Wilhelm gustloff sank with ten thousand five hundred dead five thousand children on board all lost biggest maritime disaster in world makes the rest look small
The Costa Concordia accident eerily reminds me of the Andrea Doria tragedy, both grand ocean liners, both Italian, both hit on almost the same spot on the same side, only diff; Andrea was hit by the Stockholm while Costa hit the reef after a foolish mistake by her captain, how sad and weird!
@Edwynn12 ehm to tell all the truth the whole cruising industry in the world is owned and ruled by Americans !! Sure the nutsy coward captain of Concordia was Italian and he's the main responsible of all this mess , but there were many other misfunctions on board of the ship such as many others are reported in several ships of Carnival Cruises
even before cpt Schettino collided with reefs !!
And to end the behaviour of crew of Andrea Doria is still an example for any cruise sailor
@Edwynn12 Not really. Andrea Doria was an ocean liner, built for long distance transit. Costa Concordia was a cruise ship, meant to shutter passengers to different ports and destinations.
Also, the Doria was struck just forward of midships on the starboard side, Concordia was struck just aft of midships on the port side.
Its interesting, really... nowadays ships don't have that spirit their ancestors had back in the days. All those old liners; Stockholm, Titanic, Lusitania, etc. had their own personality. Now the ships feel like some factory work, like a Volvo or something (though, no disprespect towards Volvo; it's a good car...)
Its heartbreaking to see this beautiful, lovely ship going down--its like a person dying in a hospital. Ships have spirits, I think--and this one was a princess.
One of the results of this collision was the introduction of new rules for navigation using RADAR.The AD and the St both made small alterations to course, for to avoid one another which alterations, due to the limitations of the RADAR sets of the day, were not apparent on either ship. The new rules instructed us to make LARGE alterations which were immediately visible both on RADAR and by eye.

@Zebonka here in YT..it,s possible to find nuts, freaks, crazy morons...but one of the worst is you. You can call me stupid..and frankly I don,t care, BUT your life is PATETIC. Are u one of those "rebels without a cause".. drugging yourself and full of traumas?-well....FUCK YOU !!.
@Zebonka I saw your channel. HAHA. You have same patetic and stupid face like your comments. Are u playing in a "band" without success??- and mostly of the time in YT?- as I told u....YOU ARE PATETIC....HAHAHA. poor freak....
More people were saved from this than any other ocean liner disaster...The Stockholm went into a bedroom, killing the parents on the bunk bed, and backed out with the little girl on the top bunk, breaking her arm.....An Italian sailor on the Stockholm deck heard her calling out in Italian, and saved her....This was the day I was born, July 25, 1956
I heard a legend that the cameraman who filmed the original sinking was both seasick and airsick when he shot these. Anyone know if this legend is true or just a story?
sadly for the captain of the andrea doria, he was so destroyed by the wreck that he never went to sea again. and on his deathbed, while in a dying coma, he was screaming whether or not everyone had been saved before he died.
That's easy. Both Captains of the Titanic and Andrea Doria were smug idiots who broke protocol because they thought they were king of the sea! They both screwed up big time. Titanic goes full speed ahead on a quiet moonless night after repeated iceberg warnings. Andrea Doria doesn't spot the Stockholm on its radar, then sees it over a mile away and turns left, not right, against the rule of the sea that says both turn right to avoid a hit. Turning left made for a T-bone by boneheads!!!
@JoeyFudd@JoeyFudd It wasn't the captain's fault, do your damn research. The Stockholm's crew misinterpreted their radar, thinking the Doria was much farther than she was, 12 miles instead of 4 miles. The captain of the Doria turned to port, while the Stockholm turned starboard to pass port-to-port. There was thick fog, and neither ship used their radio. Before they could both act, the Stockholm smashed into the starboard side of the Doria, penetrating 40 feet into her. The rest is history.
@TwinPat90 YOU do some research, it was a sloppy, egotistic way to run a boat, and if you don't see that then that's your beef. No reason to tell someone else to do research just because they don't see things your way.
@Zuhaltermann And yet you give no reason to think that I'm wrong....vague, much? There's a lesson for you to think before you make a generalized statement about anything, never mind a disaster that killed 53 people.
@x3Dustyyx3 When you mean "clam [sic] on their breaks" I assume you mean the Stockholm was intending to slow down before the collision. Yes, they were, but it was too late. By the time they even knew they were on a collision course, the momentum was too great and she hit the Doria, going 40 feet into her. Now, Captain Calamai tried to turn the ship to port but that left her entire hull open, which sealed her fate. It was entirely preventable, but alas, aren't nearly all technological disasters?
@yachtabaco Elaborate, please. There was thick fog in the vicinity, which made matters much worse. That's why both ships were relying on their radar systems in the first place.
@sw201444 I have. The Stockholm never blew its fog horn, but the Andrea Doria did -- repeatedly. The Doria's crew noted that the fog was very thick, hence why the ship blew its fog horn. The Stockholm acknowledged no such event. Fog is quite common there in July, as well...
@sw201444 I really do hate repeating myself, but I stated twice already that the Andrea Doria used her fog horn *in the fog* before she was struck by the Stockholm. Don't know how to make it any clearer to you, I'm sorry.
@TwinPat90 DUDE I HAVEN'T FUCKING REPLIED SINCE THE FIRST TIME I COMMENTED.. EVEN AFTER YOU REPLIED. STOP FUCKING COMMENTING AND REFRESH YOUR DAMN HOMEPAGE.
@JoeyFudd asinine comment full of bizarre bs , try to get urself informed before posting such shit !!
Andrea Doria's commander acted upon protocol and did everything showing amazing skills, as stated by all naval experts !!
The truth is that Stockholm was helmed by a young unexperienced 3rd officer who made the ship go off course and kept on missing any successive manouevre causing the collision !!
Titanic's captain was a typically arrogant self-confident douchebag who made many mistakes
Andra Doria's captain had to see the most beautiful and luxury ship ever built sink despite he had been making all actions in the most proper way to avoid it !!
And of course with such an impact the ship sunk : it was the safest ship in the age , all 46 people died because of the impact as they were occupying the cabins directly hit by the Stockholm's prow !!
Just a question: Does anyone know what happened to John Tillman since that 40th anniversary WPIX special on which he reminisced about the Andrea Doria / Stockholm collision as seen here? (Mr. Tillman was an anchor at Ch. 11 from 1949 to 1967.) I know that for a time in the 1970's, he served as a P.R. director for the Port Authority of NY & NJ.
