I think the correct term for "hjemmeværnet" would be national guard.

Actually, I HJV translates it to Home Guard, and the national guard of the US isn't like the HJV of Denmark. Then on the other hand, US Home Guard is a computer program in development, or so I heard. I guess you just can't translate what they don't have.
