  • can I just buy the heartworm medicine and give it to my dog she is 4 or do I have to go to the vet and get her tested first? the vet says I need to get a sample of her shit and then give it to them to test and THEN she get get the preventative but I don't understand why I can't just give it to her myself. they want to charge me all this money and I think they are just trying to rip me off, advice please!

  • @SicklesCell I know this comment is a year old and you probably aren't too concerned about this anymore. But, your dog cannot receive heartworm preventive without proof of a negative test result. Also, heartworm is tested by blood test - not fecal. You can't just buy the medication and give it to your dog because if your dog does happen to be positive for heartworm the preventative medication will be extremely damaging. It could even kill your dog. This is why you need a prescription.
