@turandot82 Or imagine a proper chorus singing "For unto us a child is born" in German :)) Fürs auf uns ist ein Kind Geboren... Would be so much fun to watch the "geboren" part on Trills :))
Surely Mozart was thinking on the prosody (the rythm and stress of the language sung) when he was composing the arias of Magic Flöte in German... Just imagine Handels Messiah in German... can you? I honestly can not. Every language has it is own musicality
i don´t agree, and i´m german as well as a life-long "Zauberflöte" lover. i think mr. fry did a great job, plus he erased some of the loopier parts of the dialogue schikaneder wrote.
Well, maybe the dialogues are better and stuff, but the sound of the music doesn't feel the same. I'm not saying the dialogues became poorer, but it's like playing Für Elise in a vibraphone. Sounds like playing with the wrong instrument.
Or maybe it's just because what remains to me when I watch the german Zauberflöte (as a brazilian-portuguese speaker) is just the *sound* of the language, not its meaning. ;)
i hear you. actually i feel the same when i hear an italian opera in the german translation, that doesn´t work very well, i feel. in this case i guess i´m lucky to appreciate both ways, but the sound of a language is important for the overall impression.
@FirstLifeFan I agree, the lines are really catchy too. However, I find that sacrificing the Masonic storyline for a Great War setting was what makes this film somewhat confusing and lacking in logic.
That being said, if it were to adhere to the Masonic storyline it would just be compared to Bergman's.
wierdest movie ever.

So much of this, especially the blue-screen flying around, reminds me of the video for David Hasselhoff's "Hooked on a Feeling".
