Its possible to be both proud to be born in the USA and of your blue collar roots, AND at the same time be against war and things like Vietnam. That's what this song is all about.
Patriotism is not blindly loving everything your country does or what your government tells you. Rather it is loving your country enough to want it to better itself, and requires speaking out when you perceive it going astray.

True, we the people of the USA tend to use America as our nationality, but that's because it's been repeatedly used in culture and even politics, so we just keep saying "America". America is in our name ( United States of America), and so it is used. Whenever I hear people talking about Americans or stupid Americans, they are usually talking about the USA, not Canada or any country in the Central or South Americas.

This is one of the most misinterpreted songs ever. Most people thought it was a patriotic song about American pride, when it actually cast a shameful eye on how America treated its Vietnam veterans. Springsteen considers it one of his best songs, but it bothers him that it is so widely misinterpreted. With the rollicking rhythm, enthusiastic chorus, and patriotic album cover, it is easy to think this has more to do with American pride than Vietnam shame.
