Yes, it is a western bit..But that is not how you hold the reins while riding western. I've rode in the western discipline for 10 years, and any trainer will tell you to keep your hands low*...you never keep your hands up that high while riding a horse. It can cause severe discomfort for the horse, and a very unpleasant ride for both the horse and rider.
As for this lady's training technique, I'd much rather my horse be taught to side pass with low hands. Her advice was good, but I agree with Jordanoid202. This lady should have kept her hands out of the horse's mouth, as side passing should be encouraged by foot pressure, not the reins.
In conclusion, no, that is not how you "hold the reins and ride western".
I need to know how to teach a horse to side pass... like how do you teach them? Your showing us how to do it with a horse that is all ready trained to side pass, but how do you do it if the horse doesnt know how? Good job though. Pretty horse
fantastic information- thanks, anyone sampled Olays newest range of products?? it is not easy to find decent makeup in Corwin yet you can obtain some impressive samples of makeup by using "GratisMakeupSamples"! their handy.
you are a fat dum b.....ch you sow us just what you can do with your horse this is not teaching ,stop please cuse this is not easy or funny you can kill some people .....
This is not teaching a horse anything. This is ust a demo on what aids to use on an already trained horse. Which is fair enough. I don`t really care for expertvillage...(the name says it all...)
no matter how trained the horse is its the same method of how you do it. If it was un trained it would just take a bit more time. I think she is doing a great job, thats how i trained my 3 year old to do this.
i just dont like how they use horses that are already trained to do things. it would be much easier if they used a young horse that cant sidepass so you can see what will happen when YOU try to do it. just throwing it out there
wow yall are all such jack asses not only do you make fun of her appearance you make fun of how she does things this is her method and if you dont like it leave but some people want to learn here
she may not be the best, but you have to admit, she's WAY better than Sarah Stetner(sp?) the old 'expert' Expert Village had on here! omg, she was a trainwreck!
not for this woman or the horse. lol. the horse knows what is being asked of it and only trying to do it right, the woman is making his body go all out of wack.
the 'expert' is not totally wrong. just because most of her other videos are not correct does not mean that people should go around commenting how stupid you think she is. thats just plain immature. now about the video. lol. when you sidepass a horse their whole body must be in a straight line, she is pulling the horse's chin in the direction of the sidepass, that is only ok if the horse tries to resist your leg and act like they dont want to move off. for people who know what they are doing.
It would be much more helpful to show how to do a sidepass with a green horse....I would have no idea how to start with a horse who doesn't already sidepass....
From the ground to teach them how to move over their hips and then their shoulders with very little pressure. When they are giving both ends well, bring him up to a fence and have him face the fence. Stand at his shoulder and ask him to give his hips. Then ask him to give his shoulder. (to move away from you) Then ask for the hips and again then the shoulders and on and on. Back and forth and back and forth.
Thanks so much for making this video. And to everyone who's saying negative stuff, you didn't pay her to create this video, so try not to be so judgemental. Thanks again this helped me out. :)
Someone took the time to make this video and it is clear they did so with the best of intentions. For those that have made negative comments...um...yes, this is how you would "train" your horse to side pass in this manner. And, if you can't say something nice - please try to simply say nothing.
If you are going to claim to be an expert, then you should not only have horse knowledge, but teaching knowledge. You do not clarify where the feet are in the midsection. In front of the girth, behind the girth? Where are your hands? Where is your seat bone? PLEASE for the sake of us real horse people, DON'T TEACH! YOU OBVIOUSLY DON't KNOW HOW!!
You are supposed to lean to the opposite side to "free"(take the weight off of) the side you want to move to. This leaves the side you want to move, open to move into.
I've been practicing but when I do this she always backs up? Is there something I might be doing wrong? I've always rode english with my horse but i've started western recently. It's so much fun! Thanks for the help!
if your horse backs up in the sidepass then you dont have enough forward motion. i wouldnt start with doing sidepasses but work up to them by teaching your horse to work off your legs by doing lateral movements. hold their head and neck in a straight line and keep their body between your legs and use one leg or the other to move their hip then work up to their shoulder and hip in a halfpass then eventually your horse will be able to recognize a cue for a sidepass.
Ur horsey is so pretty :)

This woman is a joke about everything... Idiots shouldn't be allowed to own a horse... She clearly is one of them
PiggyDog89 2 years ago
Yeah I do agree though. This is not how a dorse is supposed to sidepass either. Its head should be straight, NOT bent.
She looks nothing like a horse rider either...

Not real helpful at all. Unless your on a horse that KNOWS how to do it already. This doesn't show how to teach him.

Is the rider supposed to lean to the opposite side? Or are the stirrups too long? Just my opinion but the rider doesn't seem too balanced here.
