  • i personally like little tony roxter junior when he was 11. He had such a natural motion feelin he lost these days in my opinion. He was a lot more fun to watch. CHECK THE VIDEO HE PLAYS WITH JOJO!!!!!!!!!!!!

    JOJO? : GOD

  • It is similar to meditation. Avoid all thoughts and focus on counting and relaxation. Once a thought enters your mind, start over! It's all in practice when it comes to meditating.

Same with discipline on the drums- You can apply similar concepts!

  • christ Jojo Mayer is a monster when it comes to drums.

  • Surprisingly simple for Jojo. This must have been just for fun on the side or something because it's not that complicated. Most good drummers could play this after a good amount of practice. Usually Jojo plays stuff that appears logically impossible but this seems to be the simplest thing I've ever seen him play, though he played it very well too.

  • FUCK! is all i can say to that.

  • No one plays like him because no one else can. Just as no one else can play like Vinnie, or Dennis, or Keith Carlock. They just end up sounding like clones or watered down version of guys with such a distinctive style.

  • Yep. Tony Royster Jr. just sounds like a watered-down Dennis.

  • What I want to know is how to develop personal creativity/playing with respectable efficiency so I don't end up sounded like a watered down influence.

  • the best way to do that would be to learn all different genres of music and to study all the best drummers in those genres. so you can pick up characteristics of all the best drummers but since theres so many all mixed together in the style you create, itll be hard to identify just one. and JOJO RULES!

  • You won't if you listen to enough music.

  • Make your "play" practice (we all do it) useful by MENTALLY keeping track of every lick you use. If you use a certain lick, think to yourself "I used that lick: and don't use it again! It's a challenge once you have gone through a library of licks, and that is when you are done!

THen afterwards, work on new licks! Build that library BUT DONT USE THE SAME LICK TWICE WHILE PRACTICING.

This is good discipline and one of my main teaching methods/angles.

  • thats what she said haaaaaaaaaaa. jojos audience needs new camera uhhh quality=crap

  • Jojo Mayer changed the state of modern drumming, seemingly by himself. Amazing!

  • I don't get it. No one else drums like him, how could he have changed the state of modern drumming?

  • Easy. Other drummers like Johnny Rabb tried to bring DnB to the mainstream but did not have the authenticity of sound. Jojo sounds like a sample with a human touch. He also understood the music enough to bring its culture into the mainstream drumming community (modern drummer mag) and was thoroughly embraced. Although not the first to embrace the DnB style, Jojo took his prodigy background on the drums and immersed his whole focus into this new style. So far he stands alone as (the) innovator.

  • Point well taken, but I still doubt that this type of music will make it mainstream for a few reasons.

1.) If it does, it'd be all sampled, because it takes too much skill for most musicians to do.

2.) The other elements of DnB aren't that strong, it can get very repetitive and although mainstream usually is repetitive, DnB will never catch on.

I'm glad I finally have someone with good musical views to argue with on youtube :P.

  • Both points are well noted, but DnB has already been integrated into pop culture in a toned down form. (think coffee commercial filler) Squarepusher would never be used for selling toothpaste. What this style asks musicians like Jojo to do is akin to what Indian musicians do with the Raga form. The raga is like a canon with three parts that cycle to form the structure which the musicians can improvise in. The question becomes, can people compose pieces that go beyond dance loops to stretch DnB.

  • You are correct. Most drummers will never reach the level needed to play what jojo is doing. Think of how long it takes just to play brushes well, or funk, then add a whole new and somewhat uncharted approach to playing the kit and its asking a lot. In case it was not stated before, Squarepusher is the quintessential musician for this music. He is a composer, multi instrumentalist, producer, and visionary. What would be really exciting is to have Jojo and Squarepusher (tom/bass)have a duet.

  • ''It takes too much skill for most musicians to do''.Wow that was a fucking sweeping statement.

  • You need to buy more albums.

  • ahaa i was the guy in yellow. :D That was a great day :)

  • i was there, he was amazing!!! especially how he approaches drumming and music.
