Starland Vocal Band basically became famous because their friend and owner of their label Windstar Records,John Denver, who was huge at the time, had them on his tv specials.Taffy Nivert & Bill Danoff, members of SVB,co-wrote Take Me Home,Country Roads with Denver, which was his first No. 1 hit.So he sort of returned the favour by having them on his tv shows.Ironically,Denver only ever won a Grammy-postumously-for his chidren's album.
This is proof of how much the Grammys will always Suck !!! For SVB to beat Boston , i cant believe it " Boston will always be remembered for generations to come " Who the Hell is SVB anyways ? I don't give a Fly " Long live Boston !!!!!
Starland Vocal Band as Best New Artist?????!!!!! the Grammy's have ALWAYS sucked!!......this is the proof!!! One of THE worst singles to ever become a hit. Sounds like a bad shampoo commercial. God Bless Brian, Carl, and Dennis!!!
Brian was such a wackjob at this point, the rest of the Boys were taking a huge risk everytime they allowed him out to a public function. It shows either their lack of judgment or desperation to get back into a position of commercial success. And this is from a big fan of the group.
I remember being in the back seat of my mom's car in '76 hearing Afternoon Delight for the first time. I really liked it. I also remember hearing More Than a Feeling for the first time and it BLEW MY MIND!!!!!
This is a superb piece of film. It makes me cry to see the Wilson brothers together. They never got much love from their Dad Murry. Carl and Dennis are gone now. Brian is still here. The music of the Beach Boys lives forever.
I don't know why the hell the Grammys are still even acknowledged- they should have lost ALL their credibility after Milli Vanilli. The nominees this year show they STILL haven't learned a thing- Justin Bieber???
The irony that the three most talented brothers to ever make music are giving a Grammy to Starland Vocal Band (????) says a heck of alot about that awards show
@infinera06 I knew Bill and Taffy Danoff at the time and they most certainly were 'real signers'. Not terribly successful outside the mid-Atlantic region, granted, but good enough to get John Denver to sign them. They also wrote "Country Roads".
@jfb1138 I read they sang at the WH before Clinton left office. The Danoff daughter must be in her mid 30's now.I wish I had known they sang downtown DC the spring of '76 as I was in college in DC then.I loved that song.Someone posted the Carolls later married/divorced and their son is a musician and Jon is in Mary Chapin Carpenter's band.
O M G !!!!!! Another 1 hit 1der over such great artist! BOSTON!?!!? C'MON...truely shoulda been them!!! Two of the artist i dont even remember!! AND I WAS 23 THEN!!
You have got to be kidding. The song was cute and hearing those girls singing about an afternoon delight brings a smile to my face but really. They beat BOSTON... that is really hard to believe. Someone needs to apologize.
God every new artist nominee was nothing that special in the long run (but especially the winner) though Boston fans would argue. Wild Cherry were decent at least.
Brian unknowningly does what all of us want. he stays right in the middle of the frame until the end, even though these people are accepting their award! :P
@SteverTudge Yeah, he did. But, He did it out of awkwardness. He is so very stage shy. And, yes, I thought he looked rather handsme on this occasion. Even at his age now he is still a handsome man.
@mattyork1 - I agree with you somewhat. It's not a stupid category, but you're right, they hardly ever, ever, ever get it. They did get it right in 1990 - Mariah Carey. But so many many years, they do miss it. And here, you're right, it should have went to Boston or Brothers Johnson. Hell I would have even gave them a pass on Wild Cherry, but Starland Vocal Band....give me a break.
Only narrow minded people who don't appreciate good songwriting would have the nerve to say that the Starland Vocal Band was untalented! They individually each have more talent musically on the tips of their fingers than say Carrie Underwood,Jessica Simpson,Lady GaGa,or any pop tarts in the Top 40 currently!
Starland Vocal Band, like Janis Ian,deserved a much better fate than to be labelled a one hit wonder. They were a very talented group of musicians, not to mention Bill & Taffy Danoff wrote Take Me Home,Country Roads, among others,& Jon Carroll's a keyboardist for Mary Chapin Carpenter.
P.S. Srsly...this HAD to have been the WORST year EVER for Best New Artists nominations!!! Only Boston went on to do anything..like I stated first message..they had to of been srsly high to vote like this and to have such little talent that year..geez - lol
retrotastic! really cool lasers and stuff. Cool to see the Wilson brothers together, of course Brian looked rather strung out, and Dennis did as well, which was not a surprise at this time.
I so agree with you regarding this award....This year, I swear..they had ot be so high to pick THIS band as band of the year..I mean srsly..only ONE hit off the album and it gets album of the year? Gve me a Brealk! - Jenni, 16, Chicago
