2:45 to 3:30 is wise words. When you think of the brains that is out there that can create brilliant things like Fairlight and sadly goverments hi-jack these ppl and get them to design technology of destruction.Sadly the ppl at the top of this world are psychopaths in the literal sense. They are psychotic.
It is refreshing to hear the brains behind Fairlight make that statement at 2:45 to 3:30.
Just like the Concorde Airlines the Fairlight project was doomed for extinction as we know these products wasn't cost effective to manufacture and few people could only afford their hefty price tag the Fairlight inc. was indeed eating itself out Business.
This is very amazing. I am in the same position now, starting out from my living room, marketing my new Reason refill called Fairlight CMI Legacy, which contains the entire Fairlight IIx library. It is made commercially available through PowerFX (dotcom). I hardly think I'll ever get to the point where I need to employ some people, much less 90 of them, but I'm hoping it will kick of a little bit anyway :)
Outstanding.... and that was only 1984. Kate Bush's THE DREAMING was done on it, as well as a lot of PET SHOP BOYS, THOMAS DOLBY and PETER GABRIEL material.
Good to see one of the original Fairlight "marsters" Mars Lasar doing his thing. Mars was responsible for alot of the music demo sequences that shipped with the Fairlight CMI's in it's hey day & this video only hints at his involvment. Boy have we come a long way!!
These guys managed to realise something very difficult to do at the time. I tried the same and so did many others at the time along with drum machines but couldn't get it together like these guys did. Well done.
I like the immediacy of what you can do with this instrument, and the music they played in this vid still sounds really good!

His comments at the end are hilarious. I think Fairlight is the only memorable export from NSW in the last 40 years. Except for coal. Lots of coal.

it was amazing for it's time.
i recoded some stuff back in the 80s. the band i was with at that time, used a fairlight cmi which belonged to producer Trevor horn of the Buggles.
the orchestral string sounds of the fairlight completely blew us away.
for those people that could afford the £60.000 price tag it was well worth it.
a friend of mine sold his old fairlight for £2000.
personally i think he should have kept it, but he needed the money.
