By the way gpjos, Hitler's fear of an American invasion kept many of his best Divisions tied up in France waiting for it instead of fighting the Russians. And another thought, German manufacturing was destroyed by massive daylight bombing by American planes at great loss to us which crippled their war machine. @gpjos I hate to pop your balloon but the only reason the other Allies could even fight was because we deprived our people to convert our factories to making armaments which we supplied to all of the allies. The Russians were getting huge amounts of supplies from us or they could not have stopped the Nazi war machine. Roosevelt started shipping before we got attacked under the guise of lend-lease. Can I just say to all Americans who go on about how it's because of America that the Allies won WWII: America didn't join the war until after a military base was attacked by a foreign government, and the American army wasn't the only one in the war, the Red Army (Stalin) defeated the Germans in Stalingrad before America even had a military presence on the continent.

You forget that America, along with Britain, and Canada, opened two more fronts, and severly did dammage to German logistics and supply. The Soviets may have defeated the Germans in Stalingrad, but the Germans still got to Stalingrad. And if the Germans couldnt defeat the Soviets on Soviet land, then they (germans) most likely wouldve defeated them on Nazi land. This is only if the US and Britain hadnt opened up the other two fronts.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that America's presence in the war was unnecessary, I'm just saying that it annoys me when Americans take all the credit for winning WWII and insult France for surrendering to Germany when America wasn't even fighting at the time. But I disagree about the Germans probably defeating the Soviets on Nazi land; the Red Army did in fact invade Germany in 1945, hence the whole East Germany thing. Hitler was defeated by a whole range of countries, not just America.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that, imo without D-Day, the Soviets would probably have defeated Germany, and perhaps pushed through to France where the French Communist Party may well have set up a puppet government. However that is all very hypothetical obviously. Germany was quite weak in 1945, as the British and Americans pushed through France and into Germany, many Germans surrendered as they'd be kinder to the German citizens than the Red Army.

The Russians on the other hand, were confronted with the last remaining might of the Nazis as they hated Communists much more than they hated America or Britain. Then the western forces and the Red Army met Berlin on either side and Hitler committed suicide etc etc. At the time, the Nazis were terribly weakened and as Germans started to hear of what had happened in concentration camps they began to question the Nazi Party and many Nazi officials began to flee the country.
