this car is not for offroad ;-). If you want offroader get Mercedes G class, Land Rover Defender, Toyota Land Cruiser, Pajero.. This is small suv for snow roads or light mud :-). You don't have mud tyres at least :).

The long and short of it is wrong car, x3 are soft roaders at best. For example light snow, country lane and gravel drives. Not thick mud like that my lR4 would have to work a bit at. 2 road tyres clue is in the title. They work on the road not thick mud (not that they would have made any difference here) to sum up find your local Land Rover dealer and do a trade in, you will get something that does what it says it can lol.

I'm sorry, but it's not just the tire's fault. The whole car is utter shit, the AWD system is simply not calibrated for off-road use. And it's not any more economical, good looking, comfortable, or practical than a 5 Series Estate. BMW failed on this car big time.

X3, X5 and X6 are AWD, NOT 4x4. AWD and 4X4 are not the same. And they don't have locking differential and low range gear, which are important for 4x4 SUV with offroading capabilities. So X3 ~ 6 are just like AWD sedan car with higher ground clearance.

if u accelerate THAT hard, u just dig urself deeper into the mud...stupid driver. i was in a similar situ in my fwd mazda 3 and i was fine. controlled acceleration and steering out of the mud is key.

I agree with brandao. If you "ever" needed to really go offroading, you would do the right thing and put on offroading tires on your SUV. Keep in mind today's SUVs are design for on-road use.

Trust me, my 3 series isn't meant for off road and camping! But I'm not quite sure about spending alot more for an X5. What do you guys think?

@PlaceboTree Get either an Audi Q5 or a Volvo XC60. Volvo is safer and has less electrical problems but the Audi is a bit more entertaining to drive. Both beat the X3 in comparisons and the X5 isn't as good as either of those.
