Liverpool maintains, like all the great cities of the world ie, New York, Dublin,Glasgow,Paris etc,a unique identity, even within the confines of their own countries, almost a republic within a country, and the people represent that with energy and a well worn wit
The Overhead was in such a poor state of repair from both war damage and the acid smoke of the trains that ran beneath it that surveyors could not pass it as safe for passengers. In 1956 it needed over £6 million - about £100 million today - for repairs. The South docks were even then falling into disuse and the railway was costing more than it took in in fares. Simple economics saw it off.
Great video. When I first discovered this railway existed I was fascinated. I was in 'pool last week and could still imagine it being there. I thought what a shame it had to go. Oh for hindsight. It would have made a fantastic tourist attraction to compliment the docklands development.
@colgregg1 ...I agree,to this day in Boston and Chicago they have retained the overhead railway system,in fact, some of the footage shown looks like east coast America, a real shame it had to come down.
Nice footage... not to overstate my opinion but the fact that this track was taken down and the original Cavern Club is now a car park, the city fathers who made these decisions should be prosecuted as terrorists (I'm only half joking!)
It would make life so much easier if it was to re-open, but it isn't realistic 1 bit, because of buildings now in the way of the origional route.
And they still haven't finnished the building work in the city center or along the front. Any1 visiting Liverpool is gonna go home an say it's nothin but a buildin site.

I've ridden the one in Chicago, still going strong & looks very similar. I'm originally from Liverpool, but too young to remember this.

That would be amazing now if it were still there. I think they should rebuild it.
