After watching this, I realize that Lemieux wasn't even that fast. Hell, he doesn't even seem that good. Somehow, the way he pulls the puck back in an unexpected direction before making the shot just seems to baffle the other team shitless.
@DouglasMikelas Just the way he moves seems clumsy and sloppy. It seems like he's constantly about to lose the puck or trip over his own skates. I don't know how he did it but he managed to beat the goalie almost every time, which I guess is what makes him so impressive.
Lemieux was like the Harlem Globetrotters playing against the team of local firemen. Nobody was on his level, Gretzky and Orr were the only ones who came close.
Ah, this is the Mike Lange I remember, prior to his assault. He never seemed to be the same on camera after that. I miss the Lange-isms after a goal is scored.
lol @ the epic interference on that last goal against Quebec! Seriously... players today are big babies compared to what they were back then. Nowadays, they would have just fallen on their ass, and wait for the penalty to be called.

@2112murphy hate to say it but you need to watch the video on my page if you think lemieux was even remotely close to be being the best at splitting the D
imagine if Mario played during the modern era. The goal he scored against Quebec, check out the water ski job 1:35 the player stops hooking once he catches up and is in the slot area
Seeing that last goal of his, against the Nordiques... you have to realized how changed the NHL has since. I could count something like five hooking penalties on that Nordique player on Lemieux, lol. Different times, different style, I guess. But such a great player. I don't care who is the best, most important, is that the best is from Canada! =]
GRETZKY IS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME. "IF IF IF" DOESNT MAKE MARIO THE BEST. IF MY AUNT HAD A DICK SHED BE MY UNCLE, BUT SHE DOESNT. MARIO DOESNT HAVE THE NUMBERS. GET OVER IT, HES NOT THE BEST.
The beauty of it all is with mario you could make 3 or 4 more list like this and you could say "well what about this goal or that goal, why didn't it make the list?" he was that unbelievable! I mean 10 goals for him is not right, you should have to start at atleast 30 to get most of the breathtaking ones! The one that comes to mind for me is the one in Vancouver when he overskated the puck and put his stick back between his skates and flicked the puck over the goalies shoulder. Simply the Best
watching him was simply a joy... exhilirating... Wayne was the smartest player ever, Bobby Orr was probably the best all around player, but the most shockingly talented physical specimen was Mario... there was no answer to him, he was the only guy I ever saw in 1 on 2 situations where everytime I was sure he was either going to score or force the netminder to make a tough save... he was unbelievable
Absolutely amazing player, he never gives up on a play and demonstrates insane puck control even in the most chaotic situations. Makes beating defensemen look EASY too. It's probably professional sports greatest tragedy that his health was so poor throughout his career, who could imagine the heights he might've reached beyond the insanity he achieved.
@Jrocksthedirt you're probably right. Crosby's ability as a playmaker and pure goal scorer as well as a leader are simply unmatched in the NHL right now, yes, not even by Ovechkin. And all of it in the more defensive modern hockey league.
@tarantism Those two names belong nowhere near the same sentence. In no way will Ovechkin EVER be comparable to Lemieux. Not even in a parallel universe. Unless you're saying they both stand upright, play hockey, and shoot right handed. Thats where it ends.
@superstuntbum as lemieux is the greatest hockey player ever but thinking he is untouchable in terms of goal scoring is retarded. ovehckin is not far off of lemieuxs speed skill and strength package in terms of goal scoring prowess. but putting vision and play making into the equation puts lemuex above ovi in terms of overall skill. oveckin scored 65 while his next closest teammate had 69 points and get this, defence and goalies are actually good today

They have roughly the same point per game average (1.92 and 1.88) despite Gretzky playing far more games past his prime.
Gretzky has a better goals per game average (0.78 and 0.75) in his first 925 games (12 seasons). You're probably too stupid to understand that these averages drop as a player get older (Mario's avg is 0.45 after 1st retirement).
thought u meant all the games up to his 1st retirement. work on your english, saying "when he came back" would've been much clearer.
anyhow, you're still way wrong for making that dumb argument about gretzky hurting his average more by playing "old", since mario retired older.
the information selection game you're playing is completely ridiculous. you had to pick a specific amount of seasons to even try to have a point. you have zero objectivity or intellectual integrity.
lol, you're french canadian, so you can fuck off with telling me how english works.
making good arguments obviously isnt your thing, so go back to eating chips and making your shitty little flash games like the dumb and sad nerd you are.
lol, your dumb shitty little flash games dont even work properly. you're a complete failure. dont even bother trying to convince me you have a brain.
and i did gave you a rather precise estimation of my IQ, so why would you bother ask me to take a test? oh wait, i forgot, you were too stupid to pick up the hints, TWICE.
go back to making your shitty little flash games and stop commenting. no amount of information selection or bogus stats is gonna get you out of the quagmire your dumbass jumped into.
My goodness! Mario made the goalie like a complete fool! The man was THAT good! My goodness! I thought the Flower was something, and trust me, he was, but Mario was a notch higher or better than the Flower! I have to admit that, as a long time Habs fan!
mellowtribe, I completely agree with you 100000%. Mario was a machine! Just imagine if he had a winger like Kurri. Sweet Jesus! Can you imagine all the records he would have broken!
If we can back in time and see Mario going one one one against Orr! WOW!!
Irato, if Mario was healthy, look out. He would have broken some of Gretzky's record. Some of Mario's goals would never have been scored by Gretzky because of Mario's agility and size. His goal against Minnesota's Jon Casey in which he deaked the jock-strap out of Dave Chambers in 1991 is an example.
Amazing to consider many of these are agaist Bourque, Lidstrom, Leetch, rough Flyer teams, trap NJ teams with the perfect amount of time left on the clock. Someone needs to make a Mario Lemieux assist video.
That goal, when he puts the puck through Ray Bourque's leg and puts it top corner, I will never forget that moment... was 10 or 11, watching the game with my step-dad, and when the goal happened, I just turned over to him and said "...how did he do that?" For me, that was one of those mind-blowing moments that I'll never forget.
Here's a translation of the goal vs Quebec... Lemieux with his long reach gets rid of Fortier who catches up to him, harasses him, hooks him, holds him, enlaces him (!), ties him up (!), and he scores. Priceless.
Mike Lange's sidekick looks like he's doing the retro nonsense, including his big hair, back in the 1970s! Why do some people have this fascination of living, dressing and grooming themselves from another era?
@Habsfan0206 That is Paul Stagerwald...I think is his name....Reminds me of the old days when I lived in the burgh'......Most amazing player of all time.
I love Mario. In the new book "Let's Talk Hockey: 50 Wonderful debates" I saw on amazon the author pays homage to Mario in so many ways. He talks in great detail about his courage and heart during his cancer battle. My favourite quote from the book: "Lemieux elevated his game during the '91 and '92 playoffs that I don't believe anyone else has ever reached." Magnificent
As a Penguins fan, I am certainly blessed to have guys like Lemieux and Crosby play.
I hate the comparisons people make with Ovechkin and Crosby to 66 and 99. To me neither can compare to either of them.
Ovechkin reminds me of Brett Hull...cocky, killer shot, pure goal scorer.
Crosby is tough...he doesn't have the goal scoring touch of either Lemieux and Gretzky (he did score 92 in a season)..Sid reminds me of a Ron Francis, Gilbert Perrault type player.
There has never been anyone as talented as Mario that I have seen in my life. Seriously, Crosby and Ovechkin are great players, the best, but I'll be surprised if by the end of their careers we will be talking about them in the same breath as Mario
My guess is the analyst/color guy we hear breaking down that goal is Claude Bédard. I remember listening to TQS' Nordiques broadcasts along with play-by-play announcer André Côté. Bédard retired from journalism (also was a writer) in 1997, while Côté still does some Tv work. I was too young to appreciate the quality of Mr Bédard's French, his rich vocabulary displayed in the video is unfortunately unmatched by today's color commentators of Québec's French hockey broadcasts, TV or radio.
All that hooking on the last goal and Lemieux still stayed on his feet. ayoshi82, 'thank goodness they got that out of the game' that's part of hockey i'm not saying i liked getting hooked like that but it was something you had to fight off. If they hook you to the ground they get a penalty not just hooking on the guys arm, it's that sort of mentality that's going to get fighting taken out of the game.
gretzky was the most dominant player in hockey history but mario is a close second. its a shame he had so many health problems. he probably couldve beat some of gretzkys records. i wonder if there will ever be players like them two ever again.
the one around 1:08 had me laughing. that was good handling around those guys.

@Irato99
thought u meant all the games up to his 1st retirement. work on your english, saying "when he came back" would've been much clearer.
anyhow, you're still way wrong for making that dumb argument about gretzky hurting his average more by playing "old", since mario retired older.
the information selection game you're playing is completely ridiculous. you had to pick a specific amount of seasons to even try to have a point. you have zero objectivity or intellectual integrity.
joyfulvulture 2 years ago
@joyfulvulture
Sorry for being too clear for you limited intelligence.
Mario retired at 31, then played 170 games in the next 10 years (roughly 2 seasons).
Irato99 2 years ago
@Irato99
lol, you're french canadian, so you can fuck off with telling me how english works.
making good arguments obviously isnt your thing, so go back to eating chips and making your shitty little flash games like the dumb and sad nerd you are.
joyfulvulture 2 years ago
@joyfulvulture
All my arguments are good, sorry you're not brilliant enough to understand them.
And what the hell do my Flash games have anything to do with hockey?
Anything Mario did, Wayne did it better or faster, that's a fact, live with it.
Irato99 2 years ago
@Irato99
you're right, my IQ is three standard deviations above the average but i'm not smart enough to understand you're so-called arguments.
stop living in a fantasy world: you're an idiot that just got verbally and intellectually bitchslapped. grow up, accept it, and move on.
joyfulvulture 2 years ago
@joyfulvulture
Sorry to hear you're not smart enough. Considering all the hate you receive from everybody, it must be depressing being you.
Irato99 2 years ago
@Irato99
LOL, you obviously dont have a fucking clue what the standard deviation is on an IQ score to say that. good job showing how ignorant you are, again.
joyfulvulture 2 years ago
@joyfulvulture
I'm looking forward to take an IQ test with you and see who gets the highest score, that will be fun.
(Could we talk about hockey please?)
Irato99 2 years ago
@Irato99
lol, your dumb shitty little flash games dont even work properly. you're a complete failure. dont even bother trying to convince me you have a brain.
and i did gave you a rather precise estimation of my IQ, so why would you bother ask me to take a test? oh wait, i forgot, you were too stupid to pick up the hints, TWICE.
joyfulvulture 2 years ago
@joyfulvulture
My IQ is three standard deviations above the average too (148), that's why we should take a test.
(But shouldn't we talk about hockey, why Gretzky is better than Mario?)
Irato99 2 years ago
@Irato99
hahahah, google is a wonderful thing, isnt it?
joyfulvulture 2 years ago
@joyfulvulture
So predictable, it just shows how you're afraid to compare yourself to me.
And stop trying to play my flash games, they are intended to bright people.
By the way, Gretzky is better than Mario.

1:15. Mike Lange's "heeeeeeeeee shoooots and scooores"...with conviction and determination I must add! Whoa!
Habsfan0206 2 years ago
My goodness! Mario made the goalie like a complete fool! The man was THAT good! My goodness! I thought the Flower was something, and trust me, he was, but Mario was a notch higher or better than the Flower! I have to admit that, as a long time Habs fan!
Habsfan0206 2 years ago
If Mario was totally healthy he'd left Gretzky record in the dust easily.
mellowtribe 2 years ago 69
mellowtribe, I completely agree with you 100000%. Mario was a machine! Just imagine if he had a winger like Kurri. Sweet Jesus! Can you imagine all the records he would have broken!
If we can back in time and see Mario going one one one against Orr! WOW!!
Habsfan0206 2 years ago
@ Habsfan0206
Mario did have a winger named Jagr who has better stats than Kurri, Mario wouldn't have broken any more records.
Mario a machine?... With a machine like that I would not go too far from a garage...
Irato99 2 years ago
Irato, if Mario was healthy, look out. He would have broken some of Gretzky's record. Some of Mario's goals would never have been scored by Gretzky because of Mario's agility and size. His goal against Minnesota's Jon Casey in which he deaked the jock-strap out of Dave Chambers in 1991 is an example.
Habsfan0206 2 years ago
Anyone can deak an average defenceman, that doesn't make you the best.
Having 1000 pts ahead of the next one makes you the best, it shows talent and endurance which define true greatness.
And try not to say 'If this...' or 'If that...', give some facts.
Irato99 2 years ago
well, gretzky only played 500 more games than him...haha. Yeah you are definetly (might have spelled that wrong) right about it.

TheRealDerfMan 2 years ago 3
It's hilarious because Bourque was the best defenseman in the game at that time and Mario made him look like a beer league player.

Habsfan0206 2 years ago
Just made a little research... that would be John Steigerwald. And yes, he looks JUST like Ron Burgundy.

DUDE245269 2 years ago
As a Penguins fan, I am certainly blessed to have guys like Lemieux and Crosby play.
I hate the comparisons people make with Ovechkin and Crosby to 66 and 99. To me neither can compare to either of them.
Ovechkin reminds me of Brett Hull...cocky, killer shot, pure goal scorer.
Crosby is tough...he doesn't have the goal scoring touch of either Lemieux and Gretzky (he did score 92 in a season)..Sid reminds me of a Ron Francis, Gilbert Perrault type player.
LaVarLB11 2 years ago
No doubt about it, when healthy, Super Mario was the best hockey player ever...
UnionKane 2 years ago
There has never been anyone as talented as Mario that I have seen in my life. Seriously, Crosby and Ovechkin are great players, the best, but I'll be surprised if by the end of their careers we will be talking about them in the same breath as Mario

I'd say he makes Crosby look stupid.... but Ovechkin well... he's the closest thing I've ever seen to Mario's skill level.

I was too young to appreciate the quality of Mr Bédard's French, his rich vocabulary displayed in the video is unfortunately unmatched by today's color commentators of Québec's French hockey broadcasts, TV or radio.

kaner099 2 years ago
All that hooking on the last goal and Lemieux still stayed on his feet. ayoshi82, 'thank goodness they got that out of the game' that's part of hockey i'm not saying i liked getting hooked like that but it was something you had to fight off. If they hook you to the ground they get a penalty not just hooking on the guys arm, it's that sort of mentality that's going to get fighting taken out of the game.
CanadienKen1 2 years ago
