I have seen something similar back in the late 60's early 70's.
Was for a much larger cable driven industrial robot arm using saucer shaped hollow metal spheres to provide rigidity up the centre with cables for tension only (rather than stiffness too as shown here).
The flexible cable manipulator is a novel touch but again not new.
This looks like the kind of thing Tony Stark (Iron Man) would have ;)
