  • where do you find these

  • That's a very hard fish to breed considering u need to breed a molly w swordtail then lyre w swordtail and lastly the two hybrids

  • @GhillieSniper115 Mollies and swordtails can not interbreed. They are from two different genus. Swordtails and platies can interbreed though. As far as the hobby goes I would consider any common tank-strain of swordtail or platy as a hybrid since its unlikely that they are any particular true species. That is unless you are dealing with wild-type fishes. But for the ones you see at petsmart a vast amount of them are hybrids really. Not 50/50 hybrids but 90/10.

  • gorgeous :3

  • I bought a lyertail fish once, it's tail is longer than this one, when it swims it looks like a phoenix.

  • she's beautiful

  • wow! Gimmy!

  • holy crap look at the dorsal finnage

  • I had one...=(( i miss them...=(((((

  • Awsome $60 schooling fish lawl

  • Badass fish I saw one like that at my fish store and idk if should buy it do you recommend it?

  • is she a blood red hi-fin lyretail female... wow how can i get a pair the these

  • wow.. nice... how cud i get one like this

  • nice felmale Swordtail :P

  • most wonderful fish ever seen

  • i had them before and they turned out to be quite aggressive with my platies.

  • hey i have two of that kinda fish with lyertail and sailfin but i cant tell which 1 is male or female.

  • geee thanks

  • this is a male

  • @Srinivazen1 Its actually a female, the lyertails can be confusing sometimes. She has a long anal fin, but it is still fan shaped like a females should be. Males of this type have a long feathery anal fin.

  • I like the way that fish looks

  • i have never seen a swordtail like this .. it s beautifull ...do you still have her ?

  • as beautiful as betta

  • SUPER FISH !!!!!

  • THATS SOME SWORDTAIL! either that or a badly behaved Betta. are you sure its not a Betta?

  • do they get along with Fire belly toads and african dwarf frogs and other fishand snails fresh water

  • beauty

  • did you ever breed it?

  • you over fed that pretty fish

  • where did u get the fish at? I can't find them anywhere in Oregon.

  • soooo beautiful

  • It does absolutely NOT look like a betta!

    Something with ur eyes dude?

  • yeah i thought it was a siamese fighter at first, nice

  • i have one of those.. except mine has her tail sperated in 3 ways a bit more that your , she also has red eyes.. abot the crossing molly with a sord tali i don;t know ... but i have in my tank tow crossing from platy with sord tail.. so.. :)

  • For two different species to cross they need to have the same genus name (first name). There are very very few case where this rule is not upheld.

    Xiphophorus maculatus- platy

    Poecilia sphenops - Molly

    Xiphophorus helleri- swordtail

    Poecilia reticulata- guppy

It is not uncommon to get a platy/swordtail hybrid or a molly/guppy hybrid. It is impossible to get a swordtail/molly hybrid or a swordtail/guppy hybrid same crosses would be impossible for a platy as well.

  • What a beautiful girl you've got there! Where in the world did you get her!? =)

  • thats looks BADAASSSS

  • no se que es

    ?

  • thats a very nice hifin (sailfin actually) lyretail blood velvet female swordtail. very nice except that you feed it too much....

  • THAT FISH IS SO PRITTY!

  • That is what we called "Overfeeding".

  • very beautiful specimen.. u are luck to have her..

  • naaalala ko noong bata ako nakakapag breed ako ng red sword tail pero ngayon wala ng panahon dahil busy ako

  • firstly that is not a sword tail secondly u didnt even buy a sword tail thirdly thats a betta splended fourthly ur a durr brain

  • LOL! The fish is 100% a female swordtail. I don't keep bettas. Both fish may have long fins, but the body shape and placement of the fins easily gives it away. If you knew fish that would be clearly obvious.

  • lol! i breed bettas and theres no way in hell ill i dentify that as a betta. aint no betta and you aint got a brain dude.

nice ST dude i like the body it looks so fit unlike those sold in pet shops lol hehe! but then again i know nothing on ST but thats a beauty

  • are they anyone here in barbados with the bloodred swordtail?

  • beautiful

  • peccato per le machie nere comunquie una bellisima

  • Wow! great find. :)

I'd wanna see some fry from her!

I wanted to buy some black veiltail xiphos once, but they were expensive for my pocket so I gave up.

Next time I will go there I will def buy a female! They were some of the most beautiful fish I've ever seen!

  • I heard this are expensive. how mush you payd for this?

  • I paid like $7 for her. She looked like a normal lyertail when I bought her, I figured something was up when her fins wouldn't stop growing LOL.

Swords like her are generally inexpensive. The expensive ones are the swords that only have really long dorsal fins, since they can breed. Swords like her cannot physically reproduce.

  • Oh well. nice fish anyway. hope she's doing ok.

  • I have been looking for this one for a long time!!! I had some but had velvet.

  • beautiful red color

  • looks like a betta

  • haha i think so too it looks like a betta

  • thats a red velvet right there...

  • great fish

  • get some plants in there. that aquarium looks like crap.

  • LOL. Its a quarintine tank in my closet, making it look nice would be a waste of money. IMO it looks quite good in the video, right now it looks a whole lot crappier.=)

  • Nice blood swordtail. It's generally a good idea not to add more food than the fish eats at once so it doesn't dirty the water. Add a couple of flakes, and if it eats those, add more.

  • What a most fantastic fish.

Question - I´ve noticed that many/most? U.S aquariums don´t have any gravel stones at the bottom. Why´s that?

Every home aquarium I have seen in Europe up until now always has.

  • It's called a bare bottom tank, gravel isn't needed in most tanks, but most people prefer it for looks. I prefer gravel but, it requires cleaning and it's much easier to keep a tank clean without it. This being my quarantine tank I skipped on the gravel, but all my other tanks have it.

  • is she aggressive? mine sure is!

  • I'm not sure if this one was aggressive, but the one I have currently (in the other video) is. Most of my female swords are aggressive! They drive me crazy, it's my males that are nice.

  • that looks like a mollie to me??

  • looks so stressed out.

  • nice swordtail were you get it from

  • thats a really pretty fish

  • OMG, isn't that a betta? 0.o

  • thats def. a swordtail! not a betta, similar looking i would say, but this is swordtail for sure

  • Yeah he is dummdo and yes it is. i got a new bread of sword tail its half speakled mollie half sword tail and they are selling 1,00,000,000 each week!!!!!!! =) they r really cool coz they eat algy like the mollies do

  • Sure thing...... You do know that crossing a molly (Poecilia sp.) with a swordtail (Xiphophorus sp.). is as impossible as crossing a cat and a dog. Basic high school.

  • @mikaila31 what about the cross between the Red tailed catfish RTC and the Tiger shovel nose cat there is only one species in the genus Phractocephalus and that is the RTC however this species interbreeds with the tiger shovel nose in the genus Pseudoplatystoma. this is due to the introduction of hormones. the only thing necessary for species to breed is the same or close chromosomal number. different chromosomal numbers will result in either genetic abnormalities or infertile offspring this is

  • @nicofish1000 a post mating barrier in some species it can result in the formation of new species. this was observed by peter and rosemary grant when they studied Darwin's finches in the Galapagos. its basic high school man im in 9th grade. mocking other people is not nice

  • @nicofish1000 yes I am aware their are viable deviations and that chromosome numbers play a bigger role then taxonomy. Just as far as most care, I find it easier to explain it by saying species of the same genus MAY cross breed. I know their are exceptions. But this generalization holds true most of the time.

  • @mikaila31 on this I agree with you. i feel like we would get along in real life we both enjoy arguing and using big words .... either way nice fish. do you keep it in slightly brackish water cause apparently guppies are sensitive to water conditions and salt would keep the bacteria down. this summer I am going to buy a 75 gal get some guppies assorted tetras a my raphy cats that I have and some dwarf cichlids. Im hoping this will work I know the other fish will mix but I am unsure about guppies

  • @nicofish1000 due to their apparent sensitivities I had a friend who used to breed them and apparently he used methyl blue to treat them. what do you use?

  • @nicofish1000 I don't keep this kind of fish anymore. I liked keeping fancy swords, but like you said they are sensitive. Mine stayed healthy when kept in a bare bottom tank like in the vid. Their health degraded every time I tried them in a community setup. I don't feel fish should need meds to stay healthy. If I ever kept swords again it would be wild types. I have a dislike for man-made fish these days. Endlers are my only livebearers. Most my fish are nano.
