Michael Albert, the other guy Chavez introduces in this video is also a fake anarchist who uncritically supports the Chavez regime. In "Venezuela: Revolution as Spectacle" Rafael Uzcategui describes meeting Albert on this same trip in 2009. This arrogant american intellectual lectured a group of Anarchists on what was happening in their own country, saying it was revolutionary and refusing to listen to their counterarguments. Chomsky has betrayed anarchism, libertarianism and anti-capitalism by supporting this military authoritarian populist quasi-dictator who, far from "nationalising the oil industry" has actually allowed more private multinational corporations to profit from venezuela's oil, at the expense of indigenous people's rights, the autonomy of social movements and the environment.

Their uncritical support for an authoritarian demagogue is just one more example of what we already know (or at least should know). We can't depend on leaders or heroes or great thinkers to save us from our problems, and every time we have, it has led to disaster. Popular movements and solidarity are the only things that work.

Amigo, soy venezolano, y nuestro país tiene los mismos problemas que en 1998, pero peores. Chávez es un magnífico orador, dice cosas maravillosas, pero eso es todo lo que ha hecho en 11 años de gobierno, hablar, cambiar nombres, leyes, y adquirir cada vez más poder para mantenerse.

Educación, economía, salud, seguridad, vialidad... todas son cosas deficientes e inatendidas en este país. Chávez es un maestro de la ilusión, sobre todo hacia otros países.

Chávez talks wonderfully, and that's all that he's been doing since 11 years. Talk.

The country has the same (but worsened) problems from 1998: corruption, extremely high crime rate, unattended health system, mediocre education, disorder and inefficiency, poor economy, etc.

It's easy to sympathize with Chávez when you listen to his anti-imperalist talk (specially from another country). But inner reality of my country, Venezuela, is regrettable. This is no "revolution" in any way.

Qué triste. Ya ni sabe en donde está parado Chomsky. Se ve hasta un poco señil, como McCain durante la campaña. En las decadas que vengan, este tipo de actos será recordado con el mismo desdén que se recuerda la jaladera de bola que Sarte le hizo a la Unión Sovietica, por ejemplo. Nunca se ha visto un tirano que algún intelectual de "izquierda" no idolatre. Es que me encantaría ver a Chomsky expresandose en una USA con leyes mediáticas chavistas...sería el primero en chillar.
