I feel like there's a clear comparison to be made between breeding animals to be used as pets for human enjoyment and breeding animals to be used as food for human enjoyment. You could use the same argument for chickens, most of them wouldn't survive in the wild because they've been bred for a specific purpose.
I really don't see how any animal could "need" a human to survive. They aren't parasites that need a host. Yes they're bred to be dependants on us, but so are farm animals.

What? I have two pets, both would have been left to the wilderness or the streets otherwise. my dog was abused, starved, scared out of her mind and bairly weighed over a pound at a month old, and no that isnt very heavy especially for a pup. She's now almost 3 years old and lives very happily with me. I will admit I myself am not vegan or a veggitarian but to be honest all I eat mainly is chicken, shrimp, and hambers (every once in a while) from burgerking. I dont eat at mc donalds or KFC cause alot of the food is greasy. Anyway she's happy and healthy now and lives contently.
I would add that if you're going to get a pet from a breeder, maybe that's not the best idea either. Sure those animals are in need too, but to buy them will only create demand for the breeder to produce more animals and it will never end that way.
all 13 of my cats and my dog were strays and where very sickly when I got them i have saved all there lives the one when I took her to the vet he said she wouldn't have made it through the week. All my pets are VERY happy and it's better then them being dead.
I realise this video is over a year old and your views may be different. What you're talking about is abolitionist vegans. The point is to phase out domesticated animals, adopting purely from shelters and eradicating pet stores because it is not our right to keep other animals for means of companionship. People need to have pets and there need to be some zoos because it is educational to people, brings them closer to nature, and it actually keeps people loving animals and MORE likely to become vegan and support animals, etc.

Yeah I decided to go vegan but I'm all for having pets in the house to take care of. My kitty (staying with my mom since I left her place) my mom's friend found abandoned in a box about 2 weeks old, a couple weeks before my 12th birthday when they gave her to me. I miss her, she's such a pretty kitty and actually looks like she may be the same or similar breed as Caboo.
I mean, I feel a deeper spiritual connection with animals than I feel with most humans. BUT it's not sexual. I just think they are great friends. My cat knows when I'm sad and makes sure I'm happy before he goes about his normal cat stuff. He's great :D

If we hadn't picked up Midas, he probably wouldn't have gotten adopted. There's only a small chance for old cats to get adopted, and he was already 15 when we took him home. He is now 20 and incredibly old physically, but god is he still incredibly content and very happy to get to order us around. We're our servants, he's the boss, we serve him as much cat-proof milk, nibbles and catfood as he desires, and he gets to lounge on his own spot on the sofa and claim the entire garden if he wishes to.

Vegans say breeding, selling etc is not OK, but: as long as there are pets around, it's totally OK (even good!) to adopt them.
Also, animal rights does not mean giving the exact rights and status as humans to animals. It means giving them rights according to their properties and interests. (to be ctd)
So, vegans do not want to make all equal in the way you depict it. E.g., vegans are opposed to sex with animals as they cannot consent with full responsibilty.

Correct me if I am wrong but I was under the impression that the issue is not with having an existing companion animal but with the breeding of new companion animals. I agree that it would be despicable and cruel to refuse to take care of an existing companion animal. I think the big issue concerns getting companion animals neutered or spayed so that new companion animals will not be born and end up being euthanized in shelters.

None of those animals listed are our natural predators. Those animals do not hunt humans on a regular basis. Lions hunt antelope and other game on a regular basis. Bears eat fish. Do these animals eat humans from time to time? Yeah. But its when enter their ecosystem. I have no predator hunting me in Ohio. Africans probably try to stay away from lions, but those lions aren't going out of their way to track them down. Humans, on the other hand, hunt every single one of the animals you listed.

Animal domestication is annoying and it will only end up causing more problems. It is already causing many many problems as it is. Feral populations and the fact that millions are put to sleep every day is startling. There needs to be a way to keep breeding of domesticated animals in check. Making pets commercially available like they were some kind of packaged meat at a grocery store is atrocious. Fact is, you shouldn't own a pet unless you are prepared to care for that animal until it dies.
One of my father's cats was found in the parking lot of a diner in Florida. He found the cat under a van. It's ribs were showing, and it's tail was smashed. He took it home and fed it and took care of it. Part of its tail fell off due to lack of nerve endings in that area, but she would have died without him.
My cat was found with a litter of kittens in a construction site. Their mother had abandoned them. They were taken home and fed. One got sick and died, and the rest were sent to homes.

I'm vegan and I agree with you... but I have no idea where beastiality came into this argument. Having sex with animals isn't wrong because they're not equal to us, it's wrong because they aren't giving their consent to it. Which makes it rape, which is wrong no matter what your species is. And just a reminder, people are animals too. We're not above other animals; we're just different from them. And that doesn't mean we can have sex with them... I don't where that idea came from.
My dog found my cat under our tool shed, and we found also 4 other cat's in our yard and also took them in and gave them to family members. Once we found this kitten and she had frost bite since she was outside during the winter, so we gave her to our cousin (since we have a cat already and I love him very much) ^.^

the latest one I kept (the others were given to good homes) I found Taco she was like a month old and covered in mud, she was shaking so hard, I took her home and cleaned her, she's about a tear old now.

My dog came from a broken home where all he we fed was bread. i am so happy i took him home with me when i did. for a week after i got him he was one sick dog, he was throwing up and pooping out chicken bones that he had eaten out of the garbage on the street, he was filthy and had warms. between my boyfriend and i we made that dog healthy and he is now like our son. But the only reason he's able to be a vegetarian is because people in the United States have a huge abundance of food and are able to sustain a vegetarian diet due to the wealth of the country. While being a vegetarian is an option for Americans and various industrialized countries, it is not an option for most parts of the world. Not to mention if everyone decided to become a vegetarian there would be a complete collapse of the food industry as well as many other problems.

I love my animals. I've given one of my cats a home for almost 8 years now. She knows when I'm sad and when I'm mad and knows when I'm in pain. She 'takes care of me' in a way, you could say. She's like my child, almost. I love her to death. I take care of her, and she takes care of me. If I didn't have her, then where would she be? On the street. She probably wouldn't be alive this long.

I feel like there's a clear comparison to be made between breeding animals to be used as pets for human enjoyment and breeding animals to be used as food for human enjoyment. You could use the same argument for chickens, most of them wouldn't survive in the wild because they've been bred for a specific purpose.
I really don't see how any animal could "need" a human to survive. They aren't parasites that need a host. Yes they're bred to be dependants on us, but so are farm animals.

my dog was abused, starved, scared out of her mind and bairly weighed over a pound at a month old, and no that isnt very heavy especially for a pup. She's now almost 3 years old and lives very happily with me. I will admit I myself am not vegan or a veggitarian but to be honest all I eat mainly is chicken, shrimp, and hambers (every once in a while) from burgerking. I dont eat at mc donalds or KFC cause alot of the food is greasy. Anyway she's happy and healthy now and lives contently.

I would add that if you're going to get a pet from a breeder, maybe that's not the best idea either. Sure those animals are in need too, but to buy them will only create demand for the breeder to produce more animals and it will never end that way.

all 13 of my cats and my dog were strays and where very sickly when I got them i have saved all there lives the one when I took her to the vet he said she wouldn't have made it through the week. All my pets are VERY happy and it's better then them being dead.

My kitty (staying with my mom since I left her place) my mom's friend found abandoned in a box about 2 weeks old, a couple weeks before my 12th birthday when they gave her to me. If we hadn't picked up Midas, he probably wouldn't have gotten adopted. There's only a small chance for old cats to get adopted, and he was already 15 when we took him home. He is now 20 and incredibly old physically, but god is he still incredibly content and very happy to get to order us around. We're our servants, he's the boss, we serve him as much cat-proof milk, nibbles and catfood as he desires, and he gets to lounge on his own spot on the sofa and claim the entire garden if he wishes to.

Where did you get those opinions? Most vegans will disagree just like you did.
Vegans say breeding, selling etc is not OK, but: as long as there are pets around, it's totally OK (even good!) to adopt them.
Also, animal rights does not mean giving the exact rights and status as humans to animals. It means giving them rights according to their properties and interests. (to be ctd)

Correct me if I am wrong but I was under the impression that the issue is not with having an existing companion animal but with the breeding of new companion animals. I agree that it would be despicable and cruel to refuse to take care of an existing companion animal. I think the big issue concerns getting companion animals neutered or spayed so that new companion animals will not be born and end up being euthanized in shelters.

@ meercat I get wat ur saying. but on the topic of humans "being on top of the food chain" ur wrong. In order 2 b on top of the food chain, u must have no natural predators. Meaning nothing hunts u and nothing wants 2 eat u. Lions, sharks(sometimes), crocs, alligators, bears, etc, even PEOPLE. I'm sorry dude but we are NOT on the top of the food chain.

None of those animals listed are our natural predators. Those animals do not hunt humans on a regular basis. Lions hunt antelope and other game on a regular basis. Bears eat fish. Do these animals eat humans from time to time? Yeah. But its when enter their ecosystem. I have no predator hunting me in Ohio. Africans probably try to stay away from lions, but those lions aren't going out of their way to track them down. Humans, on the other hand, hunt every single one of the animals you listed.

Animal domestication is annoying and it will only end up causing more problems. It is already causing many many problems as it is. Feral populations and the fact that millions are put to sleep every day is startling. There needs to be a way to keep breeding of domesticated animals in check. Making pets commercially available like they were some kind of packaged meat at a grocery store is atrocious. Fact is, you shouldn't own a pet unless you are prepared to care for that animal until it dies.

One of my father's cats was found in the parking lot of a diner in Florida. He found the cat under a van. It's ribs were showing, and it's tail was smashed. He took it home and fed it and took care of it. Part of its tail fell off due to lack of nerve endings in that area, but she would have died without him.
My cat was found with a litter of kittens in a construction site. Their mother had abandoned them. They were taken home and fed. One got sick and died, and the rest were sent to homes.

why do you feed your animal(s) other animals, it causes suffering. that is not pleasurable. what should we do about creatures that eat other creatures in the wild? i want to feed them plant matter but they regulate the population... if we have an ability to minimize suffering and promote enjoyability and succession of life than we should do it however we can, ps im a celebate vegan.

I'm vegan and I agree with you... but I have no idea where beastiality came into this argument. Having sex with animals isn't wrong because they're not equal to us, it's wrong because they aren't giving their consent to it. Which makes it rape, which is wrong no matter what your species is. And just a reminder, people are animals too. We're not above other animals; we're just different from them. And that doesn't mean we can have sex with them... I don't where that idea came from.

My dog found my cat under our tool shed, and we found also 4 other cat's in our yard and also took them in and gave them to family members. Once we found this kitten and she had frost bite since she was outside during the winter, so we gave her to our cousin (since we have a cat already and I love him very much) ^.^

the latest one I kept (the others were given to good homes) I found Taco she was like a month old and covered in mud, she was shaking so hard, I took her home and cleaned her, she's about a tear old now.

He doesn't eat meat or animal products, but doesn't force others not to.
He has a kitty... calls it Jedi.

My 'babies' are Cinders and Storm. Both rescued :)
PS: I'm vegetarian. So don't think I'm defending the consumption of meat. I'm not.

My dog came from a broken home where all he we fed was bread. i am so happy i took him home with me when i did. for a week after i got him he was one sick dog, he was throwing up and pooping out chicken bones that he had eaten out of the garbage on the street, he was filthy and had warms. between my boyfriend and i we made that dog healthy and he is now like our son. I understand that he is just a dog but dogs need a home and someone to love them just like us/

Yes RaspaChango. But the only reason he's able to be a vegetarian is because people in the United States have a huge abundance of food and are able to sustain a vegetarian diet due to the wealth of the country. While being a vegetarian is an option for Americans and various industrialized countries, it is not an option for most parts of the world. Not to mention if everyone decided to become a vegetarian there would be a complete collapse of the food industry as well as many other problems.

Someone put an animal outside just like that. That is one off the thing making me so angry I could kill. Ok I'm not a vegetarian, I eat meat, but when you kill for food then it's killing something. When you kill with an intention behind, then it's murder. But to put an animal outside just to die. That's just cruel, and the person who did that deserve to be food

i'm a vegan and i do agree with you (kinda), most vegans do have "pets" (i prefer to call them my children, i have a pit bull and i call him my son) i dont get animals from pet shops tho cause its better to adopt from an animal shelter because less people go there, yea i dont think that that keeping them from being truely equal will prevent bestiality cause there will still be those people who would want to fuck animals. I do agree with the taking care of them part tho :)

I love my animals. I've given one of my cats a home for almost 8 years now. She knows when I'm sad and when I'm mad and knows when I'm in pain. She 'takes care of me' in a way, you could say. She's like my child, almost. I love her to death. I take care of her, and she takes care of me. If I didn't have her, then where would she be? On the street. She probably wouldn't be alive this long.
