  • at 0:43, clara looks very beautiful!

  • This scene scared the crap out of me as a kid.

  • There should b a petition to bring this to DVD or Blue-ray. I know it's on ITunes, tho I don't really like them b/c half the time they don't have the music I'm looking for. Just a twisted version with a different(BAD)singer. I still luv this movie tho, and my kid luvs it also thru YouTube. So petition ppl. We need a DVD release.

  • see if i saw three headed rats i would of been out

  • Had this on VHS it was one of my favorites except for the fact that the male dancers tight were a bit too tight if you know what I mean, that was the only disturbing thing about the movie..

  • Gotta love Clara's exploding pink glowing shoe!

(Not to mention everthing else!" <3 There should be a petition or something for this to be on dvd!

  • This was the version where I learned that the real Mouse King had 7 heads (as in the ETA Hoffman story). My god he gave me nightmares when I was little! He looks pretty cool now though.

  • I take that back...she's kinda expressionless.

  • I've never imagined Clara with THAT ugly thing in her hair. Or Drosselmeyer being a creeper. Or the Nutcracker being so short. Other than that...way good.

  • i love this version...and i know its based off the drawings in that one book..but i still wish the nutcracker wasnt so scary looking

  • Shoe Bomb!

  • Is this the one where Clara becomes the Sugar Plum Fairy?

  • yeah

  • This scene terrified me growing up and I still find it terrifying now. I really wish they'd put this out on DVD, because my VHS is currently in America and Youtube videos are the only way I can watch this incredible interpretation of The Nutcracker.

  • Wow now I'm feeling really out of the loop. Despite going to the PNB production every year without fail I never knew there was a movie version that used the same designs...with the added bonus of including the book's detail about the Mouse King having seven heads (although the giant one headed version is still damn cool too).

  • Yeah! You go Nutcracker! You those mice and rats what happens when they mess with your girl! =D KAAAAAAAA-BLOOM!

  • those rats/mices scared the hell out of me..when i was a kid..with all the music...hehe

  • when i was a kid...i was sooooooo scared of this scene..hehe

  • @leamorena89 So was I. I remember watching this on WGN and I had nightmares. It still scares me though, even at age 13 xD

  • The first time I saw this, the face of the nutcracker scared the crap out of me

  • @lexief1114 sorry, but I thought it was a rat b/c of how big it was. I luv the nutcracker as much as anyone. But it's been awhile.

  • Creepy, but I like it. I think Hoffmann would too. He was very big on the concept of "The Uncanny"

  • The Rat King freaked me out when I was little.

  • @Kuroneko388 it,s a mouse king i now beces i am in te nutcrecer

  • @SnitchyGirl7 yeah where's a cat when ya need one^_^

  • hmmm... it appears as though clara might want to call an exterminator...

  • Is that a rat or a hyrda? Lol.

  • @redchucktaylors5 No it,skingmouse

  • i was in the Nutcracker yrs ago, loved it alot... live version is better than this one...

  • its Clara who throws the magical shoe.

i think the live version is sooooo much better,

    i was a soldier twice.....

  • okay wtf....marie throws her shoe and the rat king dies???!?! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH i was laughing so hard when that part happened. and does anyone think the nutcracker looks like freaking mario?

  • Wow, this is an amazing version! I have to rent this on Netflix...

  • I can see Tim Burtin doing this with Johnny Depp playing the Nutcracker, its bound to happen...

  • this looks like a scary movie...i've never seen it before...has anyone seen the whole thing? is it good?

  • yes

  • Thanks for posting!

  • Wow, Nutcracker looks like he's got problems

  • @ jldmurray13

WOW, you're stuck up, condescending and rude. How about you let people who enjoy this continue to do so. I'm sorry everyone in the universe doesn't enjoy the exact same thing you do. So you're a dancer, well that must mean you know EVERYTHING. You've proven you have no depth, are not open to any opinion but your own and what you're told to regurgitate by your teachers. You've managed to embarrass yourself in front of complete strangers with record speed. Congratulations.

  • This has to be one of my favorite scenes from the motion picture. but my real favorite is the opening credits with the toy maker. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of this film?

  • You know you could order it online with your parents permission

  • so you can order omost everything online with permission who cares

  • Man, this original and first verson of the Nutcracker sure brings back the Christmas memories from my childhood!!!!!

  • 1:30 would be scary for little kids i thought the nutcracker was a kids show not based on the dark book.

  • the book isn't dark,

it's just the fight scenr and it's sopposed to be that way becuz it's a WAR for crying out pete's sake

  • yea i have never seen the nutcrackers this weird and I WOULD NEVER WASTE MY MONEY on a junky show like this!!. and the book is dark in someways. I just don't like it casue i am use to the happy go lucky Nutcrackers like the george balanchine one

  • You wouldn't have to waste your money on a "junky" show like this; It's a video production that's available both online and at libraries all over the country. The production follows the story very closely as the writers intended. I respect your opinion but it'd be more fair to say you don't enjoy it than to say it's "junky." In regards to the dancers, they're all great performers, and this embodies the vision which was intended.

  • yea you would have to waste your money if you where going to see it live

  • the George Balenchine one doesn't have near the credentials this does, this wasn't even in theatres and the sets and costumes are still better.

  • George Balenchine is one of the best choreography of all time. And NYC did film theirs and it was not on a stage it had macaulay culkin in it. And the custumes and sets in that one where way better. Everyone i know who knows something about GOOD BALLET would say that this would be to scary for little kids also when this was on tv my parents would not let be watch it because it would destroy my view on the good ones like NYC.

  • @jldmurray13

I Don't know if that is directed at me or not, but I will say this: the costumes, sets, overall design asthetic and basic look of this version Beats the Macaulay Culkin version out of the water. Maurice Sendak as production designer is but one of the many reasons why I believe this to be the superior version.

Oh And I've been doing Ballet since I was 6, so I'm not exactly without backup.

  • sorry NYCB one is way better and maybe i am not talking about the macaulay culkins version.

Oh and just to let you know i did ballet for 8 years and was part of dance school/ballet company who the Artistic Director was the youngest person every to be addmited in to the NYCB company so a know alot more about balenchines nutcracker than you think i do because hers was based on it and i was in it for 7years

  • @jldmurray13

Ah well theres your problem, Every Nutcracker that I have been a part of the director has always done something original, rather than mimicking someone Elses Work.

  • Just to tell you she has on of the best Ballet Company's in New England. And her nutcracker is original the only ones she use is snow and walts of the flowers the rest she designed herself. She also got award the Balenchine's trust the grants her to do his ballet becasue the company is so good SO DON'T PUT DOWN SOMEONES GREAT WORKS THAT YOU KNOW NOUTHING ABOUT

  • You said, and I qoute, "hers was based on it (the Balenchine version)" So I was merely going off what you said. Just out of curiosity how old are you? Your typing is atrocious. And I maintain the PNB version is better, right down to the effects. The balenchine version lacks any attention to detail.

  • Again, I'm talking about Design Asthetic. The sets, costumes etc. were designed to look as though the story were taking place in a painting, picture book-like almost. And go back and read what you sent me, you did say "based on" Balenchine. One of the biggest problems I have with the Balenchine one is the tree: when it gets bigger, to show Marie is shrinking, all the ornaments and candles stay THE SAME SIZE. They should be getting bigger, as she is getting smaller. See? Attention to detail.

  • So you like Balenchine Dance style but not the sets and customs

and no i did not say the whole thing was based on Balenchine a few dances are based on it like Walts of the Flowers,Snow and Marzipan shepherd

Is the PNB Nutcracker like this every season when they do it on a stage or did they change it for the movie?

  • yea it kind of is was the writer crazy or something? that what someone said????

  • OMG!! I loved this movie when i was a kid and have been looking for it !

  • The live show is a lot better.

I've only seen it once, but it was a lot better than the tv version.

  • @Splashlerz Cool, is the mouse king different in the play?

  • @smercuryfangrl9 The mouse king is nearly 2 stories tall and comes out at the very end of the battle in the PNB's stage version. It's incredibly cool. I've seen it 4-5 times with my older children and finally get to take my youngest (she's 4) this year!

  • @meandmy2phans Wow. That sounds really cool. Our Nutcracker is good here but our Mouse King has only 1 head and doesn't grow at all... :(

  • @smercuryfangrl9 same thing in mine i am a batle doll.

  • @smercuryfangrl9 thank you for understanding it,s a mouse king

  • @lexief1114 Lol, you're welcome. And yes, it is a mouse king. I've seen the nutcracker almost every year (mostly on TV, 3 times live, 4 if we count this year) so I can't let that knowledge go to waste, lol. Do you like this battle scene? It used to scare me as a little girl, (and as a teen it still does) but it was pretty good IMO.

  • @Splashlerz how so ive seen photos which i love whats diffrant

  • i love the nutcracker, Seattle is best. this is the movie version, but the live show is sooo much better i was in the fight scene....

  • Notice the famous Wilhelm Scream at 6:52

  • This movie was such an important part of my childhood, it will always be my favorite.

  • whats that thing on her head?

  • ROFL the shoe exploded!! Haha, I wish my show had exploded when I played the role of Clara!

  • loved this movie when i was a kid!

  • i did my schools nutcraker i was a solder

the battle scene is the best part

  • I saw this nutcrack ballet in Seattle, Washington last weekend and they did all this but not the same way, it was at a place called Mccaw Music Hall and the Mouse king was huge.

  • same!

  • same! this is done by the same group but its the film

  • that was one UGLY nutcracker. xD

  • I was in this scene with PNB last year, haha.... I was red infantry:)

  • i was to... like 20yrs ago and then again as a tan one, but sadly i died.

    i missthose days

  • Fun.... ya last year I got carried off by a mouse. YIKES!!

    :)

  • Oh my goodness! I used to watch this incessantly as a kid! I had the choreography memorized for the whole movie! And I would dance to it over and over (of course, several of the parts I was not talented enough to do, but I pretended)! ^_^

  • Comment removed

  • lol, all the walls like...turn inside out

  • The Mouse King is so creepy looking! He freaking grows a more heads! I love the music, the tree is awesome, the dancers\ actors are amazing but the nutcracker's face is a little creepy. The soldiers are great!

  • omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is so cheese!!!!!!!!!! and almost insulting. and the nutcracker is REALLY creepy!!!!!!!!!!! omg but i love this music.

  • Thanks for putting this up! I was the little girl mouse and one of the soldiers with the canons in the stage show when I was little. I have looked for this everywhere!

  • Oh, the memories..... I'll always remember the good times at PNB :'(

  • I'm scared.

  • Yo no me imaginaba que existía algo así... ¡¡¡ALUCINANTE!!!

  • this is cool but creepy, if I had seen this when I was little I would have been soooo scared

  • she looks more amused than scared. I love this version though. I'm so mad that they don't show it anymore!!!!
