Being a Brit I followed the whole election process pretty closely, largely thanks to James Kotecki on PoliticoPlaybook (who has since ceased making vids). I've not been aware of much since the election apart from the snippets I read in the English media. Can you recommend a good US political digest channel here on YT so I can keep myself abreast of events? Alternatively, what's the best US newspaper to read online?

Handing out pardons is of course legal. It is the Presidents right granted by Article II Section 2 of the Constitution. You have to thank your founding fathers for that one...

Even worse, the supreme court apparently has interpreted this right to emcompass every kind of amnesty even in advance.

The only way to take the power of giving pardons away from the President is to impeach him. It would be an interesting case for the supreme court to decide whether this would also work retroactively.

I think the problem for Obama is that the economy will demand too much of his attention during the next couple of years and any serious attempts to punish the criminal actions of the previous administration will make it too risk politically for him. As for the question about immunity, I've always though pardons and immunity didn't make sense, but neither does locking up Rove for a long period of time. Sure people will feel good because "justice is served" but I don't see how it would really change anything.

The Immunity bs has always bothered me. It was given to allow the Prez to set things right, but it is usually used to help those that have helped in the administration's wrongs.
