  • It is called a cymbalom - which is defined as a "large Hungarian dulcimer". ORIGIN late 19th cent.: from Hungarian, from Italian cembalo, cimbalo, from Latin cymbalum (see cymbal ).

For those interested in the history of this instrument - which orginated in Persia (Iran) around 620 A.D., read "The Hammered Dulcimer": A History, by Paul Gifford. You can get it from Amazon

  • Looks like an oversized Dulcimer.

  • Spain is the best north african nation.

  • @billyshearsnot except Spain isn't technically in Africa. ;/

  • sorry dude, but this instrument was in anatolia before the ottomans or selchucs or what ever set a foot into these lands.

It was also known as "psaltirion" in byzantine times and also played by them.

  • no dude..dont mix it.. this is the bad version of Santoor...just visit iranian music ,search for it and you will see what the origin looks like.

  • i'm watched this guy :) he's so good.

  • I think it was definitely invented in Iran.

  • It was invented in Persia for about 5000 years ago. Look at my videos there you can se the original size and search for persian santour in google then you can se the real dulchimers. Search for Parviz Meshkatian or Kamkar in here ( YouTube ) then you find real players. // Nasser A Hamedi
