  • jerry with a strat how can you go wrong??

  • Oh, cocaine... lulz.

  • They were on 2 buses in Europe and there were the Bozos and the Bolos.... You can read all about it in the liner notes from Eurpoe '72

  • I have never seen that video, funny mask, hollween I sapose. I saw the dead in Okland on holloween they pulled out 'New Speed Way Boogie' AUSOME!

    Mojo, Sacramento, Ca.

  • @mojotheater50 To the best of my memory, it was shows in Europe where they'd come in with all this clown stuff and spook the locals so to speak. Also from Sac so it's nice to know other dead-heads there!

  • Bill looks like a real clownn hahaha.

  • proof howfun opens many doorways of quality

  • What a hoot! Thanks

  • @deathtosmurfs Great little book. You have a treasure. I clipped out an order form and bought the songbook. All the songs from Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. Last time I saw it was in my sisters guitar case long ago.

    peace

  • Yeah! Well I remember parts of it, like going there , getting there flashbacks of stuff. I'd do it again.

  • Very lively times.

  • 4:22 "Get this mask off me, I've got a solo to own."

  • i tried to put this in my favorites 2 times within 30 seconds

  • Now, I can understand from whom Slipknot copied the idea of wearing masks while making music!

  • When the Europe '72 tour album came out it included a nice picture book of some of tour highlights. Some funny pictures from this night. God ! I wish I still had that book. Saw the Dead, the Band and the Almon Bros. in '73 at Watkins Glen One of the all time greatest concerts ever. God I wish I could remember.

  • @liberatedsage that's awesome... i wasnt even born man, im only 22, but even if you cant remember it, at least you were there man

  • @liberatedsage I still have that and I wouldn't trade it for the world. But I bet you could find a copy on ebay or Amazon.

  • GOOD OL GRATEFUL BOZOS !

  • This was one of my favorite line-ups. Pig on the organ & Keith on the piano.

  • 9 people were having a bad trip when they saw the masks...

  • Damn! Jerry just making that Stratocaster SING! Love this sound!

  • Great that this is available on video. Is this available on DVD?

  • funny ~clowns always scared me before... what a trip that mist've been...

  • Comment removed

  • Keith had the magic chemistry with the band...

  • Pigpen sure could play, but if i had a choice i would prefer brent out of the keyboardists to play for the dead

  • you bet.

  • Outstanding Blues by The Dead. Cuz my Mama told me and my Papa told me too! Thanks HairFarmer.

  • Outstanding Blues by The Dead. Cuz my Mama told me and my Papa told me too! Thanks Hairfarmer.

  • That's not Rex. It's Sparky Razine. (~):}

  • Is that redx jackson at 2:22?

  • These lads took country, traditional and roots blues, folk and early rock and shot it through a kaleidoscopic cannon. 1972 was the apex. Pig was there, Jerry was in full voice, Phil's bass was thunder. Nothing in the history of music compares. A blues band, rock band, psychedelic band, folk. country and jam band all in one. To appreciate the Dead, revisit American roots music from the Delta and Piedmont, english ballads and primal sounds of rural and western America. this is their true legacy.

  • what a bunch of clowns

  • I wouldn't be here trying to sleep in this cold iron bed. '72 has got to be one of the best years in dead land, you can go and look at any of the setlists from europe and say looks average until you listen and find out how wrong you are ,50 minute other one>sing me back home or maybe a 60 minute dark star>morning dew it just does not get any better. Then you have these dorks talking about these dark star>terrapin>playin in the '90's all i could really do is just laugh, laugh, laugh.

  • @coyote023 not that it's any big deal, because most era's are great. but the band released an album called "downhill from here" for a reason. it is also the bands opinion, that hey reached their apex in the late 80's early 90's. hornsby is f'in great. the songs were great and the band as a whole were playing a lot better. '73 and '74 were great years as well.

  • @togaroc345 This humble listener would vote on on 1978 as their Apex, it was all downhill from there... Not that there were some great shows after that, but vocals, sound and energy were all there in the early/mid seventies...

  • Phil is TERRIFYING. Brilliant performance. Would have been great to be there. Have to second some of the other comments, the Pigpen years were their best.

  • This ain't a bad little jam

  • Ladies and Gentlemen, Bill Murray on drums... (2:49, almost seriously :)

  • phil is such a trip...looks right at the camera....watch his trick knee live sumtime :)

  • Phil actually look better!

  • hahaahaha they are having so much fun! awesome!

  • hypnocracy!

  • Hilarious. You don't suppose the guys were high, do you?

By the way, was Keith wearing a clown wig too? He wasn't shown in this clip.

  • bozos or bolos? and what of st. dilbert?

there is nothing like a grateful dead concert.

long live the old and future merry pranksters

    wherever you may be!

    never forget

    we ain't many

  • Iv allways loved the Dead!!!!! but they just riped the sh__ out ov the whole world good 4 the deed thats GEORDIE 4 DEAD god bless GERRY peice man >tazzartext< visit my channel u get fun in ya eyes

  • @tazzartext is that english?

  • I never liked em back in the day, they always sounded like they were continuously warming up

  • @blugularis your taste for music was in your mouth

  • my favourite dead period is the sixites early seventies.

  • @PAULisDEADMANnumber9 Late 70's is my fave. But we are allowed to have differing opinions. Jerry would have wanted it that way.

  • This is just a classic if there ever was one!

  • "72 they played Roosevelt Stadium. Jerry came out at 3AM just to jam. We could hear him across the water. It was GREAT!

  • 0:30 i didnt know Geraldo Rivera was in the Dead! Weird

  • Those acid suppositories seemed to have been working out well.

  • bill murray is the drummer for the greatful dead?

  • absolutely amazing!!!

  • lol :08

  • there are 2 starts

    1) Loser (Am)

    2) Deal (A)

    Then Big RR (A)

don't yell at people ...especially when u are wrong!!

    :) :) :)

  • so what its yesterday....its just as good today....maybe better tommorrow

  • testing

  • @mistaoneone Diddy.

  • Phil gettin' into here... GOD, what a powerful band!

  • A little bit of penis head can be inspirational. It's not like any of us went to those shows for the drugs, anyway.

  • BOZO BUS!!!!!!!!!

  • DAMN!

  • Who would have thought that slipknot whould take a page outa the dead's book?(opening shot with zee mask)

  • CHECK OUT JERRY ROCKS.

  • Classic year for classic Dead, documented brilliantly on Europe '72.

Great to see them in happier times, loose yet tight and enjoying their unique sense of humour....

Clowns have always stood as something wierd and trippy for me, stick them to The Dead and youve got a total sick mindbomb, [really wish Jerrys mask had stayed on]....Long Live Grateful Dead!!!

  • Too much fun.

  • that is kinda funny as shit there a couple minutes hahahha ballbusters hahaha

  • Loser tease..then rairlroad

  • @ioriorioriorio deal tease

  • @dershed GDTRFB tease

  • @ioriorioriorio Obvious deal tease.....NOT loser tease at all...know what you're talking about before you say stupid shit

  • @fordkrizek Hey genious! Theres a Loser tease AND a Deal tease.

  • What's going on here? Clowns, masks and a little L thats what!

  • all these masks really compliment everyone's personality here. jerry looks absolutely pscyho, like something out of "house of 1,000 corpses" and bobby looks like such a creepy perv, they were really having a good time

  • No, Bobby isn't trippin. Again.

  • lol @ jerry not being able to get the mask on over his fro

  • what the

  • happy 70th phill!!!!!

  • Can't imagine a band nowadays as loose as the Grateful Dead.

  • @stonerbudkap "loose" as in playing?

  • Good rocking licks by good ole GD! This was their blues era, after psychedelic era, before country era, way before disco era....It all had a thread of GREATNESS!! I agree though, if you never experienced them in person, you might not fully appreciate them. Their shows were something akin to a spiritual experience.

  • i like being high

  • @dominiccss Me too.

  • @dominiccss join the club

  • @4everledzep lol, I just got an email about your comment.. I don't even remember saying that hahaha

  • @dominiccss I'm sure they went to Christiania before the concert

  • 72 has to be my favorite year for the dead. the early 80s and 90s were good but you just can't beat pigpen

  • Check out '77. Really good vibes. Almost completely different from those eras. '72 and '77 are my personal favorites.

  • @avoraluke1990 72 and 77 were deffinatly the best years of the dead

  • @avoraluke1990 I'm a Brent fan, myself.

Thems be my favorite Maxell XLII boots.

  • Sorry bluesbaby... it takes more then a couple videos to come to understand what the dead were all about.

  • Videos can't do it, you really had to be there.

  • nobody said you have to luv the dead bluesbaby....but dont try and sum up 45yrs of accomplishment with a few videos...you (understandably) dont know anything about them or their side projects and influences.....

  • 0:54 "Loser" tease

    1:02 "Deal" tease

  • your either on the bus or off it! bozos rule!

  • Billy is the man.........."hey weir ya look better" good shit

  • lol....hahahahhaahaha easy there bill.

  • Classic!!!

  • Just in time for halloween!

  • Pig with the clown top!!!

  • haha phil's face at 3:15 fucking hilarious!!

  • This Was the Grateful Dead,,listen to any of the europe shows from 72, thats the Highwater mark. after that it was all downhill

  • Ummm...'74 and '77?

  • I agree with you Kell. I like the dead all the way through their career, 74 and 77 were great, but in terms of tightness and, in my opinion, overall quality of the music and shows they were at its height in the early 70's especially the europe tour.

Europe 72 is without a doubt my favorite, even more than live dead (which is a close second). I don't know of any other later live or studio albums that can surpass Europe.

  • That's just not true. The late 70's (ie 1977) was another great Era for the GD. They were jazzy and more experimental than Euro '72. In my opinion, there were great parts of every GD Era, except less towards the end.

  • Look how much fun they were having!

  • mama told me! damn you know she really did!

  • 3:14 phil is laughing sooo hard lol

  • How do any of you look at this video and complain about the music hahahah Well my momma told me...my poppa told me too

  • Mask on or off, not much difference, isn't it?

    LOL

Great stuff with Jerry sporting a mean Stratocaster (that's the guitar, not the mask!)

  • the gator guitar was a jazz bass body with a strat neck i believe, atleast that's what it looks like, check the pickguard

  • Song starts at 2:23

  • Boys having fun in Denmark.

  • We Want Phil !!!

  • great post!!!!!! ive only seen the picts....this great......not fade away

  • duuuude they're definitely trippin' acid

  • hahahha, goofy bastards

  • it sounds like theyre about to play loser at the beggining

    great video

  • Jerry teases both Loser and "Deal" before ripping into the Big RAILROAD Blues!

  • Ya the main riff in Deal uses almost all the same notes as the Big RR riff.

  • There's a lot of messing about for the first 2+ minutes of the video (one of those "you had to be there" moments) but once they get into this song, MAN I wish I had been there! Plus they didn't play this tune much. Great post

  • Just say no to drugs. lol

  • Drugs aren't the answer, it's the question, the answer is....yes haha

  • this is hot...don't tell me no lies!

  • People who say they hate the Dead say that because they just never took the time to listen....in any era. Truley great in all era's...just great in diferent ways. Jerrys voice was like wine .

  • people who say they hate the Dead are simply ignorant and just dont get it

  • I think that's the bottom line. You either get it or you don't. It's not something you can learn- you grasp it instantly or not at all.

We are fortunate to be able to feel the music like we do. I can't imagine my life without it & I feel sorry for those who don't have that in their life.

  • I remember in the 80's I told someone I was going to see a Dead Show and they asked if those hippies were still around.. obviously they had no taste.

  • This is before Jerry had his Tiger Guitar

  • Love the song, Love the band.... its all around greatness!! :)

  • this is where Slipknot got the idea to wear masks!

  • wait really??

  • probobly not, but it's an idea.

  • no they just ripped off mr bungle (slipknot that is)

  • how the members of slipknot weren't even born...besides thats not even music

  • i hope your not insisting i like slipknot cauz if so read my comment better but if your just trashing them then by all means there music is totally toilet worthy

  • sorry i didn't see the string of comments...but i was trashing slipknot

  • some look kinda similar lol

  • Funny! This version of the song ROCKS!

  • This is pretty funny

  • People who say they "hate" the Grateful Dead don't get to see prime years and performances. Best rock group ever!!!

  • Some of the guys I grew up with always were saying how much they disliked the Dead. But its funny, the 'brave' few who decided to check out a show with me have had a totally different opinion of their music ever since.

  • @emptynet1 If LSD were legal, Terrapin Station would be like the national anthem. Actually not my favorite Dead song, but you get the point. Now it's all about how gangsta or emo we can be. totally gay.

  • yeah man you could hear some deal riffs when they were fumblin with the masks

  • jerry really wants to do deal

  • Jerry is dropin licks on this one!! Tight!

  • AWESOME, you gotta love the masks

  • the drummers mask freaks me out

  • Is this at the Whisky A Go Go?

  • Comment removed

  • guess I should have read that huh? Thanks anyway. Peace.

  • u mean that place the doors played?

  • phil looks the best in this video

  • thats the grateful dead for you ladies and gentlemen, best band ever man

  • Mickey Hart was on a break for about a year back then.....

  • Big RR Blues rocks

  • bobby's looks believable

  • Where is Mickey? Jerry looks so sexy in that clown mask, seriously, such a cuddly bear he is!

  • SUPERB and fun!

  • CRAZY FOOLS _ YEAH!!

  • Haha "THese are for the cameras you must understand that" these guys will always be the best

  • this band ever tour australia?

  • wicked

  • love the guitar on this song, it just HAPPENS, like in gimme shelter. long live the dead
