A worthy cause. I'm an upper tier Quake player but I can't feel half of my right hand. It's not completely crippling but I can't use the third mouse button or scroll wheel. Fortunately I can remap buttons to compensate in it. Plus I like using TFGH instead of WASD because of the wider button range. So button remapping helps everyone

As far as console games go, I would like to see button remapping possible for any action, in any game. Customising is good on any level, to any user. Be it in game or the console system itself.

As for computers you have a lot more versatility. Tools such as 'autohotkey' can be made to create macros or simply remap any key on the keyboard. USB controllers can be remapped as well.

@reallyhotdude08 Custom button mapping is basically non-existant on consoles. A PC game without custom button mapping is totally idiotic, but all console games have a few pre-sets. It's rather sad since I'm sure a lot of people(handicap or no) would like to customize their experience to fit their personal needs and preferences.

@qwer58j .... just had a look on my new wireless pad and there anti tamper screws not like my old wired 1 which are just plain cross heads... take the pad to a hardware shop they will have the right 1 for you..

I agree that this will benefit all gamers, I know that I have played games and gotten used to a button layout on one game example COD then go to an other game like battlefield and the buttons are mapped different. It would be nice to be able to configure the controls to that game to what you are used to because it will help increase you fun because it will decrease the learning curve.

It's not a lot, but there are still a few out there. I always wonder why not give players the option at least? For console gamers, there are adapters you can get that allow you to do this in any game. If you're on PC, you can always remap them yourself using third-party programs. This is, of course, is if those programs are not banned by punkbuster, like autohotkey in some games. Regardless, I support you!

Man I've been saying this for years! I have no handicap (other than lack of skill) but I've always appreciated the games that let you custom map the buttons. It always sucks when you get a game with a weird layout and end up throwing grenades instead of jumping or crouching instead of sprinting. I've heard a lot of buzz lately about the accessibility movement in the industry. Here's hoping it gains speed!

I'm totally behind your campaign for accessibility reasons, but I seriously doubt you'll convince the usability experts in game design companies to do this so as to benefit your average gamer. Focusing on a few, well-tested button layouts allows the designers to ensure that the mapping works well in the way the game is actually played. Letting gamers choose any combination would risk them choosing something unusable or impractical. Good luck with your campaign regardless, though!

I think it would be better if consoles introduced custom game settings... where you could remap the controls for every game you own, from the dashboard, and it would save your custom settings to your gamer profile/game save. It would create less hassle for every developer to introduce their own remapping system, patching it into previous games, etc...

You know you can do this already right?? The controller costs $49.99 and razor sells it for the 360. There's a button in the back that you can hold down and for example, you hit X and after hitting the X button you can hit any other button and it will be the new X button.

Yes, I hate games -- or *any* application -- that doesn't let you choose your button configs. AT THE VERY LEAST, any PC game which wasn't written by a half-wit will have a data-driven keyboard configuration, so even if you're schedule doesn't permit writing a UI for key configuration, there should be a text file I can edit on my own to get what I want.

Here's looking at you Chrome. I use "Duplicate Tab" 100 times a day (no hotkey), and I NEVER use "New Tab" (C-T) or "Bookmark All Tabs" (C-S-D).

While I understand where you are coming from, are you sure it wouldn't be a better idea to tackle the problem from a different angle? What about trying to get a custom controller being sold, one where the buttons are easily remappable. In that case, you then are allowing yourself instant gratification on all games, and taking the responsibility away from the developers while still keeping simple layouts for other users. Just a though, have you considered this?
