I just don't think prenatal screening for autism should be done because most people don't understand autism enough to make an intelligent decision regarding the condition. Those with high functioning autism and aspergers can do really well in society, they just need the educational supports to allow them to pursue their academic goals. People with more moderate to severe autism also can use assistive technology to help adapt easier into society (such as ipad).

Kids who are disabled, have autism, or any other PDD as well as medically fragile children who cannot otherwise get health care now will not have access to health care (due to inability to obtain insurance due to lack of SCHIP funding) My son has Aspergers, Cerebral Palsy & Benign Rolandic Epilepsy. He cannot get insurance due to these conditions (we have tried) and the premiums would be too astronomical to afford anyway.

I seriously agree with Obama on this, although Obama never carried out his promises. I actually have autism and the problem is that most neurotypicals don't care about us. Most neurotypicals support stupid things like finding a cure for autism. And you know what I, as an autistic person, has to say to that? Balls! It's a load of balls! We do not need a cure for autism. People with autism are often blessed, and hardly any of us want a cure.
I also agree that it's not a cure that's needed. But a society better equipped to accept and nourish people from all scopes of life! I don't know about the contents of vaccines and if they have anything to do with the increase of autistic people, but I do agree that the "diagnostic scope" of autism has expended.

According to an autism advocate and expert, (my mother, who has two kids with a form of autism, myself included) the autism "rate" is increasing due to the expaneded criteria for autsim. Signs of autism appears as young as 6 months old. A mandatory screening for ALL 2 years would be just a waste of time and money. It would only state the obvious for those that already have autism. I have autism. The only way to "cure" autism is for parents to love their autistic child. You can't put love in a pill. I just hope that parents will stop asking for a cure and just support their children and promote autism awareness.

I am going to look into whether our local hospitals vaccinate at birth as they would have done so without my consent. My son has Autism and he had a lot of shots before he was 6 months old. If Autism runs in families, then doctors should not inject children until they at least are talking and pass their screening. Autism has genetic disposition. The companies doing the studies not independent but sponsored by the drug companies. They need to screen babies from these injections if their is a family history of Autism like my son has.

Spectrum disorders were "known to man" they just weren't *called* "autism" until the 40's, and even then they thought it was childhood schizophrenia.
Elemental mercury has never been put in vaccines. It has been put in tooth fillings, but is no longer. The "mercury" you are talking about is a salt that has a mercury atom in it, that breaks down to ethylmercury in the body and the body disposes of it within about 18 days.
That additive has not been put in U.S. vaccines since about 2001.

Kids who are disabled, have autism, or any other PDD as well as medically fragile children who cannot otherwise get health care now will not have access to health care (due to inability to obtain insurance due to lack of SCHIP funding) My son has Aspergers, Cerebral Palsy & Benign Rolandic Epilepsy. He cannot get insurance due to these conditions (we have tried) and the premiums would be too astronomical to afford anyway.

I know from experience...I'm now paying medical bills for my son that are outrageous. The cost of medication is unreal as well. I'm a single mother who got divorced after leaving my abusive ex. I work 2 jobs & I am also a college student. I need help, but the US gov't doesn't care. My health isn't that great either.

I seriously agree with Obama on this, although Obama never carried out his promises. I actually have autism and the problem is that most neurotypicals don't care about us. Most neurotypicals support stupid things like finding a cure for autism. And you know what I, as an autistic person, has to say to that? Balls! It's a load of balls! We do not need a cure for autism. People with autism are often blessed, and hardly any of us want a cure.

I don't know about the contents of vaccines and if they have anything to do with the increase of autistic people, but I do agree that the "diagnostic scope" of autism has expended.

According to an autism advocate and expert, (my mother, who has two kids with a form of autism, myself included) the autism "rate" is increasing due to the expaneded criteria for autsim. It has grown to include many more people that just those with classic autism. I don't know much about the contents of autism vaccinations, but I also agree that the "diagnostic scope" has expanded.

Secondly, there are a lot studies showing absolutely no evidence that an increased number of vaccines harms anyone. Thirdly, the vaccines have to be administered after birth since thats when diseases are most prevalent..Any later, babies might already be infected before they get vaccinated.

Signs of autism appears as young as 6 months old. A mandatory screening for ALL 2 years would be just a waste of time and money. It would only state the obvious for those that already have autism. I have autism. The only way to "cure" autism is for parents to love their autistic child. You can't put love in a pill. I just hope that parents will stop asking for a cure and just support their children and promote autism awareness.

I have concluded from studying both the similarities and variences in Asperger and Autistic brains (mostly from science daily articles, onlne SPECT scans etc) that Autism and Aspergers' are only coincidentally related and that Autism is just a damaged Asperger brain.
It would be somewhat agregious to confuse the two (and could be a deligitimizing slur in this context).

Okay, obvioussly we have a problem with definitions (obvioussly because of the understandibly sloppy nature of the scientific method and the relatively recent understandings on the subject).
I did not come up with the designation "Low-Functioning Autism", it was created to distinguish from "High-Functioning Autism" (which seems to just be the Asperger + a few minor coincidental factors).

I define "autism" as a situation were someone (often with AS) is wholly obsorbed at expense of the intellect or even self-awareness, and it seems to corolate with actual brain damage (left frontal and temporal lobes).
Aspergers' is a neuromophological tendency with an evolutionary preference for intellectual/prognosticatory pursuites over 'mammalian' impulses. Aspies *can* act "normal" for neccesity, it's just not a default. It seems NOT to be a "light Autism" as is widely believed.

I've become very unnerved with the almost reckless conflation of the Asperger phenotype with autism from all ends of the issue.
On one side there seems to be interests who want to protect themselves from liability in regards to public health, whilst on ther other end there are parties who seem to desire calling intellegent people like Aspergers "mentally ill" in fear that we will be hard to control with traditional pacification techniques.
In this context, I see "autism" as a slur...

two special needs children 2 wrong diagnosis, two wrong treatments. i tried to get help for them and there is no help availible. do i want them on meds no i want a therapy treatment that will help there social skills. it can't help when teachers hurt them and they are still recovering from it. Please no more med treatments we need theraphy and such availible for these children and proper diagnosis so that we can get proper treatment.

That really has yet to be determined, but the cause of my son's speech delay are obvious and have nothing to do with vaccines.
I appreciate your conviction, but I'm not being brainwashed by anyone. I have a relatively strong formal education in the sciences, so I'm able to evaluate many of the claims made by various people and wade through medical studies relatively well.
Much of the research I've done about the subject has simply been to find examples of pseudo-science for classroom work.

Weren't you [the parents] vaccinated before conceiving? Was the mother's diet clean of chemicals? Is your environment clean of chemicals? Are you sure your kids were not vaccinated with hepatitis vaccine right when they were born? This is kind of standard procedure, they are vaccinated in the first day of life. If you want your kids to get better investigate for yourself don't get defensive. Look into alternative medicine.

It's been a while since I commented here so being quick. I haven't been vax'd for anything since 1984 and have been totally fine. My husband either in as long or maybe longer. I am going to look into whether our local hospitals vaccinate at birth as they would have done so without my consent. My home is free of chemical cleaners, I did not smoke, drink or ingest drugs during pregnancy or years before being pg. Clean environment...is there anywhere on earth left that is like that?? :(

For starters - You da man Obama!! The only thing wrong with vaccines is that some of them carry a preservative called Thimerosal which is a form of mercury - too much of this preservative causes side affects in children who's bodies are too sensitive to accept it. Autism is a very deep situation - I myself have a form of it, but it isn't a disease or disability - it's someone who's come into this world to help us understand more about ourselves, to let go of judgment and to love each other more

Well, I believe it isn't necessarily the Thimerosal. It's the inborn hypersensitivity conbined with the shock of the vaccine. In some cases, we have been slightly experienced enough to understand that pain. These are non-regressives. They may also be primarily inattentive ADHD females with special interests in interpersonal learning who would not get spotted or diagnosed.

My son has Autism and he had a lot of shots before he was 6 months old. If Autism runs in families, then doctors should not inject children until they at least are talking and pass their screening. Autism has genetic disposition. The companies doing the studies not independent but sponsored by the drug companies. They need to screen babies from these injections if their is a family history of Autism like my son has.

He's right. Early intervention can help. As an autistic I was lucky enough to be diagnosed early. Age 2 and a half. I got the help I needed in my childhood and now nobody can even tell I have it. Obama is amazing and those who judge him harshly need to stfu.

Spectrum disorders were "known to man" they just weren't *called* "autism" until the 40's, and even then they thought it was childhood schizophrenia.
Elemental mercury has never been put in vaccines. It has been put in tooth fillings, but is no longer. The "mercury" you are talking about is a salt that has a mercury atom in it, that breaks down to ethylmercury in the body and the body disposes of it within about 18 days.
That additive has not been put in U.S. vaccines since about 2001.

The germ theory is just a theory; the belief that microorganisms are the cause of diseases. Microorganism are all around us. A dead body is fast eaten/decomposed by microorganisms. Are the live bodies in the same environment eaten the same way? NO. It's homeostasis making the difference, and the fact that those microorganisms are scavengers. Otherwise, we ALL would be eaten alive by them. Use your brain, have some logic.
Dr. Moulden is RIGHT, you are brain washed.

If you don't have a good basis for understanding, some guy who knows a lot of big words can somehow convince you that all micro-organisms are the same and work the same and that if the germ theory were correct we would be eaten alive (a few micro-organisms CAN do that).
Dr. Moulden wants you to believe that he has special knowledge and insight that other people don't so he can snow you into buying shit.
