I think its better to build bridges around and underneath the islands and look from the inside. To dig down is never a good idea, at least not one block wide

if you right click a block with the right type of tool, the block flies UPWARDS

as in right click dirt with a grav. shovel, and the dirt flies up

right click dirt with a grav. pickaxe, the dirt will stay

I did not use this method but I have found some Gravitite. Using the F3 for a depth guide, I found it at Y=25 and Y=28. Find very low floating islands and dig deep.
