Most underrated new wave record of the 80s. Hands Thompson Twins - SIDEKICK with "Lies", "Love on Your Side", "Watching", "We Are Detective", "Kamakazi", "All Fall Out"
Faron, my best friend in 1983 looked just like the singer of the wonderful Thompson Twins. We bought our cloths at Merry-Go-Round and Chess King! Praise the 80's!
at the risk of sounding brash i was banging betties left & right to this song & many others like it in the lovefest we call the 80"s!!!!!!!! thank you to all you loose women who made it possible !!!!! you've made me legendary amongst my friends !!!!!!!! it was my pleasure servicing you !!!! sincerly ERM " the flying italian "
Wow! I never knew there was a video for this song! I believe I read Grace Jones is actually doing the chorus vocals on this song. This is pretty cool!
I had NO IDEA there was a video for this song! And of course, it's cheesy like most T. Twins videos. STILL, "Sidekicks" was one of the best albums I ever bought. I highly recommend it for everyone. An aside, (and I'm Black), I never knew Joe of the group was mixed-race. I just assumed he had two black parents.
Gosh, this brings back such great memories. The music today is really sad for the most part. Taylor Swift..a Grammy..give me a break! Carrie Underwood an ACM...please....and then theres Ms. Spears....enough said. I will stick with the 80's!
It is incredible how prophetic this song is. watching you, watching me! It's more a part of our culture than ever, and will continue on with little hand held candy tidbits.
actually to me,this song summed up the DISCO WORLD,"watching you, watching me,electrified they fight and fuss about,i'll SPEND ALL MY LIFETIME,WATCHING YOU WATCHING ME,LOOK LEFT,LOOK RIGHT
They used to play the extended version of Watching You (Watching Me) on KROQ in LA and me and a co-worker would do the whole Watching You Watching Me chorus Fun times. :).
@RainPoetry I'd offer you aren't digging very deep into contemporary music. Indeed, the trend in indie-rock and underground pop the past ten years has been "everything but the kitchen sink" songwriting and proclivities towards the unusual and avant-garde. Consider Joanna Newsom, Animal Collective, Akron/Family and Cocorosie for starters. I understand your statement is a reaction to present day Top 40 but still..turn off the MTV and corporate radio and go find the good stuff, It exists!
@dwshill Thank you for taking the time to formulate that response. You presumed that I have MTV on or even Top 40 radio, the former of which I pretty much turned off in the mid 90s and the latter in the mid 80s. :) As for today's trends in independent and underground, you are quite correct that there is almost universe of it available. If I can be so bold, I find much of it to be very derivative. That may be due to my age. :)
I heard this song for the first time two months ago when I hooked up the turntable for a friend of mine, a Hollywood exile. This was the first song he played. I love the "haunted" sound of it and how it captures the special, unmistakable sound of that time. A fun, weird, sad, reverberating album that stays with you.
saw them 4 times back in the 80's still love when he sang Sister of Mercy at the Hollywood bowl with the beautiful piano opening. Long Beach culture is a great song. There was a really great song on a 12 inch vinyl we have called Leopard Ray too. Wish they'd come back and do a concert sometimes always great.
Well QUICK STEP & SIDE KICKS is my favorite ablum, I adore every track on that album. INTO THE GAP is good, but I just find the music on Quick Step to be a bit more quirky and fun.
"Lies", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Watching", "Love On Your Side", "In The Name Of Love", and "If You Were Here" are some of my favorite songs. I haven't listened to anything post-INTO THE GAP because I prefer early 80s to late 80s.
The operatic voice in the song is actually Grace Jones. She was friends with the producer and was down in Nassau at Compass Point Studios when the Twins were recording.
Living in America, I never got to see this video much at all. I have it (on VHS somewhere...lol) THankas for posting it! I truly love The Thompson Twins - my favorite memory/band of the 80's!!!
I like to consider Thompson Twins to be a very artistic band. Nice musical structures, really paints a picture. Alot better than today's generic-sounding pop. This is very unique!
Oh I luv this song ...Thompson Twins revival! It's also featured on the fantastic double CD Love on your side - The best of The Thompson Twins I bought recently.(higly recommendable!)
Thompson Twins is not about the 80's it about the thompson Twins. Tom Bailey is God of Techo-new wave..no one can master the thompson twins machine and techo in Que arrangement...
An innovative gem from the 80's. The video borders on the homemade, but I guess that is part of its charm. A relic from a time when chart pop was not afraid to be a bit strange!
Both Quickstep & Sidekick and Into The Gap have been remastered and will be available on CD from early March with loads of 12" mixes and rare tracks! ;o)
(PS - Gotta love that bass sound - very signature sound for them)
The Thompson Twins were one of the most original musical groups of the 80s and 90s. The music factories of today which turn mediocre singers into cd selling pawns, wish they could even come close to such complex creative heights.
This is SOOO 1983. Great year for music.
