“Well, this one goes back even further than that one(Part of the Plan. It actually dates back to the(early dawn of time?) I was actually going to mention this song.I wrote it here in Peoria on(my mother’s?)piano. I was about 17/18 years old. I can still see the day on that morning that I wrote this song,it was a lovely Sunday, I was looking out through the Venetian Blinds. I think when I wrote this, it convinced me that this was what I would do for a living? I always thought I would do, piano(?)”
I haven't seen this video until now. I'm speechless. Dan's performance is outstanding, especially knowing he was ONLY 17 when he wrote it! "Genius" seems a mediocre, generic attempt at defining this man's talent. Those of us who have known Dan's music throughout our lives have been blessed. "To the Morning" is even more meaningful after hearing Dan's rendition of, "Birds"..., with the haunting final chord; the 'other bookend', the end of his music....
can anyone please tell me what he is saying before the song? i'd really would appreciate it...one of his best songs, in my opinion...right up there with passage and gambler...let it shine...thanks, mary
@ceresmary206 I have listened so many times trying to see if I could understand everything he says prior to performing this. Same as with you, I just can't understand what Dan is saying. Sorry.
This is still my favorite song Dan ever wrote. It's a view of a crisp, new day, maybe a cup of coffee, with birds, and hope, and so inviting!!! It makes mornings amazing.... Like Dan is... miss him so much!!
I saw Dan in concert at Wolf Trap in 2004. It was a couple years after that that he left us behind. I will cherish that concert with all I am. I was due to have an angiogram the next day because the doctor's thought I was getting ready to check out of this world. I never thought that Dan would check out before me. I too have been playing guitar for about 40 years and Mr. Fogelberg was a huge influence on me and my friends. I was also teased about listening to t"that kind of music" as well.
Living in chronic pain often gives way to depression and I often can't wait til the night comes. Mornings just made me have to wake up to pain and endless crying Thank you Dan, for helping me to see the beauty in a morning again.
In reading all the comments I realize that we all really loved this man and his music.I have played guitar now for 36 or so years and Dan was one of my earliest influences and still remains my favorite. The beauty of his music has touched my soul deeper than any other artist has.I am so glad that you also realize what a wonderful talent he is and I feel the community in the sadness of his, and our loss.Someone here mentioned bittersweet I think that is the exact word.So much beauty in song.
This is one superb tune, among the many written by Dan. This is the first time I've heard it live. I am now 37, my friends back then used to kidd me about listening to "that kind of music." It really goes to show you what the classics are. And this man definitely made them. Dan, you are missed. You are up in heaven, with my late father, Charles Kocsis 3-26-96, singing, taking nature walks, and having a beer. Jen Kocsis.
can someone please clean up the sound on this. It's magnificent but man it needs it. Beter than the studio recording but so muffled. Anyone out there know how to do this? Wish I could I could.
Can someone please clean up the sound on this. It would be magnificent. You can't even hear what he says before he sings. And the vocal on this is SO, SO good even better than the recording. Sure wish I knew how to do it.
Had to come & listen to this before going to bed. "......And it's going to be a day there is really no way to say no to the morning Yes it's going to be a day there is really nothing left to say but come on morning..." And as the sun breaks I'll lay down with these beautiful words running through my mind from a man I so admired and will always miss...........
Thank you for posting this! Talk about going back in time with this song. What a wonderful performance Dan did here of "To The Morning", still in that high, clear, beautiful, moving voice of his. So many other fans of Dan Fogelberg's here; yet, when I mentioned him to people in the '70s, '80s, they had never heard of him. Most I know only recognize who I'm speaking of when I mention "Leader of the Band" or "Old Lang Syne". It's wonderful to know he was appreciated, loved; now missed by us all.
to SoothesMYSoul-8 months ago--I, too- am so happy that I "found" Dan's music so long ago and didnt just listen to his"hits"Those of us who dug deeper are the luckiest! Its his body of work that make me awed by his talents- still I cannot pick a favorite-almost all of his songs are THAT GREAT to be a favorite!Dan's music has been a significant part of my life andmade it so much richer!! No other artist has, or I doubt will--be as great to me as Dan. God Bless him--he is so very much missed.
caseyk928, you are so, so right. As far as a true "favorite" song of Dan's, as you, I cannot pick. I love all of Dan's music~how do you pick just 1 song of his to top all others? For me it's impossible. No musician will ever replace Dan for me. All who know what I'm trying to say "get it" ~ you either do, or you don't... I can tell that you understand, as do so many, many others. Thank you again pre10der76 for this clip of Dan singing this beautiful song. All you share of Dan is so appreciated.
This is the Song of Dan's got me hooked on his music- the first song I ever heard- I was a 17 year old freshman in College- still go to sleep to it- I am 50 now
Below is what I hear Dan saying....

I was at this concert. Hard to believe it would be the last time I'd see him live. Still fall to sleep to his music after all these years.
