  • Kara=Black

    gun=day

so in turkish this means the blackday dance

  • @kalimerhaba1 thank you for your comment and "Merhaba' to you too:). Although "Kara" is black, it also means "Dark" as in having a "Bad day". Since this song is about a woman falling into a well "Bad day" is probably the right translation in this case.

  • @tobeortube Yes i have ment that having a "Bad day"

in turkish there is an expression called "Kara Sevda" means near by the same a love wich is unreachable

  • @tobeortube i found the native lyrics:

Ai Gounam, Ai Gounam, Ai Gounam, Karagounam.

  • I live in Birmingham & have participated with the dance part of the festival many years ago. This is not really a karagouna so I don't know why they called it that. This is just a choreographed routine for the festival patrons. We will soon start a Hellenic Dance Program to teach authentic dances with authentic music & costumes so maybe next year we will see something more accurate.

  • I always thought karagouna was a dance that meant "sexy legs". Where am I going wrong here?

  • what means "kara" in english?

  • @uluatilla "Dark" or "Black"

  • ..Η ΚΑΡΑΓΚΟΥΝΑ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΘΕΣΣΑΛΙΚΗ...

  • hey there, I love the fact that the guy says its a HEAVY DUTY Dance....LOVE IT

  • heheheheh i would love to come and show how its done.....OPA!

  • Love the dance and Song - wrong commentary thou. And the dance in this video clip is all choreography! This is not the way the dance is danced by the Karagounides in Thessaly!

  • @MrGreekdancer Thank you for watching! Yes, it is a choreography and I am only the videographer here. You are welcome to come by and show us the original dance when and if you are ever over here in Birmingham, Alabama!

  • I have to agree with the majority; this is not the karagouna I was taught at Greek school. However, it is good that we are not letting any of these traditional dances be forgotten.

  • karaguna is a turkish word english mean is black day

  • wow i always have to cry when i hear all this but i dont know why.

  • @witchcerridwen Thank you for watching! I think, this song is about a woman falling into a well. May be that's what made you cry.

  • @tobeortube no thats gerakina

  • i preffer zeibetiko or hansapiko rather than this, because for a non greek is a little bit " strange". opa hellada

  • hey im 100% greek =D

  • Then ine the correct Karagouna-steps, sorry! Ioannis

  • Again thank you for watching and placing your comment! I think this is choreographed with traditional steps in mind. This isn't what I was shown as Karagouna dance either, but the dancers sure did a great job presenting this version.

  • Its very nice that you trying to continue the Greek Tradition outside Greece, but everything is wrong!!!

1)Karagouna is a dance fron Thessalia.

2)The name Karagouna come from the words Kara(Black)&Gouna(fur)

3)Karagouna steps are different. That I saw, was more choreography and not tradition.

  • Thank you for watching!

  • the name Karagouna comes from the people called Karaguni, the Vlachs, one of the major nationality that formed the Hellens of today

  • den einai apo tin hpeiro i karagouna!!! alla apo tin Thessalia kai pio sigkekrimena apo tin Karditsa!!! :)

  • Wonderfully dancing! OPA

and there only teens?! I assume... well, dosn't matter, this is just amazing dancing

  • not epirus. THESSALY. i am from Thessaly and Karagouna are the thessalian women. anyway the style and the dance is wrong too.sorry.

  • Thanks for watching and for your comment!

  • thank you for reading, and i hope i didn't hurt you or something

  • No, you didn't hurt my feelings! As for the dance, we were thought a little different then shown here also. Someone else had commented about the dance and I asked him to post one but he hasn't posted anything yet. I will post another dance video but it is hard to get the dancers together:)

  • okay :) keep up the work, i will wait for the video!

  • karagouna is from thessaly not ipirous.

  • Thanks for watching and for your comment!

  • karagoynides is not Vlachs. Are you familiar with Greek history?? Vlachs came from romania not from thessaly. "Kara" in ancient Greek means "Head" "Koynin" means "Shake". The one who shake his head. Read History before you speak rubbish.

  • Thank you for watching the video! Let's leave the history to real historians!

  • Exoyme pente trixes sto kefali tha mas tis riksete kai aytes. Garagoynides einai apo Thessalia. Yparxei kai mia istoria gia tin onomasia apo megaloy aleksandroy epoxi. Ala na berdeyoyn tin garagoyna me ta ipirotika simainei oti oi anthropoi den kseroyn ti toys ginete.

  • AGHH im dancing this dance with my church & wer eperforming it labor day weekend.. im so proud i acxtually know the steps (= its really nice that were doing the exact same steps as this video so if i want to practice i can come to this video (=

  • I do have one and I am uploading it right now. Stay tuned

  • Different villages in the area have their own style for this dance. This video above is not authentic Karagouna. It is highly choreographed which is a shame because the dance is beautiful enough without this type of choreography.

  • orlingas, thank you for watching and for your comment! I hope you have an authentic version to post so I can see what you mean!

  • Thessaly, not Epirus.

Another example of how it should NOT be danced.

Dance it the way you want, but don't call it Karagkouna

  • Dear Karagkouna, thank you for watching! I will appreciate the correct dance video posted.

  • από την Θεσσαλία είναι ρε καλά λέει ο scarface

  • KARAGOUNA IS FROM THESSALIA VLAKA!

  • Κώστας Σαμαράς,ο καλύτερος χοροδιδάσκαλος για Θεσσαλία!Διδάσκει στην Αθήνα.

  • karagkounides are from Thessaly...

  • karagkounides are greeks, romioi!they speek only the greek language, and in their language you can find words ever from the homeric period(2800 years ago).also there are some words latin turkish etc that improves that karagounides were at the same place THESSALIA at all the periods of greek history.

  • keeps the politics out of it...just enjoy the music and dance and be proud..I am

  • Thank you for watching, enjoying and commenting!

  • Karaguna yet another word for Vlachs.

    karaguns aka rămăni aka romăni

Surprisisingly very little of what we call "Greek" folclore is Greek, not so surprising if you consider that before those 850 000 or more Greek came, those were VLach lands.

  • Well, 850,000 Greeks came to Greece from Micra Asia (Turkey!) in 1924. A few Turkish words came along with them. What is the BIG deal? The English dictionary is 40% Greek words!

  • Exactly! Thank you for watching and thank you for your comments!

  • The Karagouna if from Thessalia not Epirus. We, Epirotans, aren't Karagounides! :) We are prood Highlanders! :) He makes a mistake, but ok, isnt to die for ;)

    nice video! five stars!

  • What do you expect, This 'Greek' is an American now, where geography is not in the school lessons.

  • I live in Utah and we have a large greek comunity with amazing dance groups. I am in two. We do this dance, and its interesting to see it done by others with different choriography (sp? lol)

  • Thank you for watching! I would like to see your version, can you send me a copy?

  • The Karagouna if from Thessalia not Epirus.

  • Thank you for watching my video!

  • Does anybody know the source of the music? I have this exact version of Karagouna I got from a dance group I was once in, but I never knew where it came from.

  • I got this answer from the musicians:its called karagouna from epiros and it is covered by many many greek artists.

  • Thessalia reeeee! Brrrrrr Ombrrrrrrrrr

  • KARAGOYNA ME OLOI MOY TIN ZWH !!!!!!!!!!!

    Trikala gia pantaaa

  • Slight correction.I karagouna einai thesalliotiko tragoudi.

  • Yes it is from Thessalia

but we dance this dance in Epiros too.

  • thesalia and only thesalia trikala. that wear that song caming from.ok .not from ipeiros or creta

  • ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great job to the dancers but somebody please tell the announcer that Karagouna is not from Ipiros but from Thessalia . A pretty big mistake, somebody must have misinformed him!! He should know for future reference if he is a musician!!!

  • Karaguni ("The Black Capes") is the designation of a subgroup of the Vlachs, a people in northern Greece, Albania and Macedonia, who have many of the characteristics of ethnicity, including their own language. They now live mostly in Epirus, but Thessalia was once part of their realm. From the Classic Encyclopedia:

  • And for those who do not know, Kostas Kastanis speaking on the microphone! One of the best guys and bouzouki player :-) Filakia, Eleftheria
