Joni has always been the soundtrack to my life.....from when my hippie Mom filled our 70's kitchen with Court & Spark.....to the lovelorn girl I was in the 80's listening to Help Me...just one more time....to this 44 yr old listening to People's Parties at midnight deliciously alone in NYC while my gf is in Toronto.....wonder how Joni will come to me in 10 years.....Free Man in Paris perhaps? ; )
@SpeakTruthToPower20 You're a kindred spirit to me, as my relationship with Joni has been the same through my life. Eventually, I've ended up in Paris a few times. And yes, that song really hits home now. Yes, it's exactly where we should be at 50 :-)
I didn't say any particular album was her best work. I merely took issue with those who said C&S is her best. It IS a very good album, with a greater fraction of highly produced "hits" than on other albums. As such, it is more of a collaborative effort than, say, Song to a Seagull or Clouds. Who did all the arranging? One could argue forever which of her many excellent works is the best. In '68, I favored her first, while a neighbor was just as adamant about her second. I love 'em both.
C&S is NOT Joni's best work, just her most commercially successful. For the Roses was somewhat similar but much better, in my opinion, possibly representing the apex of her early work. Of course, if you haven't listened to Song to a Seagul a number of times, or Clouds, or Ladies of the Canyon, you barely know Joni Mitchell. On those records is some of the best music ever written.
@handyman1017 I don't think that's really fair. Joni is such a personal musician, and a poet. To say something is her 'best' work is like saying Sunflowers is Van Gogh's best painting. She's an artist, and as far as I'm concerned, everything she has written has touched somebody somewhere.
I have listened to all Joni's music. As it happens, she thinks more of her later albums than the early ones you've mentioned, so your arrogance is both misplaced and unappreciated.
Boy does this take me back. Used to listen to this album in the University of Sydney Fisher Library (Record Library) on a Friday afternoon when I was in my 1st year (1975) watching the sun set over the city, the light catching the windows of the offices and houses turning them all bright gold. Always made me very reflective.
Everybody's in it for their own gain, that's for sure. But there's no denying it, everything comes and goes. All's I know is I don't want NObody coming over to MY table, goddam Bloodless Brides of Jeezus! For crying out loud all we WANTED was just to come in from the COLD!!! :( Well at least I still got this parking lot outside my window.
When this album, "Court & Spark," came out, I wasn't sure I liked this "new" Joni.....That lasted for about 2 minutes. I look back now and realize that hers has been a long journey of genius. What I would give to be with her for the ride.
Yes, Court & Spark was beautiful, and Blue is immortal. Another brilliant, and her most underrated work was For the Roses. Does anyone have a version of Woman of Heart & Mind to post.
In the early 70's my girlfriend and I drove 5 hrs. in a blizzard to see Joni....the depth of her lyrics, understanding that words matter was and is beyond belief.
A superb example of Joni at her best, and Joni's best is an impossible act to follow in my opinion. A beautiful song best described in one word...perfect.
...ummm...ok...I hear this and i'm taken back to Fall, 1974...jr. yr of High School..in my room with headphones on and I've got my newly purchased LP "Court and Spark" on the turntable and reading the lyrics...soaking it all in...this song ends and the piano intro to "The Same Situation" comes sweetly in...i'm gone.
This song is based on some of the parties that David Geffen used to throw at his Laurel Canyon mansion in the early 70's...I love the ending on the album where the piano goes right into "The Same Situation"...absolutely breathtaking.
My girlfriend at that time asked me to buy Court and Spark for her birthday, I played it first to check for scratches and fell in love with it myself. she never got the album.
I love this: 'Laughing and crying, you know it's the same release.' Not just the words, but the joyous/desperate way she sings it . . . and the all the rest of song.
This song and the rest of the Court and Spark deserve so much more attention/views . . . no matter how long it's been since it came out. Too bad this version is cut off at the end.
This song defines me so well. Love it ... for so many reasons. But then, once we hear Joni's vocals, we don't really even need to find another reason, do we?
Awesome track! Thank you thank you for posting this... ohhhh if only to find the backing track.
Well, her music is just incredible and timeless because there has never been another musical artist quite like her. Yes, this lyrical work of art is beyond words.
Actually, COURT & SPARK is her 6th album. SONG TO A SEAGULL, CLOUDS, LADIES OF THE CANYON, BLUE, & FOR THE ROSES all proceeded it. Unless you meant second best album, then I'd still have to disagree. As, IMHO, it's her best. :)
Here are Joni's greatest ALBUMS, IMO: BLUE, HEJIRA, COURT & SPARK, DON JUAN'S RECKLESS DAUGHTER, & THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS. All of her albums have songs of great interest, but as concept albums the ones I listed are amazing.
Couldn't agree more on the list of albums. For me they represent her greatest period as an artist. I mean...shit, all those albums are amazing from start to finish. I still have original copies of all of those. Put me on a deserted island with the music of Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan and the Beatles, and I would be just fine. Probably would need Miles Davis too. LOL
This album was released in 1974, I think. I can remember a time when I couldn't listen to it without crying! I had just gone through a painful breakup, and this LP was symbolic of that relationship. I've always said, you gotta be in a good mood to listen to Joni Mitchell. Talk about reality...
This song very accurately sums up my teenage years during the 70's, funny, it still does in a way and that's probably true for a lot of us posting on this page. I still have my copy of this someplace under the baby clothes in the attic. When was it first released, 1976 (maybe earlier?). Thank You for posting this one, soooo nice. Cheers.

I only own this one album by Joni Mitchell. It was the most brilliant thing ever to come from her.
All her other albums, the covers of her originals are more popular than her versions. But this album is untouchable by anybody else.
After this she lost the delicate balance between being pop and being jazz.
If Mitchell were a great folk singer, she would have just stayed there, but she was too original for any genre.
