this man was one of the greatest intellectuals ever, and his doctrine is one of the most realistic and the most true doctrines ever. REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR.
what you call enlightened liberal humanists are the most bigoted, narrow minded, hollow- in-the-head, put-politcs-ahead-of-reality-every-time awfully-certain-they-are-correct (with not a shred of physical evidence) pretending to care about everybody except their own kinfolk people, feigning a moral compass but hating everything Western implicitly or expressed depending on the audience, I have ever run into.
As an African, I still hold the grudge against him, for ostensibly ignoring the contribution of Africa to the world's civilisation, his narrow views on immigration in America, and the role of the US in the 21st century. But I respect him for facing the controversy and criticism with courage, like a true member of academia. Finally, like we say in Africa, when a teacher dies, its a whole library that's lost. Still ideas never die.
In "the clash", Huntington was a visionary in his own way... with his failures and shortcomings. The bottom line is, he saw something coming or happening, at a time few paid attention. Did he lay out his views properly? Its a matter of debate. Whether he was totally wrong remains to be seen.
Silly gomon2gimon. You're selling your own continent short.
East Asia is the red herring of the 21st century. The West, India, and sub-Saharan Africa will all be much more interesting places to watch for the next hundred years.
Huntington has never been a good theorist. His efforts was always to make useful and functional predictions for the USA foreign affairs while he is also trying to legitimize the hegemony of the USA.
when he says 'everyone wants to be modern but not western' i think he's wrong. much of the islamic world clearly wants to be neither modern nor western. they really want to roll the clock back to the 14th century. they're like violent hippies. the SDS in the 60's wanted to go back to the middle ages and live in small communes. they're relatively similiar ideals.
i dont know where and how you get these ideas, but something obvious that you miss the point. Yes, there is a general reaction in Islamic civilazation to modernity and its hegemonic characteristic over other civilizations, but this does not mean they are totally denying it. Actually, what islamist thinking nowadays deal about how can we answer the moden issues with our own islamic doctrine and thoughts. It is also a matter of adaptation.
he is an insane hateful genius. The intelligence and logic in the chain of his arguments is undeniable but while his inherit socially conservative biases are highly distasteful to me personally I don't know that he is wrong in any of his predictions
Huntington promotes violence and hatred...and seeks newer enemies for US to defeat..ideology like his is dangerous and destructive...and would lead to US downfall..
You sound like another whining muslims. At least Foud Ajami had the decency to concede that Samuel Huntington was right. You should admit your situation.
Clash of civilization seemed unrealistic in the 90's but now it seems so real. My salute to Samuel Huntington.

He's a social scientest. He is not entitled to be hateful or insane. Nor do I think his thoughts are. Its a descriptive theory, not a normative.
He was wrong his argument in 'the clash' on there being a clash between the west and the far east.
