I had a beautiful '73 Brougham with around 75K, 440 and duals. I drove it from the FAR north 'burbs of Chicago to Terre Haute, Indiana on about 3/4 tank of gas, raining all the way and the A/C running. I figure the car was getting about 22 - 23 MPG; not too bad for a land yacht. I loved that car; smooth, quiet and the 440 still had plenty of power. This was a pre-convertor engine. I still have the original AM/FM Stereo radio and it works perfectly.
@Thunderchicken1997 Tell me about it! The previous owner mutilated the dash and installed those atrocities. :/ I have sold the car now anyhow. Got a 73 Dart Sport now.
I have ridden in these cars. They were nice. I had a 1969 Chrysler Imperial Lebaron with the 440 ci engine. It accelerated as fast as this one. On the highway, it was rock steady at 110 M.P.H. It would go faster too. Chrysler is probably the most under appreciated car as far as handling is concerned. These cars rode well AND handled well too. The leaf springs were a little clunky compared to Caddy and Lincoln but, the handling made up for it.
These cars didnt have much power cause of all the emissions crap but they had enough and who the fuck cares about speed when you are riding in such luxury and they are still so fun to drive. Just peeling out is fun. I have a 78 tbird and a 70 plymouth custom suburban and i drive a 96 grand marquis as my econo car.
I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs and tank clean and rustfree
lol i know its going to be hard to park cuz that car is big but i think i would be good and i have a lot of chrome parts for the engine so the 440 is going to look good cnt wait
@JORDAUN23 Cool! That's ALOT of car for a young driver! If you master parking it, you will be able to park ANYTHING. XD Sounds like the trailer park boys car to me, if you haven't seen it, look it up, haha
@raydonato42276 well i would have but money got tight so he sold it but i will try to get it back and one day my sister pick me up from school and i was looking down and i heard a loud nosie and i looked up and there was my dream car a 70 chager its some were around here and i will be looking 4 it but got to keep the 60,s and 70,s alive
Brings back memories for me. I had a '77 Newport myself. My late uncle gave it to me as graduation gift in '82. I used to call it "the living room on wheels". Typical Chrysler ride, comfort, and power. It was loaded pretty well with the creature comforts. The analog clock always amazed me. Like many analog car clocks of yesteryears, they usually stopped working. Or gave you all kind of wacky time keeping. Mine was always right on the mark....Thanks for the ride down memory lane.
@adape0884frank This video was from 3 years ago, I am running nothing special for gas. Just 89 octane(with mandated 10% ethanol) from the pump, the lowest my local gas station offers. My 440 with low compression pistons and open chamber heads will let it run on even the worst quality gas without trouble.
@SilvaTone2203 And you know what, I agree! I liked the factory 3 spoke steering wheels that were offered for this car far more than the one that mine got on the assembly line! Oh well, beggars can't be choosers, I have far too many projects to worry about this right now, someday I might find a 3 spoke wheel that matches, sigh*
@SilvaTone2203 Ha, yea, that part is strange, and I am guessing it is not factory. Some previous owner must have put it on. I just can't wait for winter to end so I can drive it again:)
@mechanicwarrior20 Understood, but my car is the last year for no catalyst for Chrysler cars. My 76 Cordoba had one, the 75 New Yorker did not, but came with single exhaust, a leaned out Thermoquad, an economy minded cam grind, and a whopping 8.2:1 compression ratio. I don't like trying to guess hp numbers, but I believe that my New Yorker is putting around 190 hp to the ground, as it moves good for being 5,000 lbs of massive uni-body luxury car.
@666789443 15 mph highway, more or less depending on my foot. In the city it is not very good (it is a 5000 lb car with a 7.2 liter engine), but dang fun! I run 2300 rpm at 60 due to undersized BFG's (245/60/15) and American Racing wheels now. My New Yorker could really benefit from a lockup or overdrive transmission. I get stares, thumbs up, compliments, and funny looks from Prius drivers!
That appears to me more like 310HP or more. I don't care what's said about the torque that heavy machine would have left most firebirds/camaros in the dust starting from a rolling speed like that. Oh yea c'mon and destroy me for saying that-lol-
@MHASSANF Oh, it goes much faster, but no point, as the speedometer only reads to 100, and the car floats down the road so smooth, it is hard to get a feel of the road at breakneck speed. With the 2.76 rear gear, and 1:1 final drive of the 3 speed torqueflite, this beast should be able to reach 130 before the rpms get too high. I guess the only way to know for sure would be to have a gps, and I do not have one, or get pulled over and ask the cop how fast I was going i guess.. XD
@aboomanation i dove a 78 new yorker a few times and it had some serious power. it had a rebuilt 426 hemi in it with a nice intake and headers. 0-60 in this thing was crazy for such a giant mass of a car. it makes me want one even more
@mellonsed With the headers I have on my doba, after removing the old factory exhaust manifolds, the tie rod had to be removed, as well as the factory shift linkage. That is where I had to go for a floor shifter. Mine is an old cable floor shifter from B&M. The tie rod goes through the headers when it is all done. I wish I knew what brand my headers are, but I bought them used as a strapped for cash high school student. There may be a brand that does not interfere with the shift linkage.
@mellonsed My best friend owns a 1979 Cordoba, he also had to remove the column shift linkage to get his headers in. The ones he has are Hooker headers. He put in a new B&M cable floor shifter. The sound of headers on a small block mopar engine is nothing short of spectacular! 8) His channel is Thinkinman79 here on youtube. Check it out.
@mellonsed The New Yorker has an all stock bottom end other than a new timing set, with an Edelbrock Intake,Edelbrock 750cfm mechanical secondary carb, and Edelbrock valve covers and air cleaner assembly. The exhaust manifolds from the factory remain, just 2 inch glasspack dual exhaust setup installed by the previous owner. Also 8.5 mm plug wires, plain old copper spark plugs, and an orange ignition box.
Sweet! I miss driving a vehicle with a long hood out in front. I've been mostly a GM guy, but I sure would love to get a hold of one of these old boats too.
The only thing though. If I kicked it down like that I wouldn't be watching the speedometer. I'd be watching the gas gauge!
@JeffN727 I was always a GM guy, I got a cheap Chrysler Cordoba when I turned 16, and have changed my ways to mopar since. XD I do like all of the older cars though, from Studebaker to Pontiac and all in between. The prices of clean 70's Chryslers is still in a climbing stage, better buy one now while they are relatively cheap, before the mass majority get demo derbied. These C bodies are more rare every day. As far as gasoline use, literally, IT SUCKS!
