As a kid I read that during the depression and prohibition, she was nicknamed "Bargainarea".The U.S.sailed her for discount cruises.Apparently something called "near beer" was served in her bars.It couldn't have been any blander than O'Douls.
@exeuroweenie - same ship, first one of three German giants created by Albert Ballin. The list was due to the vertical height of the design rather than the eagle - she was top-heavy.
Same ship - first of three German giants created by Albert Ballin for the Hamburg-America Line. The list was due to a design flaw - the Imperator was notoriously top-heavy. They cut the funnels down and added additional ballast, which helped a little.
@kcgrappler Ok,thanks.I read the Queen Mary(1) rolled heavily at first, too. And that the Andrea Doria and Cristoforo Colombo were notoriously top heavy. That being before the Doria's accident.

@Abricialio The British didn't save the Mauretania, either. Not very smart- scrapping potential transport ships when war clouds were brewing over Europe.
Actually, it's neither Cunard or White Star Line. It used to belong to the German HAPAG Line as the Imperator. After the first world war though, Germany was forced to give it up to Cunard to repair the loss of the Lusitania.
The same for "Bismarck" (finished 1919) became "Majestic" in 1922 and "Caledonia" in 1936 sold to Admiralty as cadets training ship, burned and sank in 1939.
Not "All" White Star Line vessels ended in "ic", but the vast majority of them did. Regina, Lapland, Zeeland, Pittsburgh, Poland, Haverford, Mobile, Vaderland, Southland, Armenian, Victorian and Royal Standard are WSL's non "ic" ships.
If the housing and oil markets don't improve we will have an even worse "crash" we are all living on plastic........America is paying for a war with China's money - look out!!

@exeuroweenie - that's true. And in her days as a German liner, she was called the "Limperator" due to her tendency to list precariously!
kcgrappler 3 months ago
@kcgrappler Wonder if the list had to do with that kitschy eagle(looked demonic) on her bow.Or was that the same ship?
