Is inter-specie breeding of ants possible(as in two different species breeding)

@GoldenSilence333 Closely related subspecies can interbreed. E.g. here in North America Lasius neoniger and Lasius Alienus are subspecies of Lasius niger and all of these often interbreed.

@klumps13 I'm sorry to hear that. Yes, that is always tragic and certainly one of the risks with choosing to dig up a wild colony. It is also why many choose to raise their queens from scratch, as in catching a gravid queen ant during nuptial flight season. I speak more about this in my book about collecting ants and queens found at our store.

are soldier ants as big as the queen?

In some ants like those belonging to the genus Camponotus, yes the soldiers/majors/supermajors can be as big as the queen. Sometimes it can be a challenge to tell them apart without closely examining the thorax.

@klumps13 No, not necessarily. Our store sells all kinds of formicaria good for starting gravid queens off. Some people also find success at starting colonies in CD case setups with cotton, dirt setups, and others. You essentially have to make them feel like they're closed off in an underground chamber. No gelfarms, though! Hope this helps! :)

@eaturpiez lol yes, that's because the date is different depending on what species of ant it is. Google will help you with that. For instance, Prenolepis imparis is flying right now. Next month will be Tetramorium and some Camponotus species.

No, don't let them go. They will die off on their own and may not mate because they aren't able to have the space to fly off for nuptial flight. They also lack some of the environmental cues that trigger them to undergo nuptial flight (unless of course you keep your antfarm outside).

LOL Yes, I noticed that! I considered the female alates and the queen one character, but yes, I should have included the "fat" queen in the cast. She probably felt left out :*(
