  • Just listening to Christina makes my voice hurt.

  • I watched this video around 11-12pm then later I found out Whitney died later that day :/ jeez. "The Voice" RIP

  • Hello. Someone help me. Im a singer. but i dont really think my technique is too great. I would love it if someone could help me by giving me tips and excercises that would help me in this area. I tried singing with a neutral larynx, but idk i find it really hard! help! the video talks about pulling your soft palate, like what is that? im pretty sure mariah didnt know she was doing that. lol. please help. sos. :))

  • Whats the barbara song in the beginning. My gawd that woman had a voice of gold back then

  • Sarah geronimo and all those girls from that talent show of which i dont wanna know the name are complete shit when they are singing

  • @russel26 Her larnyx is high, the end ^^

  • @XTINASDISCIPLE That has nothing to do with the video, jump off the building skank

  • @hprm33t That video was fake

  • Thanks for the video! I know nothing about vocal techniques, but it basically sounds like the singers are screaming when their larynx is high *cringes*.

  • will.i.am's face is Priceless!!! at the end!

  • Comment removed

  • I've tried neutralizing my larynx/apple sooo hard but it moves dramatically no matter what I do. Whether it be upper chest or falsetto it goes high.

  • Fergie foi a pior ! HAHA'

  • How do you do it?

  • 06:08 Mariah Carey "...and finally found my waaaaaay" my god that is wonderful! She has such a powerful yet relaxed technique and the whole time her eyes are open. We know this because she says "I SEE YOU UP THERE".lol She doesn't miss a note and simultaneously doesn't miss a fan way out in the audience somewhere having fun. A true virtuoso.

  • So we shouldn't even strain like those singers do?

  • Let's not be mean to Fergie. That just wasn't her day, she was obviously in serious pain and she passed out after that. /sarcasm That being said, this video is all around awesome.

  • how do you keep a neutral larynx ? OR teach yourself for that matter...

  • I LOLed so hard at the Fergie clip at the end. Made my day.

  • is it difficult to relax the vocal cords?? Maybe it's just me ^^;;

  • o.o wow, watching this really helps. I'm hoping to take vocal classes, i really want to sing (because I enjoy it, not as a career though) and I want to sing properly. But i feel like my voice does not sound normal :/ anyways, watching this helped me understand a bit better! Thanks *saves to fav*

  • It seems like Xtina wants to make a big tone so she pushes her larynx down like crazy

  • o my God Fergie in the end was awful... Willam i think also was shocked

  • I like J. Hudson but i think sometimes she forces her vocal folds very harshly and she strains, my opinion

  • sorry, i mean in that time, who hit the nigh note ? :D

  • when larynx goes up it sounds like yell LOL

would mind to tell me what title of the song which is sung by 06:54 ?

    thank you :)

  • thats vanessa amorosi at 06:54

  • I want to say just one thing: hearing the REAL pain in the voice of a singer (famous or not) is a great feeling that gives you a very strong link between you and the singer, cuz you can feel that pain and even see it in his body (or throat). So I prefer a raw and not standard voice. I like Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Janis Joplin, Etta James, John Legend, Adele, Bjork, etc... I son't like Beyonce, Stevie Wonder, and all of them with "nautral larynx" cause they're artificial.

  • @MenichiniOfficial Aretha Franklin is worse than Christina Aguilera, cause she uses proper singing technique (therefore is artificial) according to you. Your arguments are laughable.

''hearing the REAL pain in the voice of a singer'' There are up lifting songs as well where the singer should sound happy and cool, not in pain. How will Christina manage to deliver such a demanding song, when she strains, chockes, screams on simple mid melts ? #Dumbed

  • Christina Aguilera knows exactly what she's doing with her voice. And like she always said: "I never had a formal vocal lessons program, but I prefer to have a natural raw voice than a built one" -.- And I like voices like her (Alicia Keys is another one for example!)

  • @MenichiniOfficial If you actually listen to Xtina singing when she was about 6 years old, she lowers her larynx to make a big tone and she's been doing it until now. Her tone is forced and unatural. She almost strains on high notes reuslting of a high larynx. So her technique is bad

  • @babylovemeonemoretim - No. She knows what she's doing while she's singing, and she's even PROUD to have a raw voice. She said this in A LOT of interview and diaries, so she knows exactly what she wants from her voice, and she's not focused on strain or clean voice, but she's focused on tone and intensity, cause her personal way to strain and suffer is the expression of her soul. So, please, let people do what they want to do without say if its bad or good. It's just a choice.

  • @MenichiniOfficial That's what you think. She thinks that raspiness in her voice is soulful but many people don't find it appealing.Christina darkens her voice to make a big tone and strains like hell on the upper belt. You can hear her lack of breath support and she's never been able to hit a F5 with ease. She sings out of tune because her throat closes and her larynx goes up. I don't want to discuss about good or bad but I get annoyed with her stans who always trump her as the best voice ever

  • @babylovemeonemoretim - You can talk how much you want about tecnique and other tips... the fact is that she has a GREAT vocality that expresses her personality. I really LOVE her strained voice and the fact that she's imperfect. She's around the block from a lot of time, and if she really doesn't fit well in her voice she could change it soon, but she likes her voice and the feeling that she gives to her audience. So this is the ONLY thing that matters. The rest is just taste.

  • @MenichiniOfficial Well, although I don't like Xtina's stans, I still like the way you talk. Seriously. Actually. I want to say about technique because many X's stans always talk and brag about it for many times, you know it? She's imperfect and that's the truth.

  • Comment removed

  • @babylovemeonemoretim I know that it's important to say to everybody that some singing attitudes are good fore someone and not for every one. When I listen to an imperfect singing voice I can hear the same problems even in the speaking one. In the case of Xtina no one can find problems in her speak cuz her singing is "not thought", but her speak is perfect and balanced. She has a natural coordination between air flow and chord closure, but when she sings she just istinctively doesn't use it.

  • @babylovemeonemoretim That's what I'm trying to say. Her speaking is natural but actually it's thin and light and that's her real voice. She darkens her voice to make a big tone and it loses a lot of resonance. I haven't heard any of her resonance since she was young. If you hear any of it, tell me. Of course you can't find any of problems when she talks bacause that's her real voice

  • @MenichiniOfficial This is an incredible load of bullshit.

First off, your voice displays actual intensity only if you place it properly. Christina's voice is not intense at all, it just has a screamy quality which her deluded fanbase mistakes for "power".

Secondly, randomly splattering your voice around and screaming your lungs out (like Christina does) isn't anywhere near being soulful. Do you know what it actually is? Lack of discipline. Karaoke singing. Amateurishness.

  • @Stefano94x Amen to that!

  • @Stefano94x i hope youre not talking about christina GRIMMIE. i will hurt a nigga xD

  • damn. i KNEW there was something about charice's voice that felt forced. now i know what it is! thanks! lol and that clip from the xfactor was so great! xDD

  • YOUR QUOTE ON WHAT PAVAROTTI SAID AT 5:12,IS WRONG AND MORE IMPORTANTLY YOUR INCORRECT ABOUT WHAT HE ACTUALLY MEANT,EVERY VOCAL TEACHER ON U-TUBE ATTACHES THEIR SELF TO SOMETHING PAVAROTTI SAID IN A VAGUE AND UNEDUCATED ATTEMPT TO ALIGN THEMSELVES WITH HIM,NO NEED TO RESPOND TO THIS FOR I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT OTHER PEOPLES OPINIONS,I JUST FEEL A TRUE VOICE TEACHER SHOULD BE COMPLETELY RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERYTHING THEY SAY,ESPECIALLY TO IMPRESSIONABLE STUDENTS WHO REALLY WANT TO LEARN CORRECTLY

  • Comment removed

  • Hi WestVoice God Bless You.. Your tips helped me a lot. Can you assess Martina McBride and Jonalyn Viray belts? Are they doing the right thing when they are singing? Thanks in advanced!

  • beyonce, shirley, steve, david, barbra, whitney, mariah, juan - perfectly neutral :P

    miley, jessica - high

sarah, christina, fergie - HIGHER THAN THE HEAVENS ABOOOVE!

  • @iiAmitx3 i think christina was even higher haha

  • Will.i.am's face said it ALL about Fergie. My my my! FAIL.

  • Mariah's voice on "You and I" was heavily, heavily altered by the techies. Strip away the phony echo and auto-tuning, she sounds horrible. Really, there's a video of it. Without the vocal "sweetening" Mariah was off key throughout the entire song. Kid you not.

  • Singing is a craft. I love Jennifer Hudson but, I argued (mostly with myself) that someone should pull her aside and teach her how to sing (1) properly, (2) appropriate (3) with style. BTW: I think sometimes, especially with soul & r&b music, a natural "strain" is part of what an artist wants the audience to see. I listen for that--the "edge of the seat is she going to hit that note?" feeling. But even that should be executed properly, appropriately, and with style.

  • HAHHAHA OMG WILLIAM'S FACE

  • I thought beyonces larynx was high how do we find out the answers?

  • can someone explain how to relax the soft pallet or whatever it is you have to do? I sort of don't understand it

also when I try to belt, my larynx goes up and I can't control it, how can I belt and relax the larynx?

  • LOL Will.i.am was looking at Fergie like she was retarded or something.

  • @Scopa7 LOL he knew that did not come out right.

  • Wow! This is the first run of comments I have seen that is truly like an ongoing conversation. I have been told for years I should make a CD, but with all the picking... It scares the crap out of me. This video can be an incredible tool.. Well done. But still...it is this kind of conversation that has me quivering in my boots over here!!!

  • Will.i.am's face at Fergie loool

  • I am really late to the conversation but how can you tell is the larynx is being compressed as opposed to just raised or lowered?

  • M.usic

    A.lways

    R.eign

    I.n

    A.nyones

    H.eart

  • @chesleycareystar omg...where did u get that? so cool

  • @kelvinpyaeko I OWN IT :) from my music notebook <3

  • Thank you so much for this video! I found it very helpful and will keep this in mind when I'm singing :)

  • Miley, Sarah, Jessica, and Fergie are the ones the are straining their voices. About Christina, I can understand why she kinda strained her voice, 'cause her style is rock. Rock singers usually do have to strain their throat to have that rich husky sound. But even so, if they are good rock singers it still easy for them to sing high even if they're straining.

  • @popups46okay ewww.misconception...no, straining notes are never good for your vocal chords...and those rock singers use falsettos or their natural voice alone is raspy and husky

  • @popups46okay

I think Adam Lambert is a much better example of a "strained husky sound" that's done with good technique and ease (well, as much good technique as is possible when singing like that) than Christina. He can sustain full voice fifth octave belts much more easily than Christina, despite the fact that he is male and thereby a much lower voice type. Also, the lady (don't know her name) at 7:00 is also a much better example of "strained" rock singing.

  • The technique of a "neutral larynx" is in debate right now in the vocal pedagogy community. A completely, non-moving larynx is actually unnatural to the larynx itself. It floats when we speak; rising and dropping for speech inflection. It should be allowed to float for singing.

This idea of pushing/pulling is OK - within limits. In fact some vocal tonalities require a slightly lifted or lowered larynx.

  • this video you could really not tell the difference in some of the vocal performances, celine, leona, and mariah you could not tell who larynx was relaxed.

  • very bias in favor of mariah, I have seen several performances of her pushing her larynx, I love her, but she too is guilty of it. she is an incredible singer.

  • Jessica Simpson's technique is down the toilet... She has waaay to much tension.

  • You are wrong! In higher pitches the Larynx must go down. It goes down a 16th of an inch, becuase higher pitches require more air pressure the larynx must remain open and the throat and mouth openest! But I do agree that a relax larynx is required for high and low notes.

  • i think phelps was holding the voice. It didn't sound free, I'm afraid...

  • @flaze3 yeah, it sounds heavy and too thick

  • great video!

  • LOL, it is funny cause I always thought Charice was always singing with a low Larynx to emulate Whitney Houston's natural tone.

  • @FeelinMinnesota lol that is the most hilarious comment i've ever read and i agree 100%

  • 09:43 Williams like What the fuck is that fucking noise? O_o lol

  • When you sing with natural larynx, more vibrato and resonance produce...

  • Mariah, quit flailing your arms about. Christina, quit with the mic deal with your fingers. great singers, but such annoying habits...

  • @brywool Yeah well, everyone has SOMETHING they do when they sing! Honestly, it doesn't matter what they do as they sing as long as they still sound GREAT doing it. Stop being so trivial.

  • Great video! Btw, the plural of larynx is larynges, and it's vocal cords, not chords. Also, it might be good to talk about resetting the larynx when it starts creeping up. Flipping over into head voice, even briefly, can reset the larynx back into a more neutral position. This is probably the only way some singers with unhealthy belts and/or grueling tour schedules can keep singing.

  • Comment removed

  • Damn karaoke singers!

  • I think that it's just a sort of reflex to get the larynx up as singers want to get the higher note. As a lyric tenor, i can reach the contre-ut and above with a neutral larynx position but i can have my larynx down also and with this position i lost my resonnance. Ih've learned the Italian Opera way of singing for now 8 years and i now that there are difference between the European technique (deutsch and French ...)

  • Comment removed

  • @mdehloum78 You meant Bel canto? Can you guide me some about the inhalation of voice?it is difficult.

  • *dead* @ fergie at the end!

  • Which is the song that Steve Perry is singing? :O

  • Lol... to the last one with Fergie... his face looked funny.... he was like.... ooookay

  • continue... to be honest, I started with Pop style like Mariah and Celine.. I used to have a lot of straining but I didn't have problems with it since I'm a female, hitting high notes isn't really an issue for me. I only found out that straining is wrong when I started singing opera, thats' when I had hard time. But I kept practicing singing with open throat for 4 years while doing opera and now I learned it. It's been much fun singing easily.. now I can sing opera and pop easily and relaxed.

  • I think it depends on what kind of style of music you are singing In terms of vocal techniques such as larynx straining etc... If you're an opera or classical singer it is important that you sing with an open throat and not strain your larynx. In modern music such as Pop music, straining actually depends on how high or low the person's vocal range is. If a pop singer tries to hit a note an octave higher than their vocal range, they will really strain it no matter what 'coz they wanna sound good.

  • You can tell a high larynx by how much their jaw is jutting out. Quick tip: you can prevent your larynx from going up by tilting your head slightly downwards.

Also, Jennifer Hudson's breathing technique is crap. Look at her shoulders shoot up!

  • @Ubersil We can also called it "Shallow Breathing"(jennifer Hudson)

  • hi there, i feel like i found the holy grail watching your videos! lol. Thank you so much....so in terms of improving one's ability to reach high notes and sustain them through this method of maintaining a neutral larynx, is it actually impossible for one to develop their vocal range? or do you believe that everyone ha a limit? would be interesting to hear your opinion on this

    thanx

  • @Yetunde87 Well, everyone has a limit but vocal range can be expanded by practicing, doing scales, singing with different techniques, etc. With this, your vocal range could probably expand an octave at most (in full voice), or sometimes a little more...

  • @WestVoice Hi,can I ask what you prefer,head resonance or mix? I can't really discriminate these two.

  • @WestVoice may i ask sarah geronimo's way of using her larynx.

  • @WestVoice so if it's neutral, it's a bit of a falsetto? for me, i kinda crack when i belt, so is it okay to use falsetto as a girl?

  • @novarias heck yea! mariah use falsetto all the time!

  • @MrButler124 oh, thanks! maybe i need a good mic to amplify my voice, because i feel that when i use falsetto, i might sound gay and if i belt i am like shouting.

  • @novarias you should just learn control and find your comfort zone, and practice on projection wit your falsetto:)

  • what do you think of anasatcia's technique?

  • (cont) from my understanding he is mixing correct? and i just realized i didn't mix i was using my faucualized voice to sing high chest notes(i'm trying to quit that hahaha) and now im tryin to sing on the right octave of songs now hahahaa it's actaully not hard. i can still maintain a C5-E5. just nned to reinforce them:) but anyway thankyouer!!! i love babs! she makes singing looks so EFFORTLESS and i would neva have known that she like a 2(3)octave range qith the way she sings hahaha

  • friend what is that song my girl babs is singing in the beginning of this vid?

  • @MrButler124 Oh, Babs is singing My Man :)

  • @WestVoice What song she sang in 8:36?

  • @MrButler124 thankyouer!! and hey even though xinta's larnyx was high on that last note on "make me wanna pray" i think she still kilt it hahahah i la i didn't want to like it because i know she's using a bad tech but i just couldn't help it, she just got to me anyway hahaha. and david phelps(just got done listenin to a vocal range vid) is awesome. i thiknk that's a male i can listen too who actaully sings high chest notes but doesn't do rock therefore it doesn't sound like a scream!

  • Legendtina.

  • @XTINASDISCIPLE ....oh ....Legend huh?

  • beyonce: neutral(she may not be everyone's cup of tea but at least she uses the right techinque) shirley: neutral miley: higher than the salvia ever got her steve: neutral sarah: high david: neutral babs: neutral xtina: high whitney: neutral mariah: neutral jessica: high juan: neutral fergie: HIGHHHHHHH(i love the way will.i.am was looking at her lol) what's my grade?

  • that holly jervis is so embarrassing to watch. i have never felt so embarrassed for anyone in my life

  • Raising the larynx is fine. Lots of classical teachers live on the myth that this is the worst thing ever. There is a very strong sound ideal in this kind of teaching which, depending on the teacher of course, can be a rock in the road to a student that has no intention of becoming a classical singer.

  • Which is the song that Steve Perry is singing? :O

  • -> the face expression of the guy while Fergie flips off is world best. WestVoice could'nt give a better example at the end of the vid.

You literally can read the guy's thoughts ...9:42"whooo, she is blowing off"

9:43"now, I'm little worried, she gone nuts?

9:44"well, never mind, let her roll 8)

9:45"I'm kinda impressed how she can completely let go.."

9:49"lord jesus mercy!!! stop that woman orgasm in front of me ... somebody sees me here must think I've done terrible things to her ;p

  • I rarely comment on youtube-vids but this one here is an exceptional good and of high value piece. Thanks WestVoice for doing this awesome job here :)

@IAmPlaysWithSquirrel: LOL, you nailed it with the comparison of axe rose and Fergie.

I have to admit I credit axl for never letting his frequencies off road like Fergie did in the last example !:) Just imaging how that would sound.

    ...though.. well... better not.

  • What the FUCK was Fergie doing at the end of the video? I once said this chick is a better singer than Axl Rose, I take that back. She just has a tone that is easier on the ears than Axl, that's all.

  • Does Whitney sing with a High Larynx

  • @Chimier

    Great technique, bad tone.

  • Remember you were talking about Maria Callas...how critics would say of her that she had great technique but bad tone. I was making that correlation with what some say of Beyoncé(at least on youtube), but I posted all late so I understand why you would forget what I was responding to of your post.

  • @FemaleVocalLover1975 Oh ok lol

  • @FemaleVocalLover1975 lol Knowles doesn't have a bad tone

  • I agree, I am speaking on what OTHERS, at least some on youtube say of her(how critics would say of her that she had great technique but bad tone. I was making that correlation with what some say of Beyoncé(at least on youtube).

  • @FemaleVocalLover1975 well judging by the maturity level and desperation of ppl on this site I wouldn't even take it serious

  • @FemaleVocalLover1975

Tone or the innate sound of a voice does not make someone a good singer, how one uses the voice is what makes the difference between amateur and pro.

  • 3:40 just made me laugh like CRAZY lol...

  • When singing classical pieces, you have to pull your larynx down, right? (Like the yawning technique, it raises your soft palate and lowers your larynx, but it's necessary to make the higher notes not sound mouse-like, haha, am I right? That you're talking about belting, not about head voice...?)

  • love mariah always SHE IS THE BEST

  • I find it very interesting what you say in this video, and I am curious to know more especially about the connection between the larynx and the diaphragm. You say that the larynx has to be kept neutral in order for the diaphragm to do support work. Why is that?

  • How do you lift your soft palate? Or what is a soft palate? lol

  • Thanks for this video. It really helped me with my singing. By keeping my larynxed relaxed I can now effortlessly belt F#5,G5,G#5,and an A5! Thank you soo much!

  • @stardusth2o LMAO

  • What's the title of the song at 4:23?

  • I like your videos but it seems that in these kind of videos you are bringing down Celine and putting Mariah on a pedestal. I'm not judging you or anything but that's just what it seems like.

  • @ 9:40 Will-i-am looked at her like bitch stfu and lower your larynx lol.

  • @WestVoice beyonce is neutral

  • @WestVoice Awesome!

  • @WestVoice I thought Beyonslays was neutral here.

  • @watchitww1 It's neutral... He got one wrong, still an A though :)

  • @WestVoice Thanks. That vid made me laugh yesterday but helped me out today.

  • @Bocapreto

    You only got 1 wrong!

    Beyoncé's is neutral!

    :)

  • @TheVocalPower Oh well almost had it :-p

  • @Bocapreto Uhm... Beyonce's larynx was amazingly stable.

  • what performance is the black eyed peas?? where? when?

  • nothing wrong wid high, what i observed, when u here vibrato on d highnote u call it good/neutral but when u here high note without it u call it high or pulling way up, like d one who sang listen twas great and shanice, its called belting like a pro

  • @wtfisthis29 Not actually, Barbra wasn't belting with vibrato at the end, yet her larynx is still neutral. But yeah, notes with vibrato are generally better, but not always. The one who sang listen wasn't great, she was struggling and squeezing her vocal cords.

  • @wtfisthis29 belting like a pro? sarah geronimo a professional belter? oh cmon, my belts are way better than hers, and i can't belt at all.

  • @wtfisthis29 nah. People who belt with their larynx high usually strain.

  • were is regine velasquez here the asias songbird?

  • What song is Shirley Bassey singing at 7:41?
