@mojotheater50 To the best of my memory, it was shows in Europe where they'd come in with all this clown stuff and spook the locals so to speak. Also from Sac so it's nice to know other dead-heads there!
@deathtosmurfs Great little book. You have a treasure. I clipped out an order form and bought the songbook. All the songs from Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. Last time I saw it was in my sisters guitar case long ago.
When the Europe '72 tour album came out it included a nice picture book of some of tour highlights. Some funny pictures from this night. God ! I wish I still had that book. Saw the Dead, the Band and the Almon Bros. in '73 at Watkins Glen One of the all time greatest concerts ever. God I wish I could remember.
These lads took country, traditional and roots blues, folk and early rock and shot it through a kaleidoscopic cannon. 1972 was the apex. Pig was there, Jerry was in full voice, Phil's bass was thunder. Nothing in the history of music compares. A blues band, rock band, psychedelic band, folk. country and jam band all in one. To appreciate the Dead, revisit American roots music from the Delta and Piedmont, english ballads and primal sounds of rural and western America. this is their true legacy.
I wouldn't be here trying to sleep in this cold iron bed. '72 has got to be one of the best years in dead land, you can go and look at any of the setlists from europe and say looks average until you listen and find out how wrong you are ,50 minute other one>sing me back home or maybe a 60 minute dark star>morning dew it just does not get any better. Then you have these dorks talking about these dark star>terrapin>playin in the '90's all i could really do is just laugh, laugh, laugh.
@coyote023 not that it's any big deal, because most era's are great. but the band released an album called "downhill from here" for a reason. it is also the bands opinion, that hey reached their apex in the late 80's early 90's. hornsby is f'in great. the songs were great and the band as a whole were playing a lot better. '73 and '74 were great years as well.
@togaroc345 This humble listener would vote on on 1978 as their Apex, it was all downhill from there... Not that there were some great shows after that, but vocals, sound and energy were all there in the early/mid seventies...
Phil is TERRIFYING. Brilliant performance. Would have been great to be there. Have to second some of the other comments, the Pigpen years were their best.
Iv allways loved the Dead!!!!! but they just riped the sh__ out ov the whole world good 4 the deed thats GEORDIE 4 DEAD god bless GERRY peice man >tazzartext< visit my channel u get fun in ya eyes
Classic year for classic Dead, documented brilliantly on Europe '72.
Great to see them in happier times, loose yet tight and enjoying their unique sense of humour....
Clowns have always stood as something wierd and trippy for me, stick them to The Dead and youve got a total sick mindbomb, [really wish Jerrys mask had stayed on]....Long Live Grateful Dead!!!

all these masks really compliment everyone's personality here. jerry looks absolutely pscyho, like something out of "house of 1,000 corpses" and bobby looks like such a creepy perv, they were really having a good time
Good rocking licks by good ole GD! This was their blues era, after psychedelic era, before country era, way before disco era....It all had a thread of GREATNESS!! I agree though, if you never experienced them in person, you might not fully appreciate them. Their shows were something akin to a spiritual experience.
Wow, I guess it's love the Dead, or you're a loser. I checked out a couple videos to see what all the fuss was about. I've come to the conclusion that I MUST be a loser...Sorry just don't love the Dead.
nobody said you have to luv the dead bluesbaby....but dont try and sum up 45yrs of accomplishment with a few videos...you (understandably) dont know anything about them or their side projects and influences.....
I agree with you Kell. I like the dead all the way through their career, 74 and 77 were great, but in terms of tightness and, in my opinion, overall quality of the music and shows they were at its height in the early 70's especially the europe tour.
Europe 72 is without a doubt my favorite, even more than live dead (which is a close second). I don't know of any other later live or studio albums that can surpass Europe.
That's just not true. The late 70's (ie 1977) was another great Era for the GD. They were jazzy and more experimental than Euro '72. In my opinion, there were great parts of every GD Era, except less towards the end.
There's a lot of messing about for the first 2+ minutes of the video (one of those "you had to be there" moments) but once they get into this song, MAN I wish I had been there! Plus they didn't play this tune much. Great post
People who say they hate the Dead say that because they just never took the time to listen....in any era. Truley great in all era's...just great in diferent ways. Jerrys voice was like wine .
I think that's the bottom line. You either get it or you don't. It's not something you can learn- you grasp it instantly or not at all.
We are fortunate to be able to feel the music like we do. I can't imagine my life without it & I feel sorry for those who don't have that in their life.
i hope your not insisting i like slipknot cauz if so read my comment better but if your just trashing them then by all means there music is totally toilet worthy
Some of the guys I grew up with always were saying how much they disliked the Dead. But its funny, the 'brave' few who decided to check out a show with me have had a totally different opinion of their music ever since.
@emptynet1 If LSD were legal, Terrapin Station would be like the national anthem. Actually not my favorite Dead song, but you get the point. Now it's all about how gangsta or emo we can be. totally gay.
