  • Try teaching your Border Collie that stupid Stoneforter

  • Somebody has to know stupid when they see it ...And call it what it is...in hopes you will notice..Not saying you are stupid ...but that trick is...its way below the dog....and you too..

  • Techno/Christmas music & a dam dog clicker....my nerves are shot just watching this....Border collies need no clickers.. they are the smartest of all dogs... omg...how can u stand that noise....& a stupid trick to boot....a dogs food and water bowl is sacred..leave them alone to eat and drink normally,,GOOD LORD!

  • @Stoneforter Clicker training has nothing to do with insulting a dog's intelligence. It merely makes the trainer's marker more precise than verbal markers typically are - if anything it benefits the trainer more than the dog. The dog could learn behaviors with or without clicker, it is true. And just because you think the trick is stupid doesn't mean you have to open your mouth and say it. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. This is a sacred rule. Dolt.

  • can yu record with it ?

  • Its amazing how high the capacity is for learning in border collies. And the best part is how much they enjoy it!

  • Dazzle is such a good dog! She's absolutely wonderful. She's better trained than me!

  • wow

  • My puppy (australian sheherd) did this ever since we got her, not with commands, she just blew bubbles... :)

  • I love how you've got a video of Dazzle learning the trick. It's amazing to see how quick she processes and thinks about what you want her to do!

  • is there anything your dog cant do!?!?!

  • Wow, you can see her think and progress by the seconds, amazing! And you're doing great with the clicker, which is a must for it all to work, I love the idea of throwing the treat into the water and rewarding her for dunking her snout! What a team! =)

  • just wanted to tell you, you are amazing, and that dog is incredibly, INCREDIBLY smart. i mean, the dog learned faster that i would have,

  • If he does well then click .. right?

  • How did you associate the command with the action? Please reply : )

  • Heeey.. Do You Think Border Collie are the best dogz for kids?

  • I got all dewy-eyed watching Dazzle, seeing how her brain works to solve the puzzle: I wonder what does my human mean this time? She's so smart. How do I miss my border collie, not that I ever was this clever communicating with him... Love border collies. The best breed in the whole world. Some day I'll have time to own another one.

  • A masterful demonstration of shaping!! Bravo!

  • I dont know why but this made me cry with laughter, fantastic, thanks for sharing x x

  • so cute.. i like the way it looks at you.. like a human :D

  • too cute!!

  • Sorry, i realize that this will sound ver novice and stupid; but by teaching with the clicker can you still use commands. I'm sooo excited, i am getting a border collie puppy named Kira in a few days. I cant wait, you and Dazzle have inspired me to teach her tons of tricks. Thanks, please answer. BYE

  • OMG! it´s really good trick!

  • i have a border collie his name is tucker your dog is good at trick

  • I think that was one of the most fascinating YouTube videos I've ever watched. I loved Dazzle's expression, and watching her figure out the puzzle with the help of your excellent timing was awesome! Oh to be that good some day. Are there any books or resources you recommend to learn about clicker training?

  • hey does a dog need to like water to learn this trick?

  • is this how long it took dazzle to learn this trick? anyway..5 stars. i <3 dazzle!

  • Dazzle is extremely smart :o It's like she knows exactly what you want and does it, amazing! :D Subbed and Liked. =] Keep it up!

  • really want a puppy...and for her to do this

  • yeah, I was wondering how you teach a dog that. Thanks! I'll start working on it when I get back! Great Job both of you!!

  • Where sing this song merry christmas???

  • She's so cute <3

That dog is so nice :)

  • wow .... so nice , she learn to fast !!!

  • border collie are the best dogz <3 xx

  • Excellent !!

    - Now that's what you call a dog trainer!

You make it look so easy, Dazzle looks like she had fun learning this!

  • holy crap!!! nice!! im just not going to teach my dog how to do that because were in public alot and i dont wana e embarised by him blowing bubbles in his water lol!

  • AHH-MAZING

  • He's amazing! I love how border collies all share some of the facial expressions, even though they all are individuals... When Dazzle dunks his nose in the water, not completely sure what he's supposed to do, his head stays in place but his eyes move upwards like saying "now what?" I love the concentration and the effort he puts in trying to understand. Border collies are amazing dogs. They can be difficult, impossible even, but in right hands they excel. Like Dazzle.

    I do miss mine...

  • Then after a while he put his nose closer and closer of the deep bowl, until when he put he mouth on it, then I would Yes him and treat. Kept going. With the treat at the bottom of the bowl he will now dip his nose in a tiny bit and have bubbles I am super happy when he does it. He doesn't quite get it without the treat (yet) and will only put his nose in a little. Should I keep at this method and re-inforce it? Or should I go back and try the target method like Chaos? Might make water warmer!

  • Hey again!! Ok, really wasn't working, developed a strong nose in bowl with no water, he wasn't touching but it was deep and he kept it there. I then put in the tiniest amount of water and all he would do was drink it! The more I put it the more he would drink it. The annoying thing was he would keep his head over it like he thought the water was the bottom! :P Tried putting treats at the bottom of a deep bowl. He'd ignore them or paw at them! So I ended on a good note with the empty bowl.......

  • we are stuck on the stage where there is a little water in the bowl and he will only lick it. I then increase water in bowl after the interaction is solid but he will still on lick it or keep his nose just above it. When Dazzle gets the idea, you drop the treat in the bowl for re-inforcement and when she goes in to get it it kinda clicks with her. When I drop the treat in for Dermott he tries to get it by licking it or ignoring it. :P Help? xxx

  • @Ella4Blu Hmmm, here are a couple things you could try:

Firstly, with no water does he press his nose to the bottom and hold it there? If so, try adding literally a drop of water at a time and work on maintaining that nose-touch. With Dazzle, I was able to pour more water in and work from there, but Dermott might need smaller, more progressive steps to keep from licking. With small increases in water, he may have an easier time understanding that you want his nose in the bottom of the bowl.

  • @Ella4Blu

Second, what if you put a lot more water in (fill the bowl) & then drop the treat in (so the treat is out of his tongue's reach)? Perhaps for a very high-value treat (e.g. hot dogs) he would dip his nose slightly & you could reward for that & then progress from there.

You said he starts to ignore it, so this might not work for him. If he stops working with you & trying to get the treat, go back & make it simpler for him & keep his motivation up, then maybe progress differently.

  • omg lol hw do u teach her this stuff tell me!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow !

  • really awesome video! I am going to try with paige! you didnt talk, but you displayed how to teach the trick perfectly! Thank you!!

  • omg u have a very clever girl with ya, and u are great trainer too haha good job both of ya :D

  • That's awesome! I'm inspired too.

  • Hey, Dazzle is on youtube! :)

I don't quite get this trick and I also don't think that my dog would, either (she doesn't understand shaping, like, at all), but it's fun to watch

Nothing on youtube compares to watching Dazzle in person, though!

  • SHE IS WONDERFUL :D

  • That's some great training right there.

You have awesome timing, which probably is key to great training!!!

    Awesome

  • in the background on the 3 or 4th song it sounds like TSO Carol Of The Bells

  • Hey great job on the training!!! I got my 4 month old border collie puppy to learn that trick and now she knows it!! :) I learnt it a month ago and she now has it down pat... She in 5 1/2 Months old right know and knows so many tricks already!!! Good job on traing Dazzle

  • how old is your dog :D it is very cute and that shulled I never make a dog do.

5/5 for that nice job :D

  • Very cute girl and neat trick :)

Just a question - I can see you are shaping/treating her progressively. When did you add the cue though?

Obviously you say 'bubbles' in the last sequence and Dazzle knows? Do you just start saying 'Bubbles' as she is already doing it and then say it earlier and earlier? Please explain.

  • You got it!

Once the behaviour is consistent and she is doing what I want reliably, that's when I add the cue.

Like you said, I start by having her do the behaviour and then say the cue. Then with more repetitions I progressively move the cue earlier and earlier. Once the cue is consistent, I no longer reward the behaviour when I don't ask for it - that solidifies the cue. :)

  • Thanks for the explanation and tip :) Good luck with your training and Dazzle, she is great!

  • @KatsDogs Awesome :D I was wondering the same thing as BambooGrrl lol. With my dog I was saying the cue earlier and earlier but I guess now the thing to do is ignore him if I don't ask?

  • you are a great clicker trainer! very impressive range of tricks

  • Don't forget, a smart dog takes a GIFTED TRAINER, too! :)

  • Aw shucks... :)

Didn't you show this to some students? Or tell them about it maybe? I thought that was you...did anyone get a dog to blow bubbles??

  • Yes, that was me...to try to get them jazzed about shaping! I haven't heard that anyone tried bubbles...I keep meaning to try it with little Poe.

  • Dazzle seems to be really operant! Don't you just love free shaping, it's easy to become addicted to!

  • What type of treats do you buy? All of the ones I have found are soo expencive! And they are much to big for a training treat. :) Thanx!

  • All my dogs will eat anything for a treat - no need to get super fancy. They will go crazy for kibble (which is what I used in this video) or I could use chicken, cheese, or whatever is in the fridge.

If/when I do buy treats, I always break them or cut them because they definitely are way to big to be given whole! (for training purposes I mean) And, obviously, the expensive ones last a lot longer if you cut them up. :)

  • Aww, so cute! Dazzle is an amazing dog! And hey, you've just inspired me to teach Cherry and Rusty (Rusty is an australian shepherd) to blow bubbles too!

  • lol omg thats so cool

  • Wow, what a smart dog. It is so entertaining to watch Dazzle and all her tricks. She is such a smart dog!

  • Freaking hilarious, and AWESOME!

  • Hey!! This video inspire me to try that whith Chelsea, my bc! I had soo mutch fun!! And yep, she learned to!! :) I uploaded the video, if you I like to see...

Congrats for the great job whith dazzle!!

  • Hehhe, amazing! Thank you very much for sharing this!

  • Hi,

I found this video yesterday and I think it's great! I immediately decided my Australian shepherd Ginny should know how to blow bubbles too :) I uploaded her video so you can take a look at it.

Keep up the good work with tricks and agility.

  • Hey Katherine,

I tried this with Chubbs but something isn't working.. He won't go get the kibble in the bol if I drop it in. He's been tought not to touch food even if it drops right by him. So I have to inch him on just to get 1 kibble out of the bol. Same thing happens when I add water in the bol. Can you think of any other ways that I can teach him??

Right now he's putting his nose in the bol and slightly touching the water, but he tents to drink it more then anything else??

    Let me know!

  • Dazzle is such a smart girl!! It was great to see the process of how you teach her a new trick too!

  • That is a pretty neat trick! I'm really impressed with how fast she learned that. Very cool and an adorable trick that I'm sure you're going to have fun with at parties. :P

  • Very impressive! It's fascinating to see the progression of the trick. Beautiful, and very smart, dog.

  • Haha, that's neat. Thanks for posting the whole process! Very impressive!

  • Thats so awesome! I am considering teaching my guy. Great job and thanks for including how you did it too! Way to go Dazzle.

  • That was pretty darn cool!!! Very imprssive indeed. You just gave me a new trick to teach my guy! Thanks! (I love that you sowed "how" you taught it as well.) Thanks!

  • Awesome! Dazzle is such a smartie! So cute to see her figuring it out!

  • i love this vid! It shows how you trained her, which helps! Good job!

  • that was soo cute!

  • so cool! totally gonna teach graci this! :)

  • great ive watched josies and now yours and weve gotten so far as to drink out of the bowl but different ways give me different insight this was a great one to watch to we will try it this way now to see if we can get any further

  • Wow she is amazing. I love watching her thought process. Were you giving her any hand signals or just letting her figure out what you wanted? She is soo smart! Now you need to make a video showing how to teach some of your other tricks!

  • I was just letting her figure it out on her own. :) I do give her feedback as to whether or not she is on the right track with my facial expressions but I don't actually tell her what to try.

  • hehe cool, thanks for posting this!! I taught my puppy it last night, so cute!! I'm going to make a video of it tonight.

  • lol thats so cool

  • Great job. 5* and a favorite!

  • Oh my goodness! Fast learner! I love seeing her thinking about it!

  • bite him!!!! GOOD GIRL!!!

  • did you all no this is not cute it is very harmful on your dogs the water is going in their nose doing harm to the poor dogs .now everyone is doing this its not right think before trying some of these things here on you tube the poor dog is breathing in water as it breaths out that what makes the bubbles but the poor pup is getting all the water suck up in his nose not cute at all

  • Actually, this trick isn't causing her any harm. Why? Because blowing bubbles is caused by releasing air under a liquid surface and we do it by "exhaling" underwater. That proves it right there but allow me to explain:

When mammals exhale their diaphragm relaxes, compressing the lungs. There is no "empty space" being created. The thoracic volume is actually being reduced proportionally to the amount of air being exhaled. Thus, exhaling underwater cannot cause you to take water into your lungs.

  • Oh yeah... that dog really looks abused.

    Get a life.

  • I love it! I'm gonna have to teach Tori this. I love the look on Dazzle's face...she's like "is this really what you want me to do?"

  • dazzling awesome!

  • Amazing!

  • I can't freakin' believe it!! What will you come up with next!!?? Where do you come up with these?? I have honestly never even used a clicker for any of Chubbs' tricks. I might have to start using it now because our tricks are getting more detailed now. I started teaching him to act injured (lift 1 paw).

    I'm catching up.. slowly! lol

  • haha that's awesome.. Good idea.

  • excellent job and excellent idea for decomposition !

  • Way to go Dazzle:)! And in only one training session too! It's fun to watch the learning process. You can just see those wheels truning with that intense concentration. 5 STARS!

    *Ashley & Kaine*
