HE WAS AN OK SINGER. I AM SORRY TO OFFEND ANY ONE. BUT EVERY TIME I COMPARE HIS VOICE WITH THE GREAT MOHAMMED RAFI OF INDIA IT BECOMES OBVIOUS THAT HE WASNT EVEN TEN PERCENT OF RAFI. MOHAMED RAFI SAHAB THATS THE NAME THAT BROUGHT SOUNDS OF HEAVENS TO EARTH
i have heard different stories about him from the members of his own family. i have also heard, first hand mind you, stories from people in Kharabad that they used to make him drink and drink and drink (Not Orange juice if you catch my drift) hoping they could get something out of him that way, but to no avail As you can see, we both heard different stories. As far as him being jealous, everybody knew that back home. so that was not hush hush. By the way, the same critique goes to Ustad Hashim
Ustad did actually teach many people just to name a few (his son Eltaf, Alim Sai, Khatam, Naim Nazary, Sharif Ghazal, and many more in India including Jagdish P. He also conducted over 300 educational radio sessions on classical music. If that's not teaching, I don't know what is. He was a great man and well aware of his capabilities. There was really no one in Afghanistan or India for him to be jealous of. Don't know about Ustad Hashim though.
No one is questioning Ustad's talent, his impeccable achievement, his innovation and accomplishments. The question that no one dares to ask is why he did not pass his knowledge to others including members of his own family. Imagine if he opened up an academy when he returned from India and really started to teach others from the bottom of his heart. imagine how many Ustads we would have had by now. Alas..... it is almost taboo to even talk about things like that.... He was a very jealous man.
he went through 15 years of guru-shish parampara, which is the traditional and the right way to learn. Learning classical music takes more than just a few lessons. In Afghanistan, there was no one who would go through what he went through to learn, so that's why he could not pass on his music. However, if you recall he used to have radio session explaining/ demonstrating different elements of ICM. That's proof that he did what he could but people were just no into it.
He also tried teaching many other singers. One example is Hamahang. However Hamahang gave up within six months becuase be could not do it. See ICM is like a 500 pound rock. If you train properly, you can eventually pick it up and make it look very easy. Those who think they can and try to lift the 500lb. rock will seriously hurt themselves and look stupid.
it's not always easy for the best performers to be the best teachers. even if you look at other major classical stars of india, not many of them have been the best teachers.
Sometimes great performers are poor teachers. There are many big names in classical music in India who were terrible at grooming students. I guess they spend too much time on their own practice and performance careers to be attentive the the needs of students. They have to make a living of their music after all. I'm sure if the govt. of Afghanistan could have set up an academy that gave the Ustad a livelihood from teaching, things might have turned out differently.
Many people in Afghanistan did not appreciate Ustad Jan in his time as his music was way ahead of its time, as it is now....But the fact that there are so many recordings of him is a blessing. So that we can inshallah build our selves up to trying to appreciate the amazing different aspects of Ustads god given talents....Peace
@zrahin every afghan have to love him and his music, he is a legend over legends. 20 medals and more than 30 music titles from 4 different countries. you can only respect this gay.. the big Ustad R.I.P
