Must be why the UK's exports are BOOMING, the property markets are RISING (I know because I'm buying a house for cash!) and the commerical property market here is fine... unlike in the usa where everything that can be measured is failing and you're about to have catastrophe #2 in the form of the OTHER mortgage crisis.

As an american (at least a responsible one), I can assure you she is the exception and not the rule. I live wihin my means and there needs to be a penalty extracted from those that do not. The idea that people learn from their mistakes needs to be applied here. The gov't doesn't seem to understand that anymore and mistakenly believes the problem lives in the capitalistic system. If we truly had a capitalistic system there would be no bailouts and the bad decisions would be punished.

@flangelet Maybe you should look at the tax laws and incentives we have in the continental United States on people starting their own businesses and investments before you make an ignorant statement like that.

@informedskeptic Unfortunately, those AMericans are not punished. They can file Bankruptcy on their unsecuritized debt, walk away from their debt obligations, and today delete the derogatory items from the three major credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax and Transunion. What a great country!

We haven't the same problems in the UK.
We cannot build houses in the non-existant deserts/swamps like the usa. We are a small island with limited space & a growing population.
