Before she became famous she used to play at the "Middle Deck" (or maybe it was the "Upper Dec", been a long time) in Halifax. every month or so. At that time I was in a band that played a lot at the "Lower Deck". Many times after our gig was over we would all go up to catch the last set of her show..

Her shows were awesome. She was really quite cute back then, hopping around the stage in her cowgirl outfit and that incredible voice.

This was beautiful. Leonard Cohen's lyrics have a subtle and pain-filled interplay of emotion. So many top artists have covered this song over the years. I certainly haven't heard most of them. But I got the feeling that in general, they were showing off their vocal talent, and never brought to the song the depth that Cohen himself gave it in his own simpler rendition.

But K.D. used her virtuosity as a singer in just the right way, portraying the heart-rending emotions with such precision.
