CRAP!!! I should have watched this vid earlier cuz I just got a spyderco tenacious and the opening felt alil hard so I put some petroleum jelly and just alil bit and it felt fine after that. Is my knife gonna be ok? And what other oils can I use I have motor oil and I haven't put any on it yet but it seems ok cuz a motors made out of metal and the knife is metal so I guess it could work. Please respond as fast as you can any help is appreciated thanks.
I know this vietnam vet, he says that the penetrate in wd-40 is not what you want on your metal, unless its actually rusted of course. He uses 3 in 1 on his hundreds of rifles. To summerize, he made it out like penetrating something over and over would wear it out, haha... but he seems pretty on the ball though, for real. So now I don't eff around with any penetrantes...
Thank you for posting. Your enthusiasm and passion for this topic comes through on all your videos!
Excellent point on the safety element of keeping your knife sharp. Just like if you swing a golf club too hard you're going to hit poorly, the same is true with a knife (or any tool). The tool you paid all that money for should be doing the job, you're just controlling it. If you are having to push too hard to cut you're increasing the risk of a botched cut or injury.
@223JMH "*After use, wash the blade, dry it, and use Flitz, WD-40, vegetable oil, or Vaseline on the blade to prevent rust." from Ray Rantanen Custom Knives.
ill keep using WD40 type of stuff when i dont have gun cleaners.
ive been using WD-40 for pretty much years now for lube and coating for storage purposes. i dont like it cause dirt and lint/dust sticks to my knives, and i always have to clean all the oil off if i have to use i for food. so soon, maybe tomorrow im going to get some mineral oil for coating and im going to order some Quick Release Oil online for the lube.
i always hear people said, Oil your new balisong when it arrives, But I am not sure what part of it to lube, how much should i use and if vegetal oil would be fine.
hey i just bought a spring assisted knife and when i got it it worked fine smooth later today i was putting a bit more of a edge on it put some wd40 on after wards blew it of with a compreser and but now it makes a clicking nose it dint before espesaly on closeing but with opening aswell the thing is it dint until i did that it was quite now it makes loud clicks? what probably happened and is this a problem? and what can i do to fix? please help
If you want good oil go to a music store and get valve oil that stuff is the best. It is literally made for metal on metal and constant movement that's what i use.
I got some WD-40 and filled a little colonge bottle i had (spray nozzle) and i keep that small portion of the WD-40 in my Bug Out Bag so I can keep my knife clean at all times.
Great Video !!! Do you have a Tuf Cloth? I use them both but cloth I have to wash hand every time...... it stinks bad. Also, are they safe on the blade for food preparation?
lol sharping your knifes am the only one in my family who rellay cares about that in my family grandpa makes it duller then dull then has a friend sharping it my cousin says when it get dull he will sharp it on a rock outside my other cousin he will just use the sharping stuff at my house
There is an oil made by Victorinox called "Multitool Oil" or something like that, it doesn't cost much and it seems to be good. I like WD-40 for cleaning and Ballistol for cleaning/lubrication.

To my knowledge it would be fine... although I don't know why you'd want to do this. Bacteria and what not are unable to live on surfaces such as steel anyway. I prefer to clean ANYTHING whether it touches food or not, with biodegradable non toxic items. I personally only use a mixture of water/vinegar and it seems to work just fine. Little bit of rubbing with a very fine cloth (terry cloth or microfiber) and then a mist of distilled water and another rub down. Good as new!
I use an air compressor and gun lubricating oil to clean my knives.
I put Lube Oil on the blades, let it sit for a while, then wipe the oil off, and clean the blades with rubbing alcohol and a cloth. Additionally, one extra thing you might want to do (especially with cheap knives) is to have the *right* size hex tool (allen wrench) for the handle screws, and keep them tight.
The right size grindstone bit on the end of a good dremel can give you a razor sharp edge.
tuf-glide is NOT food grade, so if you use it you cant prep food, I would suggest using somethgin like canola oil to lube your pivot if you want to use your folder for cutting food...wont work as good, but it should get the job done and will be safe to eat...
@cutlerylover i would imagine something like Tu-glide to not seep into the cutting edge of the blade if you only apply a small amount to the pivot screws. Not sure if it would be a problem, but unsaturated fats like canola oil will saturate over time, which may become gummy (if youve ever had grease splatters in the kitchen, youll know what i mean) but it might not be a problem if its applied thinly on the edge itself and if its cleaned and re-oiled frequently.
Since I don't really want to use mineral oil to lube my knives I went with the tuf-glide and tuf-cloth. I'm just wondering, if I do cut up an apple and a miniscule amount of this stuff gets in my system, will it make me sick?
same as other folders, just eb sure to take care of and oil all the pivot poitns, meanign the bas of every tool that moves...where it is connected to the handle...
Just a question, how would I take care of a multi-tool?? Is it similar to a knife. Just bought a Leatherman Charge and have no clue on maintenance of the multi-tool.
same as other folders, just eb sure to take care of and oil all the pivot poitns, meanign the bas of every tool that moves...where it is connected to the handle
Here is the deal though. It looks like some of the oil got into the handle and now it's just unpleasantly greasy and just feels gross to hold and it leaves grease on my hands after use. I have tried getting it off by just rubbing it with paper towels and such but it doesn't seem to all come off. How can I fix and prevent this from happening? Use less oil of course but anything else I can do about prevention of overoiling?
How can I remove the extra oil that's on it now safely?
well you8 olnly need one tear drop of militec on each pivot arera on your 42...just a single tear drop is enough so you know for next time, as for gettign the oil off now..hmmmm well try sipe it as dry as possible with a old towel or rage, not papertowles after that try to use a bit of painjt thinner on the knfie where the oil is that shoudl break ti up a bit then maie it easier to rub completely off...
Heya Jeff! I just got some Militec for my Bm42 but I decided to add it to my crappy folding knife I don't care about before my 42. So I did, Applied it then put it under the hot stream of air from the hairdryer for like 20 min and then added more militec like militec suggests wile it was unpleasantly hot and got it hot again for awile. Ok so it flips very smoothly, it was very bad and scratchy.
You have very informative videos, I love them all. GREAT JOB!!. Could you post a video on 440A steel vs. Other steels and what the differance is in quality and edge retention? Thanks
if a knife is completely submerged in water you want to just dry ti out as fast as you can, using a hairdryer to get into the parts you cna wipe clean, if its saltwater its best to take the knife paart to clean the parts...but yeah balisongs arwe no different...
trhe problem is the bead blasted finish I found at not too logn ago its horrible for rust prevention since it opens up the metal pores, anyway any metal lube or polish sho0udl take care of it...
I've always found that surface rust can normally be cleaned off with a bit of fine-grade machine oil (like sewing machine oil) on the rust spot, then rub the spot quite hard with a scrap of towel. Do this a few times and you'll normally clean the rust off. Surface rust, left on a knife, will start to eat into the steel, so clean it off sooner rather than later.
i was cleaning a gun, and decided to put a squirt of rem oil on my new kershaw scallion. it opened MUCH slower.... washed the oil away with soap and water.. back to normal. why would that happen..?
the only thing I cna imagine is that it was dirty and grimmy inside and when you added the il it gathered up...perhaps try it again now that its all clean...any metal oil shoudl work fine...
You just have to use q-tips and toothpicks...to get in all the tight spots, thats about all you cna do, your right its rivited so you cna tak it paart, but you cna take off the outser plastic scales, they just pop off...but nothgin really gets dirty under them so it doesnt help much....
I was cutting some shrubs with a buck I have and some some sticky stuff was getting on it. I'm wondering if I can wipe it down with a wet paper towel or will that start the rusting process. Also was the black cloth in this clip anything special. Thank alot
You cna get any blade wet to clean it or use it as long as you dry it off when your doen you wil be fine...but for sticky stuff try goo be gone, they sell it at lowes and home depot...works great!
oh sorry forgot to add the comment before i asked if u have any idea how to get rust of a knife i got a columbian river knife and tool point guard small version plain edge and am wondering if u have a solution to my problem i hade it for only like uu.... 4 days and i cleaned it dail i kept it in a brief case with foam sponge like padding never even TOUCHED water yet so thanks
Well some metal oils will remove small surface rust, or metal polish...it rusted because of the condensation in the air, a humid enviroment wil rust meatl it does not need to actually get wet like in water...
No problem, in your suit case is fine as long as you don't keep it wrapped with something, often knives stored in sheaths will do the same thgin, the sheat stores moistuire and makes it rust faster, if you wipe your blade down with a metal oil like Wd-40 or 3 in 1 oil and wipe it clean you cna just store in in your brifcase and still be fine, just check on it from time to time...
Its called serrations...You cna sharpen them on a triangular rod such as on the spyderco sharpmaker sharpenign system, or some companeis sell rod sharpeners that fit certain serration patterns like codl steel or SOG...lasty you can get a tapered sharp[ejnign rod, meaning it comes to a fine tip, but then you need to do it by hand very carefully...
You woudl do the same as I showed here, only a balisong has 2 pivot screws, so two connection points between handles and blade, so you just add a drop of oil in both areas...
For my leatherman wave I occasionally squirt some WD-40 in all the moving areas and joints. Is this "oiling" O.K. or is there something better I could use to oil it?
well if thats all you have its ok, but 3 in 1 oil which is also cheap and easy to find is better in my opinion, there are lubes meant for gun and knife oiling whch is the best...but they will all work since they are all meant for metal...
lol,. yeah I know I have a few peopel who mentioend it in the comments already, lol, I have my midn racinf a mile a minute when I make these videos trying to figure out what to say...I do not rehurse these or pratcide, I just hit record and try to be informative as best as I can...
I just added a vid on using a cramic rod, but I already have a few videos on me using my sharpenign system and talkign ahbout some other sharpenign methods...
Hey, well actually tiny rust specks or dots can sometiekms be common on bead blasted knives, in particular with kershaw for soem reason, its noit a huge deal, infact tuf-glide will work to remove them, but alot of stuff will work, I am not sure what might effect the coating though...As for other rnands, well there is this stuff called militec-1, which is also very nice, not sure what countries it avaliable at though, sorry...
Also both of these lubes ARE toxis, so if your gign to use your knife for food preperation, you do NOT want to use this stuff, a simple canola oil or other oil would be much better...Another thign you cna use to remove the specs is metal polish, my favorite stuff for knives is a compnay called Flitz, but again, toxis, so not for food prep...
Yeah, for some reason Kershaw happen to get it more often than any other knives I ever owned? Perhaps it has somethgin to do with their beadblast process? Anyway its really not a big deal, but it can be annoying...
Well most of the time I use a microfiber cloth...But I ahve used moist paper towels and they work just as fine, just make sure if you use anything wet to dry it well afterwards...
A lot of times I use (here we go with the gun thing again) treated gun cloths (you can get them in most sporting good departments), as they get older and oilier, I just rotate them to suit my needs. I also find that ripped up cotton T-shirts work well. I put a little oil on them and keep them in baggies when not in use. They just become better for the job at hand every time I use them.
I use Benchmade BlueLube, seems good. I have to get some proper tools to take the knives appart 'cause I improvise with victorinox, small screwdeivers, even the tip of scisors and stuff:)
I have Hoppe's gun lubricant in close to the same size needle despenser as the Tuf-Glide. I've had it for probably 20 years and it is only half empty (or is that half full, anyway...). If I am still alive when it is all used up I will just fill it up again. The dispenser is pricless for both firearms and knives.
Yeah, a good lube liek that is worth the small investment...Guns I am sure need it even more than knives to function peoperly...I am not a gun person (woudl love to be but just don't know too much about them) But I always heard they definatly need to be lubed well...
Thanx for the info! Though my fav knife that I carry every day is a Spyderco Harpy, and it doesn't come apart, the only screws on it are for the clip. Any suggestions on a good way of cleaning it out? And this is probably a dumb question, but the handle is completely stainless steel, so I should probably oil that just like the blade too, right?
Hye, yes, your right, you cna treat the handle the same as the blade, I don't know specifically for your harpy, but most stainless steel ahndles are usually a 300 series, whcih can rust a little easier than most stainless steel blades...it won't be too easy, but ti can happen...As for cleaning knives that can't come apart, well just do the best you cna, I woudl use wooden toothpicks and maybe qtips to get into the crevises...BTW the harpy is a nice folder, love that curved hawkbill blade!
CRAP!!! I should have watched this vid earlier cuz I just got a spyderco tenacious and the opening felt alil hard so I put some petroleum jelly and just alil bit and it felt fine after that. well you8 olnly need one tear drop of militec on each pivot arera on your 42...just a single tear drop is enough so you know for next time, as for gettign the oil off now..hmmmm well try sipe it as dry as possible with a old towel or rage, not papertowles after that try to use a bit of painjt thinner on the knfie where the oil is that shoudl break ti up a bit then maie it easier to rub completely off...

Comment 1 of 2

About sharpening steel: can you use those to maintain the edge of hunting and folding knives, or is it restricted to kitchen knives only?
Mantinae 3 years ago
you cna hone any type of knife just remember a huntign knife will be a wide angle than a kitchen knife...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
Thank you
Mantinae 3 years ago

You have very informative videos, I love them all. GREAT JOB!!. Could you post a video on 440A steel vs. Other steels and what the differance is in quality and edge retention? Thanks

Do this apply to balisong maintenance as well? Also do i have and concerns if mm knife was completely submerged in water?
juhmonti 3 years ago
if a knife is completely submerged in water you want to just dry ti out as fast as you can, using a hairdryer to get into the parts you cna wipe clean, if its saltwater its best to take the knife paart to clean the parts...but yeah balisongs arwe no different...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
Hey thanks a lot for the quick reply
juhmonti 3 years ago
Also, if your knife gets wet in salt water, rinse it in fresh water asap if you can. Then dry it. Salt is nasty on steel.

I Picked my Leatherman c301 up the other day and saw 3 little, tiny rust spots. Is there a way to clean rust off a knife?
turtleman173 3 years ago
trhe problem is the bead blasted finish I found at not too logn ago its horrible for rust prevention since it opens up the metal pores, anyway any metal lube or polish sho0udl take care of it...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
I've always found that surface rust can normally be cleaned off with a bit of fine-grade machine oil (like sewing machine oil) on the rust spot, then rub the spot quite hard with a scrap of towel. Do this a few times and you'll normally clean the rust off. Surface rust, left on a knife, will start to eat into the steel, so clean it off sooner rather than later.

i did the same thing you did i was putting wd40 on my blade and i slipped on the blade and got a deep cut ):

i was cleaning a gun, and decided to put a squirt of rem oil on my new kershaw scallion. it opened MUCH slower.... washed the oil away with soap and water.. back to normal. why would that happen..?
gstrader73 3 years ago
the only thing I cna imagine is that it was dirty and grimmy inside and when you added the il it gathered up...perhaps try it again now that its all clean...any metal oil shoudl work fine...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
it was a week old.... carried it for 2 days....lol
gstrader73 3 years ago
i kno not a knife compared to the 1's u was showing but how wud go about cleaning a vitorinox swiss army knife?.. cant take that apart :(
lilsam1618 3 years ago
You just have to use q-tips and toothpicks...to get in all the tight spots, thats about all you cna do, your right its rivited so you cna tak it paart, but you cna take off the outser plastic scales, they just pop off...but nothgin really gets dirty under them so it doesnt help much....

I was cutting some shrubs with a buck I have and some some sticky stuff was getting on it. I'm wondering if I can wipe it down with a wet paper towel or will that start the rusting process. Also was the black cloth in this clip anything special. Thank alot
So1017ccerguy 3 years ago
You cna get any blade wet to clean it or use it as long as you dry it off when your doen you wil be fine...but for sticky stuff try goo be gone, they sell it at lowes and home depot...works great!

oh sorry forgot to add the comment before i asked if u have any idea how to get rust of a knife i got a columbian river knife and tool point guard small version plain edge and am wondering if u have a solution to my problem i hade it for only like uu.... 4 days and i cleaned it dail i kept it in a brief case with foam sponge like padding never even TOUCHED water yet so thanks
knifeguru350 3 years ago
Well some metal oils will remove small surface rust, or metal polish...it rusted because of the condensation in the air, a humid enviroment wil rust meatl it does not need to actually get wet like in water...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
ty where should i keep the knives then ? p.s thank you for helping
knifeguru350 3 years ago
No problem, in your suit case is fine as long as you don't keep it wrapped with something, often knives stored in sheaths will do the same thgin, the sheat stores moistuire and makes it rust faster, if you wipe your blade down with a metal oil like Wd-40 or 3 in 1 oil and wipe it clean you cna just store in in your brifcase and still be fine, just check on it from time to time...

thank you so much

So1017ccerguy 3 years ago

p.s. I ahve no expereicne with the Buck Bantum BLW, but I cna tell you I never had a Buck I didn't like...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
thanx , by the way you shoud do some more reviews on cheap knives because most people cant afford the $400 knives but would love to.
So1017ccerguy 3 years ago
I know thats why I bought a few cheap knives in ym recent order like the Byrd knives and a camillus folder as well as a Benchmade Pika II...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
ok i have a folding knife but it has a saw looking thing at the bottom of it...its a leatherman...so how do i sharpen the saw thing
drumbum5723 3 years ago
Its called serrations...You cna sharpen them on a triangular rod such as on the spyderco sharpmaker sharpenign system, or some companeis sell rod sharpeners that fit certain serration patterns like codl steel or SOG...lasty you can get a tapered sharp[ejnign rod, meaning it comes to a fine tip, but then you need to do it by hand very carefully...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
i want to ask u if u con show how to care for Bm42 and do u need to put drops on Bm42 ?
etq123 3 years ago
You woudl do the same as I showed here, only a balisong has 2 pivot screws, so two connection points between handles and blade, so you just add a drop of oil in both areas...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
thnx man
etq123 3 years ago
For my leatherman wave I occasionally squirt some WD-40 in all the moving areas and joints. Is this "oiling" O.K. or is there something better I could use to oil it?
flyin400 3 years ago
well if thats all you have its ok, but 3 in 1 oil which is also cheap and easy to find is better in my opinion, there are lubes meant for gun and knife oiling whch is the best...but they will all work since they are all meant for metal...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
what is a really good knife for under 50.00 and a non folding blade
modelmaster67 3 years ago
Hmmm, lets see, well Benchmade makes a good cheaper fixed blade called the "Rant" there are a few versions of it, and they all cost @ $50...

2 questions ,
Is tuff glide non toxic ? What would be a good alternative in non USA countries where that brand might not be as available?
and ..... what would you do about rust specs appearing on the blade of a knife with a 'beadblast' finish?
ok that was 3 questions
Thanks in advance
flashdamingo 3 years ago
Hey, well actually tiny rust specks or dots can sometiekms be common on bead blasted knives, in particular with kershaw for soem reason, its noit a huge deal, infact tuf-glide will work to remove them, but alot of stuff will work, I am not sure what might effect the coating though...As for other rnands, well there is this stuff called militec-1, which is also very nice, not sure what countries it avaliable at though, sorry...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
Also both of these lubes ARE toxis, so if your gign to use your knife for food preperation, you do NOT want to use this stuff, a simple canola oil or other oil would be much better...Another thign you cna use to remove the specs is metal polish, my favorite stuff for knives is a compnay called Flitz, but again, toxis, so not for food prep...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
yah my kershaw leek always gets rust spots but wd-40 usually removes the dots if you put it on pretty soon after the dots have formed
PivotAnimat0r 3 years ago
Yeah, for some reason Kershaw happen to get it more often than any other knives I ever owned? Perhaps it has somethgin to do with their beadblast process? Anyway its really not a big deal, but it can be annoying...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
sorry i commentede just before u said u can use any lubricant

cutlerylover 3 years ago
oh yea i almost forgot. . . what kind of cloth do yu use to clean yur knife?
cobraghost91 3 years ago
Well most of the time I use a microfiber cloth...But I ahve used moist paper towels and they work just as fine, just make sure if you use anything wet to dry it well afterwards...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
A lot of times I use (here we go with the gun thing again) treated gun cloths (you can get them in most sporting good departments), as they get older and oilier, I just rotate them to suit my needs. I also find that ripped up cotton T-shirts work well. I put a little oil on them and keep them in baggies when not in use. They just become better for the job at hand every time I use them.
mslizzyborden 3 years ago
Very good tips...I have use oiled cloths (pre-oiled, I bought it once to try it out) in the past as well for bigger knives...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
well where can yu buy that tuf glide????
cobraghost91 3 years ago
newgraham sells it as well as eknifworks, but most online knife stores carry it, average price is $7-$8 a bottle...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
I use Benchmade BlueLube, seems good. I have to get some proper tools to take the knives appart 'cause I improvise with victorinox, small screwdeivers, even the tip of scisors and stuff:)
holdenccc 3 years ago
Ahh, yeah the bluelube works well too, benhcmade also sells whats vcalled the blubox, which is a set of torx bits in a convienant package...

I have Hoppe's gun lubricant in close to the same size needle despenser as the Tuf-Glide. I've had it for probably 20 years and it is only half empty (or is that half full, anyway...). If I am still alive when it is all used up I will just fill it up again. The dispenser is pricless for both firearms and knives.
mslizzyborden 3 years ago
I HATE my own typos.
mslizzyborden 3 years ago
I hear ya loud and clear on that, lol...I always have typos...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
Yeah, a good lube liek that is worth the small investment...Guns I am sure need it even more than knives to function peoperly...I am not a gun person (woudl love to be but just don't know too much about them) But I always heard they definatly need to be lubed well...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
Thanx for the info! Though my fav knife that I carry every day is a Spyderco Harpy, and it doesn't come apart, the only screws on it are for the clip. Any suggestions on a good way of cleaning it out? And this is probably a dumb question, but the handle is completely stainless steel, so I should probably oil that just like the blade too, right?
Thanks in advance for a reply!
drmoo46 3 years ago
Hye, yes, your right, you cna treat the handle the same as the blade, I don't know specifically for your harpy, but most stainless steel ahndles are usually a 300 series, whcih can rust a little easier than most stainless steel blades...it won't be too easy, but ti can happen...As for cleaning knives that can't come apart, well just do the best you cna, I woudl use wooden toothpicks and maybe qtips to get into the crevises...BTW the harpy is a nice folder, love that curved hawkbill blade!
