ummm... lol obviously I'm not talking about beam weapons in general. If you read how the conversation went on I am referring to Brera's weapons as the "beam weapons" in this particular conversation. Before you nitpick on me on how I am not naming any particular weapon maybe you'd like to read and get a clue first on what I'm referring to as beam weapons. Obviously not everyone who watches macross can be bothered to research and remember every specific weapon this series throws at us.

@temiel202 i just cant dig it. when the hand to hand was first used in sdf macross it was cool because it was more last resort. it gave it more drama. having it as an option is good if you like it. i dont. i didnt even like the knifes in the strike gundam in gundam seed.

There are no subs so you probably don't understand the reason but at that time they just found out that their other weapons were no longer working against the vajra. Brera and his lackeys beam weapons were still effective but only Brera's group has access to those weapons so yeah ozma and the others used their knives as a last resort.

@bertkore See now I could understand beam weapons, ala Gundam Wing and any other Gundam series for that part. But take Gundam Seed for example alongside here in Macross Frontier... 100+ years into the future and still messing around with large but still conventional knives? Shouldnt they have beam weapons instead? IMO, of course. But looking back too its all homage in MF, hence the begining of the battle with a similar type of reaction missile from SDF Macross. Whatever works is cool.

@tmoore2010 The thing here is that these veritechs have no beam weapons at all. In Gundam their technology allows them to have most of their units to have access to wtf pwnage beam weapons. Macross has always been about machine guns and missiles and sometimes melee. Only flagships have beam weapons(main cannons). In Frontier only brera's unit had beam weapons cause his unit was using new non mainstream technology.

@bertkore I"m pretty sure you're wrong. The vf1 had always have beam weapon options in the form of super packs which pack a anti ship beam cannon. They also have head lasers. VF 4 was completely outfitted with beam weapons as it main cannons. Even the VF 17 had beam weapon. So you're wrong, the reason they use projectile, are vast. First, their techs allow it to be powerful enough to penetrate energy converting armor, thus with fast firing rate and power, which is ideal.

@yepdrinker Then let me ask you this if they had beam weapons then why aren't they using it? They took stupid pills? Most likely cause they don't have them. Just cause the other ships from the other Macross shows have them doesn't necessarily mean they also have them in this show. Each expedition have their own president and each president have different ways of doing things and Frontier obviously has serious lack of weaponry that's why they contract SMS in the first place.

@bertkore Did you just read my explanation? They only used Beam weapons after ECA rounds fail to penetrate the vajira. And no SMS did not use beam weapon against the vajira initially, and still didn't, they use ECA round with fold quartz particles inside them along with beam weapon. YOU want to know why? BEcause it has a faster firing rate then a beam weapon, which is essential during high speed combat. You need to fire faster than your enemy! Lack of weaponry my ass.

another point is that each expedition make up of different fleet configuration, but their is no indication of lack of weaponry, SMS is a mercenary group, cheap to use. Later SMS is part of the military under law. SMS has one ship with several VF25 that is using a gunpod. GUNPOD using ECA round which is not beam if you hadn't notice. As you can see Frontier has several hundred of ship with fighters. Beam weapon is an option pack that can be use later if they want as seen with EX 171.

@yepdrinker Also I may add it wasn't just any beam weapon they used against the Vajira, it was a heavy quantum beam weapon. An ordinary one wouldn't have work against the vajira as seen with Vf25 ozma firing his head laser (beam). Eventually they would adapted to all weapon including The quantum beam weapon. Like I said they prefer faster fire rate of a gunpod to a energy hungry beam gun. Which both is just as powerful, but obliviously not against the Vajira who can adapt to any form weapon.

Did you know Ozma super pack carries anti ship cannon? Did you not know that the Queadluun rau primary carries beam weapon? As you can see they did jack to the vajira, until Brera uses his Heavy Quantum Beam gunpod. My point was they got plenty of weapon including beam weapons which you like so much.

Ordinary beam just don't work until they use a heavy quantum beam, and even that will be adapted by the Vajira. @tmoore2010 Because it's in the future, doesn't mean projectile and solid weapons became less useful. In Macross they manage to make projectiles powerful enough to penetrate ECA armor Valkyrie. They also have electromanetic guns like the sniper gun Michael uses. Even the knives has pin point barrier that allow them to cut through anything. Does a beam weapon firing rate equal that of machine gun. If machine gun has the power equal to that of a beam weapon which would u choose?

For the first time in Macross history, the RMS-1 Reaction missile failed. But that caused Macross(Quarter and Fronter) to use thier most powerful attack -Macross Cannon!
