it is amazing how many interests the people on this planet have. i find it a bit strange that someone would love chess so much to write someone's biography or read the whole chess history but i guess that is a matter of personal taste in the very end
@ 8:17 am I missing something? Either black queen takes rook, or black rook moves down and you have mate. Why move queen to F3? and how does that mate?
@jessicafischerqueen-Here on YT, if you can handle a German movie without Eng. subs is something you might really like.If you've been bitten by the chess bug it's your kind of candy.Uploaded as "Schachnovelle"(Scacco alla follia)"-1. for part 1. It stars Curt Jurgens and Claire Bloom. B&W 1960's vintage. The world chess champion is aboard ship,a game is arranged, the champion will not even sit at table with opponents...a man who has never played walks over to the board..the champion has a problem!
@jessicafischerqueen In my opinion the book "Schachnovelle" by Stefan Zweig is extremely underrated, It's definitely worth learning German ;) (No joke, if you're a reader and have capacity for one more language- it should be German, there's a huge treasure of German literature)
Morphy never attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, which didn't exist at the time. He attended what is now called Tulane University, which was indeed called the University of Louisiana at the time.
@jessicafischerqueen No problem. Since I'm from Lafayette (but now reside in New Orleans), a part of me does wish that he had spent some time there. But to this day, they still don't have a law school there. You did a very fine job on this video by the way. Thanks!
At the five minute mark, is that an actual photo of Morphy?????? If not, do you know where any may be. I would like to know exactly of his appearance. Thank you.
@savannahjoel As far as I know it is not a photo of Morphy- or Maurian for that matter. Looks like Morphy though eh? I thought it was him when I found the image.
That's a great video, thanks. Ah Morphy! A genius, I love replaying his games. I reckon Morphy would have beaten Steinitz when they met if they had played. As Bobby Fischer said Morphy, with the benefit of accumulated theory, would still be world class today. Morphy was a genius. Memorising the entire Louisiana statute book
A ''short game'' took 15 hours!!!! No wonder they invented time controls.... holy crap, if I had 15 hours for every game, I'd be playing at grandmaster level (or fall asleep)... How can anyone NOT find the perfect move in 15 hours!! That Paulsen was no chess master. There's no real chess master that needs 15 hours to play chess... ridiculous!
Dumbest chess puzzle ever. White sacrifices the rook and moves a pawn forward and it's over for Black. How is that thing even a ''puzzle''? There is nothing to puzzle about, it's beginners level.
Nice video, but does the first song really fit? I mean, Morphy died in 1884... Jazz is a 20th century art... with New Orleans "Dixieland" not coming "en vouge" until 1910... That's like setting a vid about MLK Jr. to rap music.
@hindupushup68 You are correct- yes the jazz song is anachronistic. Jazz hadn't been invented yet. I decided to go with the Jazz anyways just to "set the scene" of New Orleans in a way that would be immediately recognizable to all.
The mate in 2 problem: kbK5/pp6/1P6/8/8/8/8/R7 is wonderful, and I use it often with my students to illustrate the counter-intuitive nature of some positions. It wouldn't surprise me it was Morphy who indeed composed it.
@sharpnova2 I prefer the aesthetic of a "silent film"- I'd rather let the music do the talking for me. I know you can talk while the music is playing, but it tends to "break the mood."
These videos are meant to be more aesthetic than informative.
Jessica: About the 15 hr. game in NYC --- was there no time limit on moves in 19th Century chess? I love your images --- the editing is admirable & the mix of music you use is Lovely! ~ttt~
@tomthumbtoo There was no time limit per game in that Match- but by the time Steinitz hit the scene they started to use chess clocks and time limits. The first chess clocks were sand glasses.
Love the collection of images. good work. good research. The production quality blows to be honest. Windows movie maker is shit... and so is the font used. I mean hey its whatever, interesting mindset on what you find interesting. Its entertaining to me because I love retro shit but a simple upgrade in how you put it together would push such videos to be a bit less painful.
l must say this was very well thought out and very enjoyable to watch. So props to all those who you mentioned in your inspiration...especially to Khaiki Awaits, without being a subscriber, l wouldn't have seen this.
This chess film is dedicated to Travis Bickle, who told me to make it, to Sony Magellan, who inspired me to make podcasts, and to KalkiAwaits for his amazing chess history films.

freezazoid 4 months ago
@freezazoid 8:17 ...queen to F1 I see the problem with that. But rook down to e1 seems to be the answer... why would he move queen to F3?
freezazoid 4 months ago
@freezazoid
17..Qxf3 (the queen sac) 18. gxf3 Rg6+ 19. Kh1 Bh3 20. Rd1 Bg2+ 21. Kg1 Bxf3+ 22. Kf1 Bg2+ 23. Kg1 Bh3+ 24. Kh1 Bxf2 25. Qf1 Bxf1 26. Rxf1 Re2 27. Ra1 Rh6 28. d4 Be3
I hope that helps! I think 22... Rg2 would've been quicker, though. I think rook down to e1 runs into queen takes queen.

It's Ra6. Pawn takes rook or moves his bishop, if take, then pawn b7 checkmate; if he moves bishop, Ra7 checkmate.

the song is famous, but i don't have any idea about the name
I have more question
what kind of person was Paul Morphy ?
I'm documenting in to write a fictional story about him, but is not easy because i dont' have much book and information
I think him so elegant and beautiful, and for me the best chess player , but i have a short knowledge about chess

@IlluminatoSavio I'm sorry- I just looked through all my folders and I can't find it. I don't remember the name of it either?
Can anyone help us out? What is the jazz song opening the video?

I think of Paul Morphy and I hear Don McLean's song Vincent. He was so much more than his time.

ah hah WTF. HOw come that was drawn at 3 ;36? that is so funny.:)
chingisbold 1 year ago
@chingisbold That endgame at 3:36 wasn't drawn, it was an easy win for Morphy. That's why it says "1-0" not "1/2 - 1/2"
