I was fortunate enough to see Scotty Moore play this, backed up by guitarist Johnny A, and Lee Rocker from Stray cats.. He's a bit more subtle (as you see here) than today's rock & rollers. I'm sure it wasnt' that way back in the day, but I'm just glad I got to see a rock & roll legend do this number.
Show some respect yourself..It's not about "Burning" anyone. There'd be no Clapton/Gatton if it weren't for the likes of Scotty Moore, Grady Martin, Hank Garland, Chet and Les.....at least Clapton knows it...do you?
Hey there Big Ron - you are spot on - the sound is as was on the original Elvis recording and Scotty pretty much played it that way on the clip. Yes, outside of this version, it is a really great song to "play the heck out of". This, is a good version though and as others have said, it was a tribute to Scotty.
Everybody wants to play the upbeat Sun Records tunes with Scotty Moore. Clapton does the best job, I think, but all these recordings, with McCartney, Knopfler and Eric only go to prove what we've long known or should have known - it was the genius of Scotty Moore's playing that made the vocalist whose name was, I forget, Presley or something.
@wielski Scotty couldn't shake his ass as good as Elvis or it might have been another story. I was glad to see Scotty was there for the 68 comeback special.
Great to see an originator. Recordings are like soup. The singer(s) are primary, the musicians blend in and the chef running the board picks the mix. Thanks for a great video!
@Mr11950 Right - I once saw him give Willie Nelson the guitar solo on some old blues tune, somewhere, on live TV, I think. Willie played. Clapton watched and played great rhythm.
Currently reading "Life" by Keith Richards. Scotty Moore was a tremendous influence on Mr. Richards. If you are a true fan of the guitar, you should read this book.
@Syzygy60 As of 12/10/10, he's still alive, and will be 79 years old on 12/27. A great talent. Sometimes I go back and listen to those old recordings just to hear that incredible tone of his. Brilliant.
I think it's a beautiful history the way clapton became a good vocalist... he took many decades improving his singing and finnaly, after a lifetime effort, he is a great singer... it's not easy to cover the beautiful tone of the early elvis recordings... Maybe I'm being a little silly here, because I'm a great fan of Scotty, Elvis and Clapton... but I don't care anyway,
@darren171066 it's a wonderful tribute.... Eric Clapton is not trying to be Elvis.. The fact that a top guitarist fm the more sophisticated phase of R&R and fm another country is jamming with one of Elvis's guys is what this is all about. Makes me very proud.
@bon1042 There are plenty of musicians that replicate others work that are equally as good but have not had the right exposure. It is far better to promote your own material, even if it is sub standard, than to cover soeone elses. Its claptout doing sad factor.
@darren171066 you totally miss the point here, it's a tribute to Elvis. Eric Clapton hardly needs to "cover" someone else for the sake of it. Scotty Moore is there with Clapton participating in a TRIBUTE to Elvis. HE'S NOT DOING IT TO COVER ELVIS AND TRY TO BE ELVIS OR BORROW FM ELVIS. Scotty Moore is one of Elvis TWO GUITARISTS WHO WERE WITH HIM FM THE BEGINNING IN MID 1950'S. Does one need to hit you over the head?????
It's wonderful to see Scotty again playing this classic number which must have influenced just about every guitarist of my generation. The sound quality is not too good here which may just go to show what an important part Sam Phillips played in getting the record to sound as good as it did - and yes - Scotty is knocking on a bit and has lost some of that magic touch and feel. But it's still a privilege to see him play.
I think it was neat that Clapton let Scotty take all the leads with his style of added 7ths. This was what was behind the Elvis songs, and it sounds correct. It was great of Clapton not to take a lead and burn Scotty.
Should you have no idea what the heck I'm talking about listen to Danny Gatton play this same song, and not hold back for anyone or anything. Of course this session was done out of respect for Scotty.
@Vermillion2176 Clapton could not play one rockabilly solo since this is strongly different than his usual pentatonic (blues) scale thing. Better for him he took no lead playing.
I don't understand your point here about Gatton. Who was Gatton smoking and where? He never played with Scotty as far as I'm aware. No-one would have attempted to "burn" Scotty on this song, and certainly not Eric Clapton, who is not a rockabilly player.
If you are referring to the Gatton Sun Medley on here then listen again - Danny quotes each of Scotty's solos out of respect before giving his own blistering accounts. He may not be your cup of tea, but get your facts right!!
@Vermillion2176 Actually, Scotty was staying true to the music. He could have easily cut loose himself, but I'm thinking he knew why he was onstage. But don't underestimate him as a picker...he could hold his own with Mr. Clapton.
@christopauls I totally agree....this wasn't a contest, it was paying homage to the pioneers who paved the way for artists like Eric Clapton. And, as usual, Eric Clapton handled it with grace and professionalism. And, in the process, he had a great time and put on a good show!
@Vermillion2176 Eric understands seniority a good blues man always demur's to his senior. I learned this from a blues man named Michael Bloomfield many years ago, It is part of the bules-man's unwritten code it is unquestionable fact. That is unless he gives it back then you have to take it regardless.
@Vermillion2176 i know exactly what you meen mate i meen come on scotty moore if no body lets him take front stage lead there extreamly disrespectful
@Vermillion2176 Good point... Clapton has always been musicly respectful & willing to give up the spotlight to who ever is comin on the stage. Just one of the things that makes him great... Plus lets never forget Scotty MORE than earned that respect :) Two GREAT players ... LOVE em both... THANKS to the powers that be for this post.
you know those fingers were killing him the next day, he probably soaked them an hour before in epsom salt and took a couple extra tylenol 3's lol! Old Scotty Moore one of the best guitarists ever!

Elvis alone is the most influential singer in popular music? Sorry, not so. By almost any standard, Johnny Cash and Frank Sinatra are right there with him - at least if we're talking the most influential singer in the second half of the 20th century. Then there's a considerable distance from them down to all the rest.
@Kat38 elvis went down the road bo diddly and chuck berry paved as bo diddly once siad "i opened up the door to rock & roll and got left holding it open'

@mttm661965 I agree with you - but don`t forget the blacks don`t like Rock n Roll music cos its whitemans music - they`ll stick with rap even if they don`t like it.
@tinpanalley67 Clapton went to the movies with Elvis and this was written by a white guy called Sam Phillips who did more for black music than anybody. R'NR is half country, rockabilly too, so go to the back of the class and keep your covert racist comments to yourself!!
@tinpanalley67 Wrong. Rock and Roll is a blend of Rhythm and Blues, Country and even Gospel. Nobody of any single color or ethnicity "invented" it. It evolved from disparate influences...
"The blacks"? Like Jimi Hendrix? Ike Turner? Bad Brains? Fishbone? Living Color? TV on the Radio? Lenny Kravitz? Howard Jones from Killswitch Engage? Lajon Witherspoon of Sevendust? Chuck Berry? Bo Diddley? Little Richard? Slash? Phil Lynott?
I don't think anyone has ever presented Clapton as an awesome vocalist. He himself doesn't consider himself much of a singer. Elvis, well, Elvis is dead so I imagine his singing sucks now. The point of this is him paying homage to those who paved the way for modern rock and roll, not for him - or anyone else - to be "better" than someone else.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The Beatles were a totally different set up than Elvis or any of the other "bands" of the time. The beatles played their own instruments, they wrote their own songs, and each album sounded different than the previous. They evolved with each one. I love the Elvis of the mid to late 50s. Just like I love Buddy Holly of that same period. The question should be, I wonder how successful Elvis would have been if Buddy Holly had not died in that plane crash......
Ah, get off it. Writing music is not the same as performing or interpreting music - like Elvis did like no-one else, and with a voice like no-one else
Markallanp in response to your comment about how successful the beatles would have been had Elvis not gone into the Army. Elvis's venture into the Army was well prepared for and did not diminish his popularity much at all. Most of his hit songs were recorded prior to going into the army and released while he was away. The same for his movies. They were strategically released to keep his voice and face in front of the public while he was away. It was a very successful campaign.
This came up as a suggested video for me and I am sooooooo glad I popped in to watch it. This was FABULOUS!!! I am a Clapton fan and also an Elvis fan - actually I loved the Beatles too. I know better than to say anyone is better than Elvis (he has some viciously firece fans LOL), so I will just say "well done Mr Clapton" and thank you for posting this gfgfm.
toatally different versions man. this is accoustic of course setzers is going to be more wild. but i like both. Setzers version is awesome thiough huh
Well tjmrom831, Beatles, "pot head musicians" ? whilst there were better musos out there, they certainly weren't that bad. Sounds like sour grapes mate. They became a lot better after they met George Martin, who was a genius. They were more successful and better than anyone in the US at the time until the beach Boys came along. As far as hypocrisy is concerned, look in your own backyard at Springsteen. He's always going on about the underpriviliged, but I bet he doesn't live in a shed either.
If this upsets you, think about this; for all there talk of being for the poor and destitute, I could help but laugh when George Harrison had that attack on his "home" that turned out to be a Mansion in the truest sence. But I guess it is ok for them to get filthy rich off of young, impressional AMERICANS while they gave their culture the finger!!!!! A very CAPITALIST thing to do. Hipocrasy! It is OK for politicians to have wealth and power as long as they throw crumbs to the poor.
the beatles are the most OVER RATED group of pot head musians in the history of modern music. They were just good at being differant at a time when that is what most of the "unwasher masses" longed to be. To be successful musicans in the 60's all you had to do was write songs about how the US sucked. The Beatles were a generic pop band until vietnam when they started getting all political. Why did they do this, kids would PAY MONEY for it. The beatles were about $. live with it
I often wonder how successful the Beatles would have been if Presley hadn't gone in the army, and if Eddie Cochran hadn't got that taxi to London airport, ending up killed on the A4. They were just about at the right time
Had they started out a couple of years sooner, would it have been a different story?
Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of the Beatles stuff, esp the early songs, but they were very lucky.!
I must stand up for Eric here. I don't think he's the best on the planet, but, his voice here is immaculate. It fits the song very well. Elvis purists would disagree but remember this is Clapton's rendition of a classic...and it's very good! Setzers version is cool too!
Great. Scotty is Scotty. His Sun stuff is unbelievable. I think he and Pelvis made rockabilly. White folks didn´t invent R&R. It was already there at least in the 40`s. But they made ROCKABILLY. Elvis, Scotty and Bill. I´d like to know how they took Travis pickin and slap bass to their thing?? Why?
i've seen Scotty Moore play live. He's an old guy in poor health, seems to get a bit confused when playing. Also, it isnt helpful to say any one player is 'better' than another... its Rockabilly..its SUPPOSED to sound raw and shite.. if u want perfection, go listen to poxy elevator muzak
like chet atkins used to say 'KEEP IT SIMPLE'.James Burton doesn't have the same feel as Scotty.Mind you I love them both. One can also say,All 3 of them (Elvis,Scotty, and Bill)were at the right place at the right time.?hey were also lucky that Sam Phillips owned Sun and made them spend a olt more time playing than another producer would.Time is money!!
Don't be so hard on Scotty Moore. Maybe he was limited technically, compared to James Burton or Chet Atkins, but he was still there with Elvis in Sam Phillip's studio doing his thing.
look, with all due respect to the fans, the issue is not with Scotty, but Clapton. He doesn't need to do this song. It's doesn't suit his style (vocally)...a bit.
yea ole scottymissed a beat so what?he's been playin this motherfucker before most of ya was born,ya was swimmin in a nut sack, when he done right ,,,age will catch all of yaz

Havhestur 2 years ago
Markallanp in response to your comment about how successful the beatles would have been had Elvis not gone into the Army. Elvis's venture into the Army was well prepared for and did not diminish his popularity much at all. Most of his hit songs were recorded prior to going into the army and released while he was away. The same for his movies. They were strategically released to keep his voice and face in front of the public while he was away. It was a very successful campaign.

I agree with that. I think that's why the 68 comeback, esp, the sit down shows, are held in such high regard.

Check out Brian Setzer's version he makes Eric Clapton look simple.

uh,the beach boys got blown away by the beatles and motown lost most of their white audience. Those are just the facts.

How long are hippis going to Kiss the Beatles Behind? What have they done that was worthy on worship??? Do not love man more than the truth. (Plato)

Hipocrasy! It is OK for politicians to have wealth and power as long as they throw crumbs to the poor.
tjmrom831 2 years ago
the beatles are the most OVER RATED group of pot head musians in the history of modern music. The beatles were about $. live with it
tjmrom831 2 years ago
I often wonder how successful the Beatles would have been if Presley hadn't gone in the army, and if Eddie Cochran hadn't got that taxi to London airport, ending up killed on the A4. They were just about at the right time
Had they started out a couple of years sooner, would it have been a different story?
Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of the Beatles stuff, esp the early songs, but they were very lucky.!
markallanp 2 years ago 3
They were very talented also.I am not defending them as i didnt like the way they changed their music in the late 60's.

Why?
SuperCrackerjacks 2 years ago
i've seen Scotty Moore play live. He's an old guy in poor health, seems to get a bit confused when playing. Also, it isnt helpful to say any one player is 'better' than another... its Rockabilly..its SUPPOSED to sound raw and shite.. if u want perfection, go listen to poxy elevator muzak

Scotty is a bad guitarplayer. Scotty was at the right place at the right time in 1954.
Hear the guy play...it is really nothing.
I'm a big big big Elvis-fan but ohoh what if James Burton was there in 1954.....
melkiemelkie 2 years ago
like chet atkins used to say 'KEEP IT SIMPLE'.James Burton doesn't have the same feel as Scotty.Mind you I love them both. One can also say,All 3 of them (Elvis,Scotty, and Bill)were at the right place at the right time.?hey were also lucky that Sam Phillips owned Sun and made them spend a olt more time playing than another producer would.Time is money!!
lakemaniac 2 years ago
Don't be so hard on Scotty Moore. Maybe he was limited technically, compared to James Burton or Chet Atkins, but he was still there with Elvis in Sam Phillip's studio doing his thing.

look, with all due respect to the fans, the issue is not with Scotty, but Clapton. He doesn't need to do this song. It's doesn't suit his style (vocally)...a bit.
