting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@meandkg I won't choose for you, but here's my personal account:
PC (6 machines, XP, Vista, 7): Max lifespan - 6 months, speed - 4.5/10
Mac (2 machines, Leopard, Snow Leopard): Max lifespan - 7 years, speed 9.5/10
Linux (multiple): Max lifespan - 3 days (when it wiped the hard drive and I gave up)
All information there is 100% genuine. Maybe I've been unlucky with PC, but with mac there's no luck involved. My iMac has lasted 7 years without a single OS/related error. You decide.
The processors are the same, Dell has 1 more GB of memory, and the video card on the Dell is a nVidia GeForce GT 220, 1024MB whereas the video card on the Mac Pro was NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB.
All the specs were the same.
Studio XPS by Dell $1,089
Mac Pro $2,499.00
I really don't think customer service and product quality is worth more than twice the price...
Fine - mac is really starting to catch up with PC - but the fact that it has taken this long for macs to start performing the basic things like 3D games is enough to deter most up-until-now PC users.
it's really easy to buy a computer for you anywhere... go to best buy ask the guy standing around the computers or the geek squad for a hand, not only will they get you the best computer for you, they will probably tell you some neat stuff you did not know about that you should know before buying a computer.
@LeGoMaNiAMaN That's invalid. Your comparing an operating system and a computer. You could say OS X ran faster on a pc but that doesn't make any sense. You should of said Actually Mac can run vista faster than a shitty 10 year old computer that came with windows.
Mac Seller:Of course cause this is an upgraded Mac Mini
Me:I also can use windows?
Mac Seller:Of course! just run Bootcamp, is really easy!
Well... not... really before the release of Snow Leopard install Windows 7 was really hard (Boot Camp now supports 7) and if i want to install linux i need to use refit and well... i have my dual boot with Gentoo and it works great but i had problems with refit. But you know... macs are great computers with a great OS so go ahead if you want one.
i wanna laptop that can run Crysis and other games, within a reasonable budget*
(sorry, i had to correct you there)
a friend of mine brought a mac, paid through the nose for a sub standard machine that was about as powerful as my old single core rig, all he can do on it is play world of warcraft (barely) and edit video.
like a few people here, i was fooled into believing macs were better, i think i had that laptop for 6 months before i couldnt stand being disconnected constantly.
How is buying a computer hard? My MOM (who doesn't know jackshit about them) went in the store, talked with the salesperson for a little, and she ordered a custom one. I use it ever since, and it is perfect, and it didn't cost much. The same with my previous one. Or my laptop. I went in, and looked at the stats of those in my price range, even if I don't know to much about them, and the laptop is fine, and normal. You need just 10 minutes and a LITTLE common sense.
Actually Macs also have virus and other kind of malware. The difference is that on a mac if the security of the system has been compromised, you will never notice... Thats worse. Otherwise, defense and industrial critical systemas would be using macs instead of MS, Linux and others.
@tadeogutierrez Malware yes viruses no... Of course it's not as simple as that. The relative rarity of Macs certainly helps, but the fact is that the user would have to be totally complicit in installing and running any such malware, including unpackaging it from a zipped archive and giving it the admin password to the system if it was to even start. That's why there's zero viruses, not "less viruses than Windows".
@tadeogutierrez why, because windows pcs selling are wider, if you haven't noticed, industry and military computers are built and sold by the same ones who put ads papers into your mailbox, it's market not quality.
so where's the riddle?
frankly, what have you been offering ppl to vote on that comment?
@ikt123 Windows has been using NTFS since Windows 2000, Macs can read and write FAT32 like windows but it can't write NTFS, Macs use HFS Plus, derived from the file system used in the original Macintosh.
Windows 7 doesn't even allow for formatting devices to FAT32, because NTFS is superior in every way.
So to answer you question, Windows users don't use FAT32, Mac users do.
@JonBj2 "Windows 7 doesn't even allow for formatting devices to FAT32"
Hit the Windows/Start Button -> type cmd.exe in the search box -> press Ctrl+Shift+Enter to get an Administrator Command Line. If prompted, press Yes or enter administrative credentials in the UAC pop-up box.
At the command line prompt, enter
format drive_letter: /FS:FAT32
oh and btw, just because an operating system can read a certain file system, doesn't make it inherently insecure. -_-
@ikt123 When sent the first comment I had never heard of HFS Plus, I'm studying computer application but in class it was only said that Macs could read and write FAT32(other OS's were mentioned as well), I guess I just assumed that it only used FAT32.
I was talking about the partition manager in Windows 7 and when selecting a drive format in "Computer".
And I said that is makes it more insecure, it can't write NTFS meaning it has fewer encrypt-able file systems at its disposal.
@JonBj2 "it can't write NTFS meaning it has fewer encrypt-able file systems at its disposal."
Does Windows support EncFS now? eCryptfs? Saying Windows has more filesystem support than other OS' is completely laughable given how shit windows is at it. Load up Ubuntu and you'll get NTFS, FAT32, EXT4, EXT3, Btrfs, XFS, FUSE encryption filesystems and tons of others OUT OF THE BOX, windows can't do the same, not even close.
@JonBj2 "Mac users do." <- why is it that you say "Macs use HFS Plus" and then say "Windows users don't use FAT32, Mac users do." Do you not notice what you type?
I hate it that all these people out there are on such a juvenile rant of what's better? Windows or Mac? Who CARES?! Before one actually makes a decision, one should take a good look at all the OSs out there! And by "a good look", I don't just mean going into a shop and using it for 5min. I mean, going to someone you know, who has a computer with such operating system, and giving it a good use of at least an hour! Take a look at all the features and make use of its GUI.
ok this fucking vid is ass.... windows or pc r know 2 be the easiest fucking computer 2 date.... mac is more fucking complicated... ever heard of a mouse fucking have 2 press control and click bullshit... firewall n programs r hard 2 install tooo
well mrblur get a mac because they may cost alot. but they have no viruses they only freeze if you harm it and you have alot of programs on it pc loads slow it takes FOREVER TO LOAD PLZ BUT A MAC
Macs are only for stupid people who don´t know how to press the start button while PC:s are for advanced users who may want to upgrade their hardware, overclock etc.
Sorry to bust your bubble dearest but Macs are built for the more advanced, technical, video editors or artist looking for high quality and up-graded computers. PCs were introduced into the world at the start, therefore, they were made simple, otherwise people wouldn't understand how to use them. Macs came in afterwards, bigger and more advanced.
Hah, more technical and advanced? Are you kidding me? A media player for Mac has a start, stop, next song etc. a Windows media player has various of other options. I can find atleast 5-6 ways to open my computer, on a Mac there's like one option. If it was so much more technical and advanced, I think game developers would have chosen Mac as the proper platform.
@NinkComPoop thats the exact opposite, sure, Macs are more popular for artists and video editors, but they are the simpler ones, they were more "refined" and they cover up all the system stuff, PCs are more open and advanced.... and thats the reason pros use them for video editing, because they just get that part done...
@NinkComPoop Macs or more advanced? and they give higher quality for video editors or artists? you realize you could go out buy the parts and make ur own PC, for half the price of the new "more advanced" Macs and have it run about 5 times faster with better graphics. I own both a Mac and PC, My family brought a Mac because they were supposedly "More advanced" and better for graphics. BIGGEST waste of money ever. If you really want a good PC make it youself.
Lol wut? This sucks. PCs are highly personalised, and if you got to most Tech stores they'd be more than willing to help you choose a computer if you tell them what you want.
hey theres a reason whay its called Personal Computer the computer is made for customizing. mac isnt uncustomizeable but pc has it easyer. mac is more for home office and small bussiness pc has a wider spectrum because its again customizable
only to a point, im talking adding in new cases taking the thing a part, puting it back together that sort of stuff if a mack can do that than they are one in the same because the can run each others os
lol, there's a lot more to customizing than adding ram (for an exuberant fee) and hard drive space. There are some high end PC companies that will actually put whatever painting you want on the case (actual pictures) , as well as letting you chose whatever hardware you want (nvidia or ati)(intel or amd)(how much wattage you want)(MSI/AABIT/ASUS/ECS) the list goes on and on
Linux is good but the only good distro is slackware and you have to recompile all of the packages to get them to work on slackware. Personally I think that you need to dual boot linux and windows and keep mac out of your life
I bought a mac. Now what?

This is the reason why there are more software(debatable) & games(definitely PC rules in this area) available for Windows. If you think about it, all a computer(I use an umbrella-term here "computer" to denote all) is really used for is simple: word processing, spreadsheets, email, internet surfing, gaming.
joeheng 1 year ago
@nagged55 Although each OS has its own set of software that can achieve all that, in reality, you spend more time fixing problems on Windows then you do on a Mac. In Windows, settings for applications are stored in the registry. When you uninstall a program, leftover registry entries(for that app) are left hanging inside your system registry. Overtime, this causes the registry to grow bigger & messier and eventually lead to performance issues, eg. slow boot, slow app execution...etc.
joeheng 1 year ago
@nagged55 Just to clear things up abit, the real comparison is between MacOS X & Windows, not Between Mac & PC. So why Macs seem to be "more expensive" is because you are actually paying more for DAMN GOOD software. When I say "damn good" software, by that I mean the Operating System. One that isn't prone to viruses/malware/exploits.
joeheng 1 year ago
One that: 1) Doesn't simply hang and lock up for nothing so much so I have to hard reset the power. 2) Won't freeze up on you(over nothing) while you're multitasking and lose the Word document you've been typing up the past hour.
joeheng 1 year ago
3) You can simply DON'T bother to install any form of antivirus or malware protection and still NOT get infected by anything. 4) You can feel SECURE knowing that the exploits available(zero-day exploits included) for it are few(rare) if not extremely difficult to exploit.
joeheng 1 year ago
@nagged55 If Microsoft decides to drop its crappy MS-DOS as its base. And decide to go with a base like Linux or Unix(BSD), I'm all supportive of it. Only reason why I hate Windows(sadly I still game on it) is because it isn't *nix based. And this means the very foundation its built on is extremely unreliable and shaky.
joeheng 1 year ago
@nagged55 Lets not lie/deceive ourselves, we know damn well how many times our Windows Operating System has frozen or applications hanged, and how many times we have to reboot for new updates/patches to install. And how much time we wasted banging our heads wondering what the cryptic error messages we see in event viewer means.
joeheng 1 year ago
@nagged55 Prior to Windows7's official launch, many of us in the IT industry heard rumours that Microsoft would be changing the entire base of Windows. Supposedly, a Unix kernel would replace the horrible inadequate NT kernel(ntoskrnl.exe) and the MS-DOS shell would be replaced by the Unix Bash or CSH shell.
joeheng 1 year ago
@nagged55 We were thrilled. Unfortunately our happiness was shortlived when we found out none of that would happen. We would still be stuck with the mediocre, crash-loving software Microsoft created almost 15 years ago. No progress. Stagnant. :(
joeheng 1 year ago
@nagged55 On the other hand, Apple could have created MacOS X to come pre-bundled with all sorts of drivers for all kinds of hardware and release a version of MacOS X that runs on standard PC hardware(Hackintosh already proves this is possible). But by doing so, it means the bulk of Apple's time would be spent on supporting 3rd party hardware and NOT developing its platform & product to the fullest. Apple has set the bar really high.
joeheng 1 year ago
If you guys want to make a difference about how computers SHOULD BE, DO pressure Microsoft to make a switch from their crappy MS-DOS operating system that serves as a base for ALL flavors of Windows to a REAL operating system like Unix! Reason why Windows is so crappy is simply because much of the underlying architecture is still pretty much DOS-integrated. Talk to any IT Professional who has done work related to Unix & you'll understand why Unix-based operating systems ARE superior.

@joeheng uh... what?

Not you, I'm referring to the rest of them arguing about whether a Mac or PC is better.
joeheng 1 year ago
Putting games aside to be fair(as there're more games on Windows then Mac simply because Windows has a larger user-base), TRUTH IS - Windows makes you REALLY FRUSTRATED(even if you are a Windows guru and can troubleshoot problems and registry issues). Whereas a Mac simply zips by smoothly with few problems. Macs are goddamn stable.
joeheng 1 year ago
Other then stability & speed of the base operating system, everything else is debatable. Truth is Mac isn't as PERFECT as many people are trained to believe. I too have gotten hung applications on Mac. Difference is on a Mac I can just ForceQuit or fire up my terminal and use a killall -9 to stop the hung process. It dies off immediate. As compared to Windows, clt-alt-del, end process(repeat multiple times). Sometimes Windows hangs and locks up completely requiring a full reboot.
joeheng 1 year ago
Guys, guys...Seriously I am a full Apple person. iMac, MacBook Pro, iPhone, iPad. I can tell you for sure Mac isn't PERFECT. As far as viruses and malware go, its practically non-existant for Mac. Compiling and installing a generic rootkit/backdoor that works on every Mac is close to impossible, unlike Windows where the same rootkit canexecute & run on anything from WinNT to Enterprise Server 2008.

You decide.

A Dell XPS vs. a Mac Pro

@tadeogutierrez And PC viruses and nearly as deadly as Mac ones.
wassup986 1 year ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@tadeogutierrez Malware yes viruses no... Of course it's not as simple as that. The relative rarity of Macs certainly helps, but the fact is that the user would have to be totally complicit in installing and running any such malware, including unpackaging it from a zipped archive and giving it the admin password to the system if it was to even start. That's why there's zero viruses, not "less viruses than Windows".
liealvin2 1 year ago
@tadeogutierrez I have a lot of computers in my house, and the only one that has never had a virus is my iMac. Macs WIN.
pacguy19 1 year ago
@tadeogutierrez why, because windows pcs selling are wider, if you haven't noticed, industry and military computers are built and sold by the same ones who put ads papers into your mailbox, it's market not quality.
so where's the riddle?

paulomuniruequed 1 year ago
@tadeogutierrez Also, Macs can't write NTFS, only FAT32 meaning it's more vulnerable to data theft.
JonBj2 11 months ago
@JonBj2 what the fuck is this shit.
ikt123 11 months ago
@ikt123 FAT32 means File Allocation Table and NTFS means New Type File System.
They're computer file systems (methods used to write data on Hard drives, thumb drives, etc.).
FAT32 doesn't allow for much data encryption, NTFS does.
This makes FAT32 file systems vulnerable to data theft.
JonBj2 11 months ago
@JonBj2 who the fuck is writing to a FAT32 filesystem besides dumb windows users?
ikt123 11 months ago
@ikt123 Windows has been using NTFS since Windows 2000, Macs can read and write FAT32 like windows but it can't write NTFS, Macs use HFS Plus, derived from the file system used in the original Macintosh.
Windows 7 doesn't even allow for formatting devices to FAT32, because NTFS is superior in every way.
So to answer you question, Windows users don't use FAT32, Mac users do.
JonBj2 11 months ago
@JonBj2 "Windows 7 doesn't even allow for formatting devices to FAT32"
Hit the Windows/Start Button -> type cmd.exe in the search box -> press Ctrl+Shift+Enter to get an Administrator Command Line. If prompted, press Yes or enter administrative credentials in the UAC pop-up box.
At the command line prompt, enter
format drive_letter: /FS:FAT32
oh and btw, just because an operating system can read a certain file system, doesn't make it inherently insecure. -_-
ikt123 11 months ago
@ikt123 When sent the first comment I had never heard of HFS Plus, I'm studying computer application but in class it was only said that Macs could read and write FAT32(other OS's were mentioned as well), I guess I just assumed that it only used FAT32.
I was talking about the partition manager in Windows 7 and when selecting a drive format in "Computer".
And I said that is makes it more insecure, it can't write NTFS meaning it has fewer encrypt-able file systems at its disposal.
JonBj2 11 months ago
@JonBj2 "it can't write NTFS meaning it has fewer encrypt-able file systems at its disposal."
Does Windows support EncFS now? eCryptfs? Saying Windows has more filesystem support than other OS' is completely laughable given how shit windows is at it. Load up Ubuntu and you'll get NTFS, FAT32, EXT4, EXT3, Btrfs, XFS, FUSE encryption filesystems and tons of others OUT OF THE BOX, windows can't do the same, not even close.
ikt123 11 months ago
@ikt123 I never said windows had more file system support than onther OS's, I said that Mac OS X had fewer file systems, which is true.
I personally only use Windows for gaming, I use Linux Mint for everything else, Mint is a modified version of Ubuntu.
JonBj2 11 months ago
@JonBj2 "Mac users do." <- why is it that you say "Macs use HFS Plus" and then say "Windows users don't use FAT32, Mac users do." Do you not notice what you type?
ikt123 11 months ago
I hate it that all these people out there are on such a juvenile rant of what's better? Windows or Mac? Who CARES?! Before one actually makes a decision, one should take a good look at all the OSs out there! And by "a good look", I don't just mean going into a shop and using it for 5min. I mean, going to someone you know, who has a computer with such operating system, and giving it a good use of at least an hour! Take a look at all the features and make use of its GUI.

@NinkComPoop yes that may be true..But look at the move studios and animation studios majority of them are PCs. very few Macs run 3-d programs
Cognetto 1 year ago
@NinkComPoop thats the exact opposite, sure, Macs are more popular for artists and video editors, but they are the simpler ones, they were more "refined" and they cover up all the system stuff, PCs are more open and advanced.... and thats the reason pros use them for video editing, because they just get that part done...
TreyRust 1 year ago
@NinkComPoop Macs or more advanced? and they give higher quality for video editors or artists? you realize you could go out buy the parts and make ur own PC, for half the price of the new "more advanced" Macs and have it run about 5 times faster with better graphics.
