This song is my favorite. At any time in my life I can still remember what it felt like the first time I heard it and how fucking unbelievably true it rang for me. I love Say Anything's other stuff but this song will always be the song with the best lyrics in my opinion.

a more likely explanation for this songs meaning has been hinted at before on this video and i tend to side with it. I believe this is a song devoted to Max's past with Bipolar Disorder (ie: Red Cat/ Yellow Cat conflict as a metaphor for his two personalities clashing)

Freestyle stuff is pretty cool when they haven't planned "lyrics", and takes talent, but it's not really any more music than a retard bashing pots and pans with a spoon is music. First Verse - Racism/human conflict. More likely racism. Second verse - Cultural exploits/stubborness to change/complacency. Third verse - human need for interaction/mental instability. Fourth Verse- need for love. Fifth/final verse - (see @dinosauring's comment above) and complacency again. Well, that's my interpretation. Hope it brings a little insight into this amazing song.

I sort of see how this song could be considered metaphoric, but I think the music video blatantly gives away the meaning of the song - it's about how diverse people can become friends, and ultimately just not to question it ('these are my friends, this is how we stay'
I personally do know a 'yellow cat and a red cat', a guy who wants to see someone he respects without their clothes, an obsessive compulsive rambler, and I really don't feel the need to question my friendships with these people.

I see how this is interpreted as a metaphor for racism, and it very well could be, but for some reason that's not how I think of it. I think of the first verse as an attempt to communicate the futility of life, so to speak. For example, say two parties are arguing with fervor about a relatively meaningless topic. They are so adamant to defend their side in this "war", however they don't see how pointless it is. Hence, "A cat is just a cat." Nothing more than a cat. ...just my thoughts.
